“Wonderful Friendly Relaxing Island”
Reviewed 7 October 2012

Had a great relaxing holiday on castaway, great for families (we had our 10 and 14 yr old daughters with us) but quiet enough for couples too considering the island was full but each day you wondered where everybody was! Our only concern was that our ocean view bure was not ready so they upgraded us to a Beach Bure. Even though this was lovely and situated on the quiet side of the island right on the beach the last thing you want to do is settle into a Bure just to move 2 days later into your ocean view ( which was just the same bure wise just sat back a little further from the beach), it was a very disruptive day although we requested a late check out upon departure from the island due to the incovenience and it was granted so we had full use of our room and the resort before departing on the 4.30 sth sea cruise transfer back to denaru. PS the captains lounge is a nice way to travel if you dont like crowds and want a bit more comfort and airconditiong. Although on the way we sat outside the south sea cruise boat in the sun and it was gorgeous too. The island massages are well worth it with lovely settings. We had the meal plan well worth it, you can eat anywhere anytime and as we had a teenager who liked to sleep late and make her way out of the bure just before midday she would head straight to one of the eateries before joinng the rest of the family for our day of relaxation. There is a tennis court and ping pong table. Both pools are great the swim up pool bar is a bit of fun. Most parents keep this area child free or child quiet if their kids are swimming with them. The walk over the island is well worth it, the views are wonderful. Also if you like canoeing you can do this around the whole island and the views of the coral from your canoe is gorgeous and very clear. A bit of kava is well worth it too and even more special was the chance to head to the staff quarters (by invitation) and sit with the locals immersing yourself in their Kava ceremonies....a great opportunity. Banana boat ride and trip to shell village were great extras too and enjoyed by all. Make sure you snorkell right out front of the resort opposite the boatbure,,,, we found nemos, giant clams, reef sharks and many tropical coral and fish. The cocktail party on a wednesday night and fijian show are heaps of fun and nightly entertainment available each nicht (crab race, quiz nights, silly games etc) all fun too if you choose to be apart of it or not. The most enjoyable part of the holiday is the friendly fijian people, most are so so happy and friendly and interacting with them and their traditions are great. My daughter had her hair bradied at $1FJ per braid plus $3FJ per packet of beads and the ladies come to your bure to do the braiding. We didnt have much to do with the kids club as our kids are past that now but the word around the island and the look on the kids faces and the parents faces relaxing together without their kids said it all! The all day deserts are yummy and the lattes delicious!
Happy hour in the sundowner pizza bar is a good opportunity to have a hlf price cocktail while watcing the amazing sunsets...
Castaway is a little bit more pricy to other resorts we have been to but you definitely get what you've paid for.........

Room Tip: all bures same design just set in either garden, ocean view or beach frontage.

What can i add to the wonderful feedback already posted....Castaway Island is amazing! Gorgeous beaches, amazing staff, fantastic facilities, excellent accommodation, wonderful meals (definitely do Meal Packages), amazing pool.....i could go on & on. We had 4 nights there from the 17th - 21st September & didn't want to leave! 4 nights was definitely not long enough. We loved our experience on Castaway & met some wonderful people. We were made to feel special & felt like we were in Paradise!!! Our 2 sons aged 17 & 19 loved it also, and wanted to stay longer. There is something for everyone! I highly recommend Castaway Island & are already saving to go back! We had 2 nights back on the main land afterward, and nothing measured up to our Castaway experience.Castaway is amazing!!!

We're just back from our second time on Castaway Island in the last 2 years. Yet again it didn't disappoint. Even when the Island is fully booked, as it was both times we've been there, you just wouldn't know it. The number of Bure's and the size of the Island is perfectly balanced, this is without a doubt the best place we've stayed in Fiji and we've been to a few islands and resorts on the mainland.

Some of the staff even remembered us from our first visit which was really nice and it was very nice to see their smiling faces again.

God I miss Castaway already .... can't wait to go back in the future.

Room Tip: It doesn't matter where you go on this Island, we've stayed on both sides in Island Bure'...

