We had a great stay, out 2 year old loved it. The actual Island itself was beautiful, a bit run down but the pool & ocean swimming were awesome.
The staff we found very lazy, each meal time you had to wait for the staff to come to you & flag someone down after 20 mins. This wasn't enjoyable for kids.
The attitude of most of the staff was "couldn't be bothered". This was tiring after 6 days. We missed our helicopter ride due to this matter by staff.
The accommodation however was excellent, we had a 2BR Family bure which was faultless except no Air Conditioner (there was 1 but it had no effect)! The bure was spacious & very quiet.
Kids club ok, but very hot inside.
Food- terrible, same slop day in & out. We couldn't face another buffet after 4 days.

Just returned from 1 week. Took husband, son, daughter-in-law and nearly 2 year old grand-daughter. Totally suited us as a family. Accommodation fine and great to have unit cleaned and supplied with fresh linen and towels every day. Diving was great - pools lovely - food very good. Staff excellent. Had excellent massage. Plenty to do. Will certainly return. Also had 1 night at the Weston which was great start to holiday. Very good value.

We stayed at Plantation Island from 20th Feb 2010 to 25th Feb 2010. We have 3 children aged 11, 10 & 2.
We also went with friends who have 4 children aged up to 14 yrs. We stayed at Raffles Gateway the first night in Fiji. This is a very pretty resort with a great pool & slide for the kids. The poolside rooms are better than the other rooms as we had the poolside room on the first night and a upstairs room on our return from plantation. The Malolo cat is a nice big boat and the 50minute ride to plantation was breathtaking, so the time went very quickly. The 2 year old just slept most of the way. On arrival at Plantation we were in awe at how beautiful the water & beach was. We were greeted at the jetty by staff singing the traditional welcome song & all received shell necklaces. We had reached paradise! We were explained how things worked and taken to our motel room. It was a bit of a walk but the room was huge & fabulous. More than enough room for the 5 of us & beautifully decorated with beachy colours, paintings and furniture. We had an air-con & 4 ceiling fans. All worked great. There is a room divider, for mums & dads who would like a little privacy.......Our 2yr old won't sleep in a cot so we pushed the 2 big single couches together and made a bed for her that way. She slept better there then she does at home! The room is made up daily with new towels and drinking water is available in a supplied jug. We only used this for boiling the kettle to make tea & coffee, and we did also boil extra water and refil some water bottles to keep in the fridge ( which we rarely used). We brought some softdrinks (cheap) and bottled water from anarkas supermarket and left them in the fridge also.It is not a big fridge but it was adequate for what we needed. Take a few pegs as there is a line outside your room to hang wet swimmers & towels etc. We had the all u can eat meal plan. We found that was enough but next time we would skip the breakfast & just buy cereal & milk from the supermarket as we felt we had to hurry in the morning to get to breakfast in time.(Remember there's a time difference, so really you are waking up very early). Theres enough on the lunch menu to choose a different one everyday and dinner is always different. The atmospere at meal times is terrific with the singing & beach flames burning & even with a 2 yr old I was able to relax. She loved the freedom of the place also. It is so safe, the staff are beautiful & friendly. Both my daughters had some braids put in their hair. Well worth the money as they didn't have to worry about knotty hair all week, plus it looked great. I didn't want to take them out for awhile after we got home! There is a few pools. We spent most of our time in the one with the baby pool attached near the bar! That catered for everyone. There is also pool tables there for the older kids. The kids club we only used mainly at night after they had eaten. There is a seperate meal time for the children & they eat first then go off to kids club, which is great for the adults to sit & relax together. The kids done crab racing, limbo in the sunset, paddle boat races, t-shirt painting, movies, talent quest & more. You have to sign your kids in & out for safety reasons, & pick them up at 9pm. It caters for ages 4 and up but as we had so many in our group the 2yr old was watched by the older ones. There is fijian babysitters who charge $3 hr.Well worth the time alone & they really love kids there. There is also a playground for the little ones.We went handline fishing for free, snorkelling (free), golf tounament where my husband won a sulu, karoke for adults & a 'mr plantation' competition for the men & dads. A lot of fun. I also had a 30mins massage - well worth the money! We walked up to the gallery which has a lot of homemade trinkets and souveniers. The view is stunning & we also had a look at one of the other resorts on the island. We a;lso went on the shell villiage tour where the local villiages make handmade jewellery & things. This is also worth a look. It was a very quiet time for the resorts which was great for us. No waiting for anything! There was also no problems with mosquitos either, which we were expecting but so glad about.
The only things we would do differently next time will be the no breakfast deal & get a room closer to the front of the resort. Maybe a beach front one! Oh & stay at least 2 weeks!
I would HIGHLY recommend this resort if you want a fun, relaxed holiday with kids. I was so relaxed I thought it was Tuesday for 3 days!!! Its very hard to leave & we will return one day!

PIR-management, Director of Sales at Plantation Island Resort, responded to this reviewResponded 3 July 2010

We are sorry that your Plantation Island Resort experience did not meet your expectations. We have had feedback from other guests regarding our meal packages and have recently revamped the whole meal package system.

We do operate a separate children's buffet from 5-6:30pm. The reason for this is that most parents prefer their children to eat earlier, so that their kids can enjoy the evening kids club activities while they have a relaxing dinner and enjoy some "adult time". For parents who wish to dine with their children, they can either eat earlier themselves (adult dinner service begins at 6pm) or their children can eat from the regular ala carte menu or adults buffet at a discounted rate.

