“28th Wedding Anniversary Getaway”
Reviewed 13 June 2011

We celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary by staying at the Blue Springs Cottage at Gorhams Bluff. We had a wonderful dinner and breakfast at the lodge while we were there, I would highly recommend having dinner or breakfast at the lodge if you stay in one of the cottages. We live in one of the tornado damaged areas and just needed to get away of all the damage, and this was the perfect choice to just get away from it all. The only thing I did not like was the price for the area. Dinner with all taxes was over $120.00

On our way back north from the Gulf coast, we booked at the Inn at Gorham's Bluff. It was not open on Tuesday, so we booked one night, Wednesday. Luckily, the directions on their web site are exquisite - every turn and road, accurate to the tenth of a mile - because not all of the roads around that remote corner of Alabama are well-marked. Upon checking in, we found that we (my wife and i) were the only guests for that night. Not to worry. The hostess gave us a complete rundown on where we could walk around the area that afternoon; the woman arranging flowers in the dining and reception area was an owner (or something like that - the inn and surrounding small community are all part of a planned village-of-the-arts envisioned years ago). And we had our own personal chef for the night, Keith, also an integral member of the community and inn. So despite a warm late March shower, we walked to look over the edge of the 100-foot bluff, then hiked the woodsy trail for awhile until the rain turned us back. We returned through the handful of energy-efficient houses in the little village. We then sat with Keith to help plan our meals, based on what was on the menu, and after an hour or so of quiet relaxation looking over the gorgeous Tennessee Valley from our room balcony, we made our way down to the dining room. While it wasn't quite a 4-star meal, the food was delicious and the ambience wonderful as we conversed about the valley, the area, the inn, ourselves, and much else with Keith as he waited on us hand and foot.

The room was deliciously comfortable, with a nice shower (we didn't use the hot tub) and most notably, silky Egyptian cotton sheets. Though there was a TV in the lobby which we could have watched with impunity (being the only guests), we never did, though we did sit in the lobby a bit. By this time, the serenity of the place had rather washed over us. Before we left the next morning, we were able to get in a longer hike, along the bluff trail in either direction from the inn.
Breakfast was whenever we wanted it – and featured the best grits ever. We then lounged around our room and the lobby for awhile. Checkout was as relaxed as the rest of the stay; we finally got going around noon or so. This place is a great getwaway.

My husband and I celebrated our one year anniversary at Gorham's Bluff. We had such a relaxing weekend! Our stay was very peaceful, the food was absolutely delicious, the view seemed like it was forever, and plenty of things to do to keep you occupied! I could go on and on about this place. We are an hour away from this place, but it felt like we were hours away. We enjoyed the hiking trails and the cycling! So much fun! We took tons of pictures during our stay and we'll cherish them always! We hope to come back some time this year and share this experience with some of our family and friends. Our room was very romantic and cozy...best sleep I have had in a really long time. We spent alot of money to stay there, but it was worth every penny...it's not every day you get live in luxury!

We received a two night's stay (including a dinner) at the Lodge at Gorhams Bluff as a Christmas present. We were finally able to get away in early March. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate for the weekend we chose - it was cold, rainy and foggy. We decided to go ahead and make the best of it and I am glad we did. We arrived on Friday afternoon and checked in the Satterfield Suite. It was lovely and we were quite pleased with our accommodations. We had our dinner scheduled for the evening and it was excellent. Wonderful, cozy atmosphere. Our late Saturday breakfast was good also. We could not enjoy the view or sit outside due to the cold and fog but we did explore the property a bit and then drove into Chattanooga (about 45 minute drive). We came back later in the afternoon and decided to pay for our own dinner on Saturday since the Logde is really out in the middle of nowhere and there was really no where else to eat. We had an excellent second dinner on Saturday. We were kept awake on Saturday night due to the high winds (much more so on the bluff) - in fact our French doors blew open during the night!

The only thing we were not happy about was at check out. Since we had received two nights accommodations plus dinner we just assumed we would be paying for our Saturday night dinner. Wrong! We were charged for dinner on Saturday (reasonable for a fine dining meal) but we are also charged the room tax of 18% and we were charged for breakfast each morning (which we assumed was included with the room). Our weekend ended up costing us about $175 over what had been previously paid on our gift certificate. We were not expecting to spend this much money for a weekend that was supposedly already paid for. I just wish they had been more upfront about the costs when we made the reservation so we could have been a bit more prepared.

However, overall the Lodge was lovey and the views we were able to enjoy were incredible. It was definitely relaxing (no TV in the rooms) and we splept wonderfully with the soft sheets and the gentle sound of rain on Friday night. I would recommend this to others for a romantic get-a-way, but just be prepared for some hidden charges at check out.

I found Gorhams Bluff right here off trip advisor, We stayed in the blue spring cottage on Veterns Day this year. We absoultely loved it. It was a nice scenic drive. The cottage was so charming and quaint. I felt like I was staying in a dollhouse. The bedroom on the 2nd floor had a screened in porch with a porch swing. There was a grill out back and any type of cookware you could ever need in the kitchen. A bathroom with shower upstairs and downstairs. Very comfortable beds. I loved the way the cottage was decorated. We had breakfast in the lodge the next morning ..it was amazing! The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. After breakfast we rode a tandom bike around the beautiful grounds, they have many bikes to choose from on the grounds you just pick one and go.....we found lots of beautiful trails and scenery. The only thing that was a little bothersome was taking a shower, the hot water kept going cold then hot then cold then hot. Normally this would bother me but everything else was so perfect it didnt bother me much. I would definately recomend this place and we will be back soon.

My new husband and I stayed at Gorham's Bluff for two nights after our wedding so I could get back to school for a test. The staff was so attentive, always asking if we needed anything or if they could do anything for us. The Chef, Keith, is amazing! He is not only a wonderful cook with an excellent understanding of true "locavore" eating, but he is also so friendly and attentive.
The view over the bluff, the bike rides through the nearby roads, and the picnic that was packed for us (which was a maple glazed duck breast on five grain bread, winter vegetable pasta salad and Ghiradelli triple chocolate brownie) only added to the wonderful feeling of relaxing and being able to be with one another.
We will definitely be going back... hopefully during the summer when the Alabama ballet stays there!
