“Fantastic for Snorkelling with Kids”
Reviewed 2 August 2013

We deliberately asked the travel agent for an island we could get the kids snorkelling off a beach. having a 9, 7 and 5 year old Mana Island turned out to deliver a great exposure to a reef and all the wonderful marine life. We were in a 500 bure - large room with 2 double beds and a single. No privacy for parents ;). we were 10 metres from north beach and it was fantastic. teh snorkelling was amazing here - all our kids managed to get out to the drop off - about 50 meteres out, and teh tides were in our favour, teh sea life was great. South beach is beautiful too, the pontoon was greta to swim to and explore from. Both beaches are pictureseque, and the sunsets great,

had a babysitter one nigt, didnt do teh jids club - too much swimming to be done. would probably get a babysitter more for evenings and dine at teh south beach restaurant. all lunchs we ordered pizza to teh bure, and this was very good.

We got tired of buffet! it was an ok standard, but with kids being fussy found the multiple options stressful. I would eat more at teh sth beach with kids for dinner too.

Staff friendly but we kept feeling like we were missing something, but we just swam and swam and ate. North beach great for sand castles too.

the resort pool is not huge, but whilst the resort had 90% occupancy it felt like we had lots of space, at times we had the beach and snorlkelling to less than 15 people - and its a big beach. pool always busy.

i would return, great for snorkelling.

Room Tip: north beach bures were a walk - 5 min to food but so near the beach - very relaxing. perhaps a south...

We stayed for a week recently and loved it. It's not 5 star but perfect for families. Yes there is a bit of maintainable required in some places but nothing that prevented us from enjoying our stay. We stayed in an Ocean Front Suite and it was perfect for a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids). Staff are so lovely and friendly, we'd definitely go back.

We have just returned 1/8/13 form a fantastic sun filled week on Mana. We went to Plantation last year and didn't agree with most of the poor reviews it received so we were expecting a similarly good experience at Mana despite some of the negative comments. From the welcome singing at arrival and orderly compreshensive check in and familiarisation on arrival, the tone was set. The staff were smiling an dfriendly and always willing to help. We were in the Ocean view Bures in teh 401-411 block. Nice and spacious and clean with modern bathrooms and nice airyliving space. We were with our 3 and 7 year old sons who slept in the sofa bed and single bed in the same room. The deck looked out over a lawned and palmed area all of 10 metres to the beach and stunning blue pacific ocean. Steps from the deck directly onto the lawn would have made some sense but then sometimes in the islands our logic doesn't add up :) My wife and I spent peaceful adult time on the North beach while the boys did morning kids club. The beaches are very tidal and you cannot swim at north beach on the low tide but it is fabulous on teh mid to high tide. This means that this beach is far quieter than the South Beach and great for some R&R. The South Beach was fantastic on all tides but a little lacking in loungers Epi and his proactive beachside bar service was great!!. More to watch and more to do on this side of the island and if our budget allows next year we would book the South Beach apartments for convenience. Kids club was great and varied for the boys and they did most morning and evening sessions. All the Staff were excellent particularly Big Mama, Big Bear and Cinderella. Food:- I like my food and I can be quite picky and critical but I cannot fathom some of the previous whingeing on here. Breakfast catered for everyone with a range of cereals, fruits, juices, breads, pastries, pancakes, bacon, sausages, hash browns, beans, hard bolied eggs, soft bolied eggs, fried eggs, omelettes, and even poached eggs. We didn;t try teh lunch buffet and either ate at the South Beach restaurant or the poolside snack bar which were bot good. Kids corner had plenty of variety of "kids" style food where you could fill them with the things they like like pasta , pizza, fish or nuggets and supplement it with fresh veges and salads and fruit for pudding which is the stuff we would rather they ate. The evening themed buffets were fine if a little pricey and gave a good variety again. The South Beach restaurant had a good ala carte menu and alwasy served beautiful fresh fish as the catch of the day. Mana is an island in the middle of the South Pacific, they do not graze cattle or sheep but they are surrounded by ocean so make the sensible chioce and order what is freshly availabel and you can;t be disappointed. Mahi Mahi, Spanish Mackerel, Trevalley were a few on offer while we were there and all well cooked and presented. You'll get a better steak in Brisbane and better Lamb in Christchurch so stick with what they produce and you'll be right! Overall it was a fantastic holiday and we will definitely go back. They could do with a better kids pool but with the soft sand and amazing snorkelling on both beaches who needs the chlorine. Our only disappointment of the week was the Crusaders loss to the Chiefs. Vinaka vakalevu to Mana!!!