‘Bula’ (hello)- you’d better get used to saying this 50 times a day! We were here for 12 days in September with our 2 girls aged 4 and 7. After a 12 hour trip from Perth, and arriving after dark, we decided to overnight at the Westin in Demerau (very comfortable) before taking the ferry cat transfer to Castaway the next morning. It’s nearly 2 hours to get to Castaway- with drop-offs at several islands on the way. You’re welcomed with a friendly minstrel greeting on the beach.

We never stay anywhere without first looking at the reviews on Trip Advisor. We were looking for an island getaway. Few such have such good reviews as Castaway Island which is why we chose it. We can do nothing but concur with the excellent reviews that most give for Castaway.

Arriving out of school holidays we were a little concerned that there might not be many kids around for ours to play with. Not a bit of it- it was teeming with kids and there’s no doubt that this is a ‘family’ resort. There was the odd honeymoon couple but if we were a couple without kids I’d probably choose somewhere else a little more tranquil. The kids loved kids’ club and were happy to be there for much of many days. With the kids able to eat between 5.30 and 6.30pm (they can eat later with their parents if preferred) and then head off to kids’ club we were able to enjoy a quiet evening meal, just the 2 of us. Being such a kid-friendly place we were surprised that there was no outdoor play equipment for the littlies. Nevertheless, the kids’ pool is a big hit and nice that the kids can run amok without upsetting those adults who like a little more peace and quiet. Kids can still use the adult pool if they don’t upset the adults!

We were on the North beach which is the ‘main’ beach (see the web-cam at http://www.castawayfiji.com/webcam) and certainly more sheltered at this time of year. We didn’t opt for a beach bure (room – pronounced boo-ray). Ours was the furthest from the main area but only a couple of minutes’ walk away. Because we had no traffic going past us it was very peaceful and undisturbed. I would opt for bures 17, 18 or 19. We were quite happy to be just back from the beach for the tranquillity of it.

The food is excellent. There is always plenty for the kids to enjoy with a range of choices from healthy to less-so that the kids love! With nowhere else to eat why wouldn’t you opt for the full meal plan? I guess you could go for just breakfast and dinner and have a snack by the kids’ pool at lunch but doubt it'd be better value. One annoyance, being on the full meal plan, was the never ending need to sign dockets whenever you had something to eat. The administration of this must be a nightmare and one that could be avoided if everyone was on the full meal plan. Drinks are reasonably priced. The local beers are fine and about AU$4, cocktails, in happy hour, are about AU$7. The wine option was expensive with very ‘average’ Aussie wines at about AU$40. It’s a hassle to cart them here but I suggest you take yours in duty-free (up to 4.5 litres/person). You can take these in to dinner- they advise that they charge AU$10 corkage but I don’t think they did for us. Worth it even if they do- to have what you really like. On the full meal plan you can choose a la carte or the buffet at each meal- either had a great selection. The all-day desert selection has a fabulous selection of waist-expanding delights (the ‘volcano’- chocolate soufflé is stupendous!). One night we chose the optional ‘extra’ of Singapore Chilli mangrove crab (AU$35 on top of the meal plan for 2)- it was so good I don’t even want to think about it!

My wife did her PADI diving open-water certification and I did 10 dives. Diving is great, water temperature was 27 degrees, good visibility and a range of dive sites from wall drift dives to giant ‘bombies’ teeming in fish life. The dive school is very professional and the dive team great fun. With a great dive boat pushed along by 2 x 200Hp outboards most dive sites are 15 minutes away or less. If doing a dive course here you can do it at your own pace there being no set timetable to complete all the skills, tests and dives. We used all their gear which is good-quality MARES dive gear.
You are lent snorkelling gear for the duration of your stay. Snorkelling off the beach is amazing, beautiful corals and a kaleidoscopic aquarium to behold.

We enjoyed taking out the Hobie cats for a sail (the girls’ first sail). I can still hear the giggling of our little one behind me as we were towed around the island on the ‘banana’. Even with the perennially full complement of guests I don’t think anyone ever had to wait their turn for a kayak. Some people took theirs right around the island. We didn’t but, instead, enjoyed the steep bush walk up to the top of the island to enjoy the view. We never had problems making a tennis court booking when we wanted to- good quality rackets provided.

