Matamanoa Island Resort

Most the clientele were older couples or honeymooners; my partner and I are both younger and not married yet we still found this island to be vibrant and relatively social. The main activity staff really tried to get everyone involved in the activities. Fantastic snorkelling, great fishing trips, exquisite beach with powder like sand, Padi Scuba diving centre, sailing boats, plenty of sunbeds, beach volley ball, tennis, table tennis plus and a spa with a view straight out of a brochure.

The food was touch and go, had some fantastic meals and some ordinary ones but all in all above average for Fiji.

We stayed in a beachfront bure, they are beautiful, simple but everything you need and very clean, not sure the price difference but was worth the upgrade.

I'm not the type of person to go to the same place twice but will make an exception for this little slice of paradise!

Have already sent my parents who are going there next month.

We spent 10 days here on honeymoon in Nov 2011 and cannot recommend it highly enough! The setting is so beautiful, the staff are great, the facilities offer everything you could need for a wonderful holiday. We stayed in Bure No 7 which was the perfect location. The engraved wooden plaque left hanging on your door on the first night is such a lovely touch- and a great souvenir. The activities on the island are plentiful- there is always something to do, if you are so inclined. We did not use the pool, but it looked lovely. We were on a half board package, which was ideal. The breakfast is great so we never really needed lunch, and there is afternoon tea and cake if you get peckish later on. The quality of the food at dinner could be a bit better, but considering the location and how everything has to be carried on someone's back up the beach, you can't really complain.
The welcome and farewell songs each evening can become very slightly tedious if you are there for a while- but it is a different story on your last night when you feel like everyone is singing just for you! The farewell on the beach when you leave is really special.
Matamanoa has become our benchmark holiday- I just hope future holidays are half as good!

Room Tip: The lower number bures (1-2) are next to the helicopter landing platform. Bures 8 & 9 are right...

A truely lovely place. Wonderful beach, nice pool, no kids, but most of all great snorkelling. Off the main island of Fiji the snorkelling is a waste of time. That's because clay from agriculture, roading etc washes into the sea during heavy rain and smothers the coral killing it. But Matamanoa is too small to have been permanently inhabited in the past, so the coral is healthy, which provides protection for the beautful reef fish from predators.

If you can find a better place to spend any length of time please let me know. The facilities are probably not five star and if you were incredibly fussy you might fault the food and drink but it really doesn't matter when the staff and island offer so much. Friendly and beautiful, what more could you want?

The kind of place you would never go back to because you wouldn't want to spoil memories of perfection. (that and the fact that it is at the other end of the world)

Actually, ignore that....... I want to go back!!!

Matamanoa island was the last island we visited after another five, and we can say it was the most beautiful one. Also the resort was one of the best of all we've been to. The sand is so white and soft, it's like walking over flour. And the water is crystal clear, amazing colours... The palm trees, all the vegetation, amazing place...
We had booked a beachfront bure for two nights and it was fantastic. The room is spacious, spotless clean, a huge comfy bed and a living room and a bar with two tall chairs. There's also a tea/coffee making facility, and a terrace with sun loungers and a hammock, perfect for reading. There's private access to the beach, it's so so beautiful you can't believe it!
We were on our honeymoon, so they gave us a bottle of champagne and a basket of fresh fruit. They also put a board with our names on the outside of the bure's door. Of course they gave us the board as a souvenir.
The food was fantastic, a very big and tasty breakfast, very nice dishes for lunch and dinner.
The spa is also recommendable. We had a relaxing double massage at sunrise, on an open-air hut overlooking the sea and the sun coming up. It was the best massage ever! We were completely renovated after that. It was kind of expensive, but worth it.
The service was great, everybody so helpful and friendly, you just want to stay!
There are some activities planned for each day, but we couldn't get to do anything because it was raining the whole day, so we just dedicated to our reading. There's also a library, in case you don't carry your own books.
The music band at night is very good too! They make you sing a song from your country the night before you leave!

As the title of this review states, Awesome is the only way to describe Matamanoa Island.
We spent eight wonderful days (12-20 Jul) on the island. From the very first step off the boat we felt like part of the family on the island. We were welcomed on the beach by a number of staff, lead by Tima the Assistant Manager. We were ushered to the bar for a welcome drink and to fill out some paperwork. Within 20 minutes we were in our room.