The minute you land on Mana Island you hit Island time!! We had a fantastic Deluxe Ocean front suite - just perfect for our family of 4. Spacious 2 storey suite with 2 excellent sized bathrooms, balconies on both levels with lovely views across Sth Beach. Sofas in living area were comfortable if you want to spend time relaxing inside. Fans & air conditioning kept the room beautifully cool. Beds very comfortable however the beds are small for 2 (only a double size) would be great if they had kingsize beds - especially in the heat. A bar fridge with tea and coffee making facilities in room.
Rooms were serviced with fresh flowers, bath & beach towels daily.
The staff across the resort were great. Traditional Fijian friendliness and were fantastic with the kids - getting them involved in rugby games, table tennis and anything else that happened to be going on. We didnt use the Kids Club but the younger kids seemed to be really enjoying it.
The layout of the resort was lovely so even at peak times you dont feel like its busy - other than at meal times. The buffet was fine to feed the family but well worth taking a break from the busy buffet for a few dinners & or lunches at South Beach Restaurant.
Snorkelling was great on all beaches - with a great array of tropical fish & coral and good drop offs on all reefs. The pontoon on Sth Beach was great entertainment for the kids.
Not worth doing the Sea Fiji snorkelling trip - apart from a much deeper drop off from the reef we felt the snorkelling off Nth Beach was better.
The resort offers the perfect relaxed family holiday. Areas of the resort are a little tired - but it really didnt matter as travelling with children doesnt need to be glamorous!! The resort was comfortable and clean with friendly staff and great beaches and enough activities to entertain everyone - you dont need much more than that.
We didnt use the pools as the beaches were perfect for swimming and snorkelling daily. The pools were small and I suspect perfect for families with younger children.
A fantastic holiday all round for our family - definitely one to repeat! Thanks Mana

Room Tip: Its well worth getting a larger room - especially in the heat. For a family of 4 I would book eithe...

We recently had a family holiday on Mana and enjoyed our time there. We were very lucky to receive an upgrade from an Island Bure to an Ocean View Bure. This was a great start! With a family of four (kids 15 and 10) bunking in together it was going to be fraught, but we all managed really well, with the kids taking themselves down to the main lounge some evenings for the entertainment, giving us time to chill out in the room/deck.
The bure had a wonderful shower, plenty of bedding, was clean and tidy and the cleaners always did a great job. The fridge was small, but we squeezed in our stuff by moving the minibar out. It would have been handy to have small plates but we managed without.
There were plenty of water activities available (non-motorised free) and the kids loved the motorised sports. A number of them were restricted to the tide i.e. jet ski - so that's something to bear in mind. We all went on the snorkelling boat trip and were slightly disappointed. There didn't seem to be any more fish than what you could see off the beach. It may be worth saving your $ to do something else.
The 2 pools were great. The infinity pool is adult only, however our 10 year old was able to swim in there with us (quietly) and no one had a problem. We ended up using the pool at low tide as the reef prevented swimming during that time. At times the pool side loungers were 'taken' by people leaving their towels on the loungers and being away from the area for hours. This was a bit disappointing when there is limited space, but we never had to wait too long to find one.
We went to the buffet for breakfast and filled up to get through til later in the day. There was plenty of food and options. We dined at South Beach restaurant a couple of times and the food was great. Pizzas were a big hit with the kids. We had croissants and wraps for lunch for Volivoli cafe, and took advantage of NZ natural and the pool side bar for treats!
The staff were immensely friendly, always smiling and greeting you. There were plenty of staff around and there was always guitar/ukulele entertainment. There were activities throughout the days, though not always exactly what was on the list in the room, the only difficulty we had was doing what we wanted from these activities and trying to relax as there always seemed to be a need to be somewhere at a particular time to give the kids the opportunity to experience it all!
Whilst there were a lot of people around, we managed to have time and space to ourselves. At times the staff were overly helpful, but once again you could find a quiet space to get away from that. Overall, the resort was great. Next time though we'd probably try a different island - nothing against Mana, there's just so many more islands to explore!

Fantastic holiday and lovely island. We stayed in an island bure which was better than expected and sheltered. Only complaint would be the lack of staff for the kids club. At times there would be anywhere up to 60 children with only two staff which worked fine for the older and more outgoing kids but of concern for the younger and shy ones. A lot of waiting to make sure they were ok to feel confident enough to leave them! But overall our 2 kids enjoyed it enough to want to go back each day. Worth questioning when you are there as staff numbers probably fluctuate. Snorkelling is brilliant! My hubby went for a few dives and said the snorkelling close to shore was just as good if not better than the dives he did. Also worth buying a case of beer and some wine in Nadi beforehand as much cheaper and Mana Island allows it to be brought in.

Just spent 5 great nights on Mana Island and loved it. Doesn't pretend to be a super luxury 5 star resort, and we weren't expecting it to be. Some parts looked a bit tired and there's obviously still work being done to clean up after storms earlier in the year. We stumped up for a Deluxe Ocean View Bure and it was definitely the right move. Bure was clean, good condition, had all the amenities a fair minded family would need - lots of space and light - and a reasonable amount of privacy. Bure was right on the North beach, which despite it being school holidays, remained virtually free of people.

Restaurants are pretty much what you'd expect for a mainly family resort - It's not high class cuisine and pretty basic but we certainly didn't go hungry! We took in enough food to not have to do the buffet for every meal and I think that helps. Also taking in a hefty amount of duty free meant our bar bills were not exorbitant (make sure you take in lots of mixers too!)

Beaches were fantastic, tons of activities, staff were very friendly and helpful. Although we didn't use it, the Kids Club seemed full of laughing, happy, busy kids. I imagine this would be a godsend for families with younger children. Didn't use the pool (which was small and basic) but with the beaches on offer we didn't even consider using the pool.

We'd go again with no qualms.