Daytime temperatures were about 28-30 degrees and sometimes cool enough in the evenings for a light jumper. No doubt it’d be much hotter around Christmas.

To catch our flight home we had to take the water taxi back to the main island, instead of the ferry. This only took 45 minutes by speedboat. We were pleased not to have to take the slower ferry back via other islands. Given our time again we would have opted for the sea-plane or helicopter transfer just for the experience. Also when our holiday has come to an end we just want to get home so the quicker option is good for us.

Castaway was full of many families who have been there 2 or 3 times before which is a great recommendation. We left there feeling that we’d love to go back again. It’s an expensive holiday (certainly with flights from Perth) but it is good value.

Room Tip: For us- no value in paying for a beachfront bure. Quieter away from the beach but none is far from t...

We took our 14 year old for a week here and travelled straight to and from the Island by helicopter (highly recommend if you're pressed for time, but walk way down is quite steep and uneven so if you are older or unstable on your feet, or it's raining let them know you'll need assistance). We paid extra for an Ocean view room, but wouldn't bother to do that again as all the rooms were excellent (we were in 34 - very happy, but it was right behind plant nursery so when the Fijians began work... that's when we woke too - but played tennis every day and it was right nearby so suited us) and all are only moments from the beach. The meal plan worked for us and only a couple of nights delivered a disappointment - mainly due to our definition of mild curry being somewhat different to the chefs. I loved the Island made ginger yoghurt in the mornings and we especially enjoyed the Lovo meal. If you are there with younger children please respect the 'adult pool' is for adults - we've raised our babies and wanted (needed) to relax without screaming 4-8 year olds running around us...and for some reason even though it was school term the place was chokka full of kids. Castaway may like to consider only over 12 years old weeks because we'd certainly choose that if it was available. We took the outer reef snorkling trip option, but there was just as pretty and varied sea life and coral if you paddled around to the right of the Island past the water station and we enjoyed that a lot. It was as if we were the only ones there despite the resort being packed full. We also paddled by kayak to Malolo and Likuliku and back, but if you do that take some cash with you...we had water on us but didn't realise quite the distance of our impromptu journey. All in all a most enjoyable week and we will go back. Tip...reserve your table for dinner for the week at the time you want, book a massage time as soon as you arrive if you think you might like one and take half the clothes you think you'll need as the island is very relaxed and casual. The ice cream is free in the pizza shack, but not at the pool. The rooms are large, tea and coffee and a fridge in there if you are travelling with littlies. We had an wonderful time there together. Thank you to all the staff you were all friendly, attentive and helpful.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice and close to beach - perhaps the helipad side if you don't have small childre...

Of all the countries I have travelled to Castaway Island Fiji, is on the top of my list to return to beating Italy, New York and Paris (of course all of these places can I recommend to). If you are looking for a relaxing holiday where there is no pressure to visit every tourist site you can imagine then this is the place for you.
Friendly staff, clear calm ocean, white beaches and warm weather make this a place to return to time and time again.
The food was great the meal plan providing excellent value and can also be recommended.

Bula! Just arrived back from Castaway Island- sooo awesome! Beautiful bures with comfy beds, great layout & private. Photos don’t do them justice. Great food. We chose the meal plan and were happy with the variety and unlimited choice at all eateries- curries, burgers, pizzas, steak, seafood, Chinese etc…. We have 3 & 5 yr old daughters. 3 yr old is anaphylactic and staff were very aware. We ordered “special” food for her and had no trouble. Kid’s club staff and activities were great. Lots of variety- basket making, bracelet making, sand castle making, bush walking at night searching for animals, nightly game son the tennis court, crab hunting, toffee making, coconut hunting, husking & eating. Kids eating time from 530-630 pm was not compulsory but encouraged and really appreciated. It’s nice to have a quiet romantic dinner on a family holiday while kids are happily at kids club. Lots of free activities- snorkelling, kayaking, hobie cat, bushwalking, tennis, table tennis as well as paid activities scuba diving, banana boat rides, fishing etc… Great new kids pool and adult pool (separate). Fantastic family holiday- can’t wait to go back and wouldn’t go anywhere else! Vinaka Castaway Island xxx
