Four of us went on this trip (Ages 57 / 56 / 27 / 24) and we all LOVED IT!!! We were transported from Denarau which is a very long commute (as the other reviewers have made very clear) but well worth the time spent. If you're staying near Pacific Harbour it will obviously be less of a commute. Females should have a pair of shorts (or sulu/sarong) to cover their fanny at the end of the trip when you go into the village - they provide a bag that will keep your items dry on the river.
We had the good fortune of getting Moses as our guide (he is truly a gem of Fiji) but all the guides are very pleasant and fun so I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of them. We all kept saying how we felt like we had magically been placed in the movie Avatar or Jurassic Park....the scenery is phenomenal.
From what I understand, we were there while the water was on the low side so it was a little milder than usual but, none-the-less, we had lots of thrills (and spills) and felt it was one of the greatest experiences we've all had and well worth the money spent.
On that note....some people have written reviews stating the prices are too high but I don't think they are taking into consideration what it takes to make this happen. Here are just a few things that I can think of off the top of my head:
Employees: Guides / Bus Drivers / Office Staff
Equipment: Busses for transport on paved road / 4WD busses for transport on dirt road (in & out of river) / Rafts and Oars / Safety equipment (vests / helmets / first aid kits)
Overhead: Office & Storage Facility / Office Equipment & Supplies / Lunch provided while rafting
Taxes & Fees paid to the Govt: Yes, those evil things!
I'm sure there are plenty of other costs that I'm not thinking of. Also, keep in mind that all of the equipment takes a GIGANTIC beating and probably needs replacement pretty frequently (especially those poor 4WD busses). I would love to see the other reviewers manage to put together an operation such as this and make it less costly, I don't think they could do it! Oh yeah, don't forget the business owners are also trying to make a little profit for all their trouble and investment.....DUH!
The bottom line is.....do yourself a favor and book this trip, it's more than worth the cost and you won't regret it!
