“Mana Island is great with a young family”
Reviewed 8 October 2010

The staff loved our 16 month old and were always accommodating. Like when we left our pram on the ferry over there, they located it and we had it by the end of the day. the snorkeling was great. food at south beach restaurant excellent for dinner, so def book the day before for this, as it's worth it. we stayed in ocean front suite, the one with the mezzanine level, which is perfect for bubs needing to sleep earlier than us at night. place was fine, but the 4 star rating is not our 4 star rating here in australia, it's more 3 star, but a great place to stay anyway. a week here was well worth it and very relaxing with a few water sports thrown into it and all the kids from what we could see at kids club enjoyed it. we couldnt use the service as bubs was too young, but others with ones her age, used the 5 hours of free baby sitting made avail for this age group of 0-2 years. we found our daughter was clingy so didnt feel at ease with leaving her, but would have felt very secure with the fijians, they LOVE kids. fijians do things in their own time too, so there is no rushing to get things done or get the food buffet re-stocked quickly, but they had great drinks and food service at the south beach restaurant. def get a meals package of 3 meals a day purchased before you leave (so glad we did), as their prices are very expensive and the drinks cost alot too. so stock up on bottles of duty free alcohol before and have a pre dinner drink for sure before you head to eat, as this is where they make their money. water was very expensive at the general store, which also has very little variety of things to buy, so make sure you take your own chocolates, snacks, and sunscreen, as this is all very costly there and they dont really have many if any snacks to offer others than choc chip cookies. had a terrific time though, but could see why some would be disappointed if you expect too much. i am glad i read loads of these reviews as it made me so pleased with the final result when my expectations were lower. the south beach area is very windy, but spend most time down at north beach and pool and all will be fine.

Breath taking beautiful island

Sitting on a palm-dotted beach with lots of Sands, Mana Island Resort and Spa. Mana Island has 3 Beach which are South, North and Sunset Beach.
The guest rooms are in that flank the central building Called 600 Block. Each room has its own balcony or patio with a view of the sea or or the tropical gardens surrounding the complex.

Mana Island is a breathtakingly beautiful island of dramatic lush, green, tropical rainforest clad hills and white sand beaches.

Mana is an idyllic Fijian island resort, surrounded by white sand, and crystalline coral reefs, that lies in the Great Sea Reef.

The food was fantastic, as good as in any top restaurant in Fiji. Every meal was consistently among the top meals we've EVER had in Fiji. This feat was especially impressive considering how mediocre the food was at the other five star resort we visited in other Island Resort in Fiji and including the Main Hotels.

I can not tell you how much we loved our trip. We had a group of 9 adults and 2 children from New Zealand and we had THE BEST vacation we have ever had.

The resort was superb; the activities including scuba diving, nature walks, nightly presentations and Bech Fire for the kids / Adults were amazing.

Everyone at the dive shop did a great job and was so friendly and helpful. They took care of all of our diving needs from the time we arrived to when we left.

But the absolute best part about the trip was the people: Fijians. All of the people there, without exception, were excellent. The managers were great and made us feel so welcome. I remember someone who was setting up for the morning telling me happy birthday at 6:30am before anyone else had woken up and wondered how in the world he knew it was my birthday! I don’t think I ever met him before that! The manager who played the guitar and sang happy birthday or congratulations just had this big welcoming, friendly smile on his face all the time and you could really tell that he loved his job. Your staff knew us all by name from day 1 and it felt as though they welcomed us into their home!

Mana Island is a picture perfect location and the snorkeling right in front of our room was incredible.
Our boys, 10 and 12 did not use the kids club although the people running the activities seemed to genuinely enjoy being with children and the kids were having a great time.
We filled most of our 6 night/5 day stay in the water - snorkelling, kayaking, swimming and sailing and enjoyed spending time as a family. We had so much fun together in the beautiful warm water that I would not hesitate to return, despite the poor quality of the resort itself. I read all the reviews before we went and could not believe that some people rated it so highly and some so low. In fact they were all correct. Mana is beautiful, safe and well suited to young families but I suspect other islands are equally so and I’m absolutely positive that other resorts must be better.

Firstly and most unfortunately, the reef has not been protected by the current owners and is quite damaged by poorly monitored water sports and excessive usage.
Secondly, the resort is not even close to 4star. It is VERY tired, unclean and although the service is friendly and relaxed, problems are not dealt with unless you ask several times. The pools are not as spectacular as they appear in the brochures and are full of young children. Please refer to my photo’s which show just how badly stained our sheets were and the state of the bathroom.

Arriving late (around 8.30 pm via water taxi) we were told there was no time for us to wash up and see our room before dinner (the Sunday night BBQ buffet). The food was disgusting. Dried out fish and meat that had been kept mildly warm in baine maries for longer than was healthy. There were also stodgy pastas and soft vegetable mixes. We were very disappointed and the next morning we booked into the South Beach Restaurant for the remainder of our stay. Breakfasts at the buffet (only option) were poor but toast and cereal with yoghurt were safe. Don't bother with coffee. Go to South Beach for lunch.

We had booked into an Ocean Front Suite as we wanted separate sleeping and living areas, and had specifically booked a suite with two doubles, but on arrival had been allocated a king bed and a trundle downstairs in the living room. When we called reception we were told there were no other rooms available and that someone would bring another bed for our second child. After about an hour (past 10.30 pm by this stage – children exhausted) my husband walked to reception to find out what was going on. Finally an extra bed was made up in our living area. Luckily we were told the next morning that the room we had requested was available. By this time we had seen the island in daylight and had decided to look past the problems and enjoy ourselves. After all this was our once-in-a-lifetime holiday!
We never did find out exactly what the full meal deal that we had purchased included. It is not on any resort information and we had received no details from our travel agent. We (adults) ate free everywhere, however some staff said the children were free at South Beach Restaurant, others said they were half price but on check out we found that we had been charged full price for their meals. The food at SB Restaurant was nice (not great, not changing but not at all disgusting).
We had a great holiday but only because the location was great. If I had the opportunity to return to Fiji I would try another resort, but if I won a free trip to Mana I would go in an instant.