We stayed in a beachfront Bure. Bure 4 on the sunrise side. Wonderful room. The sunrise side was a good choice. The only passing traffic on the footpath outside the rooms was people staying in other Bures. Very, very quiet and peaceful. On the sunset side there is the path to the regular rooms and also to the staff quarters so much more passing traffic. On the sunrise side it is much easier to get down to the beach from your Bure. A ten meter walk and you are there. The beach on the sunrise side has fixed beach umbrellas and sun lounges. There is nothing like this on the sunset side.

In the rooms there was no TV, telephone or Wi-Fi access. Internet access was available for free on only one computer in the main office. It was a very busy computer!! Mobile phone signal is available on the island if you have the right sim card.

After reading reviews prior to going we weren't expecting too much from the restaurant. What a surprise. Food was excellent at all times. (The previous reviewer "Jack B" must have been staying on a different island!!). We took the half board option which gave us dinner as well as the included breakfast. We had a big breakfast everyday and usually skipped lunch or shared a club sandwich or fish kokonda. Dinner served from 7pm was a different menu on a 7 day rotation. Dinner is four courses. With the half board for dinner, you can choose any three of the four courses. If you like dessert, you should try the crepe suzette. The chef comes out and makes it at your table. Very nice. Caesar Salad is also prepared at your table.

We would usually head over to the bar for pre-dinner drinks at 6pm. The muso's start playing in the bar area from this time. Most nights very few people would be around at this time which was a bit dissapointing for the band. I am sure if the island introduced a happy hour between 6pm and 7pm more people would come and listen to the music and enjoy a drink.

Drink prices were reasonable. Certainly no more than in pubs in Canberra. Beers from FJ$8.50 for local beer up to FJ$10.50 for impoted beer. Cocktails were FJ$26.

If it is your last night on the island, the musicians would come around to your table and play a song of your choice. Their repertoire is huge. At 8.30 each night, all the staff would gather for "Bula Time". New arrivals for the day were named and a welcome song would be sung by the musicians. After that people leaving the next day would be named and farewelled with a song called "Isa Lei". It is a beautiful song which had us in tears most nights!!

All of the staff were excellent, including the less obvious grounds and housekeeping staff. After just two days just about all of the staff knew our names. It was wonderful being welcomed with a "Bula" where ever we went.

The water sports team was particularly good. Rae and her team were always around and were excellent support in all the activities we undertook. They are a funnt bunch of blokes, always laughing and smiling. We are not into Scuba but enjoyed the daily snorkelling trips to the nearby reefs. We also enjoyed a trip to a local village where some of the staff live. The entertainment team led by Seko were great too. There was no pressure to become involved in any activities. The nightly entertainment kicked off at 9pm. Bar closed at 11pm.

If you after a secluded island getaway, with no kids, Matamanoa Island may be the place for you. It is not cheap, especially for a Bure, however it is a wonderful, wonderful place. We will be going back. We met a couple celebrating their 50th wedding annivesary. They were on their 13th visit to the island!!

Room Tip: Go with a sunrise side Bure. Awesome.

The manager was friendly as was our guide who took us on a walk up the volcano in the middle of the island, and kayaking around the island was fun. Here ends the good news. The food was inedible - "grilled" fish was in fact fried; when I asked them to make sure it was grilled the next time I ordered it, they fried it and picked off the crispy fried bits. It was worse than school dinner every time, to the extent that I ended up skipping meals.

The restaurant staff are so unfriendly - I dare you to try sending back any of the food (which you WILL want to do) - I dread to think what they do to it behind closed doors.

The diving school has an air of nonchalance, and not in a wonderful island-style - it just seems unsafe. We decided not to SCUBA dive with them based on this intuition, and went for a snorkelling trip instead - if need be we could swim back to the island. The boat broke down on the way back - no surprises there!

Fiji as a whole was a complete let down - a disappointing few days on this island (if it had been our honeymoon, heads would have rolled), and the worst flight of our lives with Air Pacific on the way home (again inedible fried and reheated food after wasting hours in a poorly equipped airport).

Do what I should have done: avoid Fiji and hit up the Cook Islands instead.

Room Tip: Make sure your room is far away from the pool (noisy Americans cavorting in it all night) and away f...