As of 1 July, Plantation is offering a Full American Buffet breakfast. This was in response to guest feedback requesting that we include hot breakfast items in our buffet breakfast (e.g. eggs, bacon, pancakes etc).

I'm sorry that you were inconvenienced by the maintenance work that was carried out on the restaurant roof at the beginning of the year. We tried to complete the majority of the roofing work outside of restaurant dining hours, however as this project had to be completed quite quickly there was a day or two where this was not possible. We apoogise if the noise from this project negatively affected your overall holiday experience.

During your stay at Plantation, we had the unfortunate occasion of having two of our main speedboats break down at the same time. This affected some of the watersports activities that we were able to offer. We apologise if this impacted upon your holiday with us at Plantation.

It has been some years since we stayed at Plantation Island and we were expecting to see more improvements. Greatest plus is the Island has excellent beach swimming even at low tide.
The Resort is spacious but rather tired in appearance. Some bures are being tarted up with wall panel but are still rather dated with old dark bedrooms & bathrooms. Bures lac many of the normal inclusions.Hair dryers, irons or brooms/mops etc are not available.
Fijian staff are not as friendly as other Islands and often tend to ignore guests. Restaurant & Bar are 1960s appearance. Prices expensive so go for the prepurchase meal package.
In all there is a very impersonal feeling of being on Platation Island Resort and we would not return when there are so many better Resorts in Fiji.

Just returned from Plantation Island Resort last weekend, staying for 7 nights in a Studio Garden Bure (306) with 2 adults and 2 kids aged 11 & 17years.

Accommodation:
• Clean and spacious
• Fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, 2 x single beds, 1 x king bed, small couch, air con, ceiling fans, chest of drawers, wardrobe, in-room safe, shower, toilet, basin, small veranda.
• Comments: One large open plan space – privacy may be an issue. Difficult to cool with air con, but ceiling fans did a good job. Serviced daily, including changing bed sheets and towels daily. Not modern, but clean and well maintained.
Food:
• We pre-purchased the Meal Deal which included breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
• Kids under 12 eat free – This entitles kids to continental breakfast (cereal, toast and condiments, juice, tea/coffee, fresh fruits, cakes/hot danishes), buffet lunch (varies daily), and Kids Buffet or Kids Al a Carte which is held between 5pm-6.30pm. If you want your kids to eat with you, or you have older kids this can be difficult to manage.
• There are different meal plans that entitle you to different things and this wasn’t explained at the time we purchased the meal deal. We ended up with continental breakfast daily and hot breakfast 2 days which entitled us to order an item off the al a carte breakfast menu (eg: eggs and bacon) in addition to the continental. Our lunch deal entitled us to buffet or something of the lunch specials (eg: chicken schnitzel or burger). Dinner voucher entitled us to buffet or choice of 2 chefs specials.
• Quality of food was good – not 5*, but still very enjoyable. Some things were excellent, whereas others were just OK. Nothing inedible.
• You could really manage without lunch, so if you have a choice, breakfast and dinner is probably suffice.
• The small supermarket near the airstrip had lunch making essentials if you want to self cater and the snack bar had reasonably cheap toasties, chips, pies etc.
Drinks:
• I took over a 2L cask wine as that is my preferred drink. I just declared it at customs.
• Took over 3L of water in our luggage – the drinking water provided was fine, or it was cheap to buy on the island.
• We bought some soft drinks at the supermarket for afternoon drinks.
• From the bar it worked out much better to buy a bottle of wine and take what I didn’t drink at dinner back to the Bure for the next day.
• Soft drinks were a little expensive at the bar, but mocktails were OK value - $6FJD and the kids really enjoyed these.
• Cocktails I found disappointing – small, watery and $18FJD or $15.50FJD happy hour.
• Cheap bar at Muscat Cove - $4 soft drinks and wine, $15 cocktails which were amazing – take cash.
Activities:
• Free snorkelling and fishing were great.
• Brigham Island snorkelling I thought was amazing! $11FJD pp
• Shell village trip was a little disappointing – just turned up at the village and bought things form the locals. It would have been much better if there was a cultural guide or cultural aspect to it. $11FJD pp.
• Kayaks – older style are free, but glass bottom were $10FJD per hour.
• Basket weaving class was comical (sorry for my total local of coordination Richard)!
• Kids club – my 11yo didn’t go, but it seemed like fun!
• RELAXING – top notch!!
Service/Atmosphere:
• Embrace Fiji time. It’s a good lesson to slow things down and just enjoy the surroundings. Being patient, rather than demanding and rude goes a long way.
• Dinner on the sand, while the sun sets, listening to the Plantation Island String Band and various other staff members singing was such a joy!
Overall:
• An experience of total relaxation, with good facilities, beautiful staff in a wonderful natural environment.

Words can not describe..My family and friends didn't want to go home...the place and location is fantastic for families...i absolutely recommend Plantation Island..lots to do and see...snorkelling was great, the 5 island cruise was fantastic, game fishing was great even though we never caught anything but i did get to see the dolphins swimming along the boat..If you wanna get away for a couple of hours i recommend Lomani adults only resort...very peacful...or the Musket Cove Resort for a swim and meals ...service is alot better there but i guess it's because they weren't as busy as Plantation...Both resorts are a short walk from Plantation...Never heard the kids say the word"I'm Bored"...

We travelled with 2 families, 6 kids in total from the age of 6 - 13 years and we hardly saw them except for breakfast, lunch and dinner...

Will definately go back!!