Returned from Mana Island on 1 Dec 2010 after 8 days of perfect weather, fantastic snorkelling and friendly staff. Great for young kids - they loved the kids club and the reef is so close they could snorkel around the dropoff. We stayed in Ocean View Rooms on the South Beach, which had amazing views and were very spacious and well maintained. Great place for a family to slow down and relax.

I liked the food - lots of fresh local produce and great seafood. If you like fruit and veges, you'll be fine. Buffet MUCH better than other places we have stayed on the outer islands, and make sure you book into the South Beach Restaurant straight away when you arrive.

When one of our children got sick, the nurse and other staff were great, organising a trip to the mainland for treatment by the doctor, an off duty staff member even helped on the boat trip and at the port organised a taxi to the doctor's office.

I would also recommend booking into the Captain's Lounge on the boat on the way over and back, good value for a lot of extra comfort. And have a coffee at Lulu's at the port - must be the best coffee in Fiji. I can't believe how much the marina has changed, it's very pleasant now.

My husband and I had 7 days on Mana Island in September 2010, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I'd read some negative reviews on here before going and therefore really wanted to post my own review.
Accommodation: We stayed in the Island Bures. They are newly renovated with a spacious and modern interior, and the outdoor shower is such a fun touch and ensures you have a spacious shower without taking up space inside. The bures are spaced enough to give a feeling of isolation. I couldn't praise them enough, and thoroughly recommend this accommodation option.
The food: We had the breakfast buffet and couldn't fault it. The food is hygienically presented (all under cover) and there is an abundance of delicious fresh fruit daily, as well as omelettes, waffles, cereals and full cooked breakfasts. We never ate Lunch, because we brought a lot of our own food and aren't big eaters. We had one dinner in the buffet - the Fijian Lovo, and the food was delicious. We didn't go back to the buffet as we aren't buffet fans, so can't comment. We had the rest of our meals from either the South Beach restaurant (book early and request an outside table) and from Ratu Kini's Backpackers (50m down the beach). They were similarly priced (spent on average $70-$80 FJD for two with drinks at both each night) and the food was lovely and very tasty.
Beaches/Snorkelling: Incredible! Stunning snorkelling off both beaches. And if you walk around the edge of the island (outside the resort) you can easily discover your own private beach where you will likely not be disturbed for the whole day.
Spa: Loved it. It's easily 5-star. We had the Couples Milk Bath with sparkling wine and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

All in all I would definitely recommend this resort. My advice would be to bring your own alcohol as it can be expensive, as well as snacks for during the day. Explore the whole island, try dining at the Backpackers, and enjoy the incredible hospitality of the staff in the most picturesque setting.

Just returned from a few days on Mana Island and I loved the beaches, the snorkelling, the weather and the warmth of the Fijian people. The Resort itself has some issues with food and lack of water. We had an ocean view bure x 2 - these were fine older style rooms, clean and spacious with great views, though they made an error and could not supply two interconnecting rooms after having confirmed this via email when I booked. Myself and my daughter had massages & facials at the spa, and this was fantastic, highly recommend their services.

I've never expected gourmet anywhere in the South Pacific, but the nightly buffet at Mana (particularly the dinner) was on two occasions downright terrible.
We only purchased half board, which at $76FJD a day is approx 41aud per day; so its not exactly expensive and we utilised breakfast & dinner on this plan. Breakfast was fine, though they tended to run out of everything as the resort was packed. We only ate at the buffet because the South Beach Restaurant was booked out. As others have said, the food here is much better. It also doesn't seem to get over run with kids like the buffet does and so is a much more relaxing option for dinner.

Parts of the resort looks a little tired, but it was clean and the staff were all friendly and obliging. Fiji is currently in drought and there are water shortages and water pressure problems on this island (and many others). The water is turned off at night - we ended up filing a jug to wash our hands at night if needed. We also regularly lost water during the day, and had to delay showers etc until it returned. The gardens are not looking their best, there is NO lush tropical look at present, which obviously cannot be avoided when they are shipping in water from the mainland and utilising recycled water as best they can.

This place is a paradise for kids during school holidays but if you want peace and quiet this may not be the place for you during that time. By avoiding the resort facilities as much as possible and just sticking to the beaches and snorkelling/kayaking we tended to avoid most of the packs of kids except at meal times, and even then timed our meals late enough to avoid them.

We're stayed at Mana Island twice, firstly the bad. We stayed in the North Beach bure and the room was really tried (I mean really tired), the beds were hard and uncomfortable, the mattresses tired and dirty and the shower worked off and on. The food is very average with not a lot of options i.e. buffet or South Seas restaurant (I hate buffets so preferred to eat at the restaurant but you soon get sick of that too) , for a welcome change we ate at the backpackers who do a good fish burger.

The good, both beaches are fantastic with great snorkelling, our kids loved the kids club, the staff were fantastic and my oldest boy was sad to leave them, the night time activities are good but if you stay longer then 5 nights you risk seeing the same thing twice, the staff are friendly and we love the way they greet and farewell you with guitars and singing (Fijians can sing).

The resort owners need to seriously consider putting some of the profits back into the resort i.e. renovating the North beach bures but particulary the staff accomodation - which are overcrowded and disgusting, opening another restaurant to provide more options and therefore make it more attractive to stay longer. Also suggest music during happy hour and not shutting down the kareoke so early.
