“Rude homophobic staff and needs RENOVATING!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2013

**Prior to taking this holiday we made contact to see if there would be any issues with 2 men sharing the same room**

The following is our experience.

From the moment we arrived, we found the front desk staff to be very judgmental of the fact that two men were staying in the same room to which we were previously told it was permitted. This prejudice was made more evident when the bell boy showed us to our room and queried if we would like a second bed, when declining his offer utter disgust was evident by his facial expression.

For the remaining days we found staff throughout the hotel to be unapproachable and distant from accommodating any needs. This was reinforced when we were by the pool on Tuesday (our second day at The Pearl). Pool staff approached the other guests offering drinks and towels and we were simply ignored. Whilst swimming in the pool together, we observed staff members glaring at us and commenting among themselves making us feel extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome.

This along with other occurrences was our pinnacle moment to decide not to participate in any further group activities and minimize our presence in communal areas of the resort.

We reviewed when the next available flights were and given the fact the distance of the Pearl Resort to Nadi airport (2.5h), we had to remain at the resort until Thursday, resulting in us canceling the final night of our accommodation.

The next morning, upon returning our room keys we asked a different staff member if the transport had arrived, this particular staff member completely ignored our questions by not deviating from her computer screen nor verbally acknowledging our questions.
At this point we left the keys on the bench and walked out to the car that had arrived having to clarify with the driver that he was here to take us to Nadi Airport.

We found our time at The Pearl to be an extremely disappointing experience, Our room was below standard from what was advertised.
This was reinforced by finding a range of bugs in the bathroom at night and large amounts of mould throughout the bathroom. We were unimpressed to leave on our final day opening our door to find room service trays still in the hallways from the previous night, but now understand why the pearl has such an issue with bugs and rodents! Furthermore, the blinds, mirrors and wall furnishings were clearly dated, damaged and in urgent need of repair and/or replacement.

Of all the hotel properties we have stayed in worldwide, the attitude and manners of The Pearl staff is far from an acceptable level for any hotel in any country to provide to their guests.

Room Tip: We had an ocean view room, balcony door was damaged and had a faulty lock but given the remoteness o...

Awesome facilities. Big spacious rooms and a nice restaurants overlooking the large pool with excellent room service. Shower facilities are superb. Ask for a seaside view room. Restaurants, ATM machines and other facilities located nearby. However if you wish to visit the capital of Suva it is a fair bit of distance, 1 hour by vehicle so this is ideal fro those who wish to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Room Tip: Seaside view room is superb

We were staying in Pacific Harbour in a privately owned home. The Pearl was close by so we would visit the resort for happy hour and to dine in the restaurants. The food and service were top class, and the staff friendly and attentive. Our sons had great fun fishing in the river from the bar deck, while we sipped our cocktails. The grounds and pools are beautiful and well cared for. The beach runs along the front of the resort and is great for a stroll, although the water didn't look very clean during the time we were there, so I didn't go for a swim. My daughter and I visited the spa for a pedicure and were very pleased with the service. We also booked a snorkeling trip through the resort at an outer island which we really enjoyed. Although we did not stay at the resort, the many people we met there said they were very pleased with their choice. I would have no hesitation recommending The Pearl, it really is a lovely resort.

We inspected the room when we checked in and the mattress looked new. I am wondering if the mattress was replaced but the bedbugs were hiding under the mattress in the bed frame. (The beds have no box spring just wooden slats making for a very hard and uncomfortable bed). When I actually found one of the bedbugs crawling on the sheet (yes crawling on the sheet) I put it in a plastic bag and took it to the front desk and asked to speak with the hotel manager, who would not even see us. We asked for head of housekeeping who confirmed it was in fact, a bed bug.

The head of housekeeping took our concern seriously and she really is a gem. She moved us to a different room and attended to our infested room. The general manager---nothing good to say about her.

I am now trying to make sure I did not bring any of these things home with me. A big worry.

Room Tip: Look your room over thoroughly. Check under the bed and the wooden slats for bedbugs.

The Pearl (as the locals call it), is a modern hotel right on the beach at Pacific Harbour, an area on the southern coast of the main island, about half way between Nadi and Suva. It takes about 90 minutes in a private car (taxi) to travel from Nadi airport to the resort, but that can be an interesting little 'sightseeing' tour too as you pass through Sigatoka and numerous other smaller villages along the way. There are also buses for the journey, but we were told they take longer because of the various stops, and the cost is not that much different.

The resort sits on the mouth of a river and the location is ideal for kayaking up the river, snorkeling along the breakwater, or any other activity, land or water based, you could want. Tours can be arranged for you at their own, on-site tour desk where the friendly staff can offer suggestions of places to visit. I highly recommend a trip to the Cultural Village, a short 10-15 minute stroll up the road, where you can take in a guided tour of the village to learn some of the traditional Fijian culture, try Kava at the ceremony and watch the firewalkers do their thing.

The rooms are hotel style and many are recently renovated as the resort had changed hands not that long before our visit in May 2013. The first room they gave us, was a yet to be 'face-lifted' one and the air conditioner didn't work. a call to reception, expecting to get a maintenance person to sort it, resulted in a porter arriving who promptly whisked us off to the opposite end of the building to a new room! No trouble, no questions, just happy to oblige - which seems to be the Fijian way - nothing was any trouble. That room was a renovated one and equally as comfortable as the first looked anyway. It is personal taste, but we found the bed a little hard, but nothing to complain about, we still slept well every night. Every room has it's own balcony and the rooms either overlook the gardens or the ocean.

Buffet breakfast was served in the upstairs restaurant area, and was a good mix of hot and cold foods with fruit available too. The upstairs restaurant in the evenings is more of an a la carte affair with a modest dress code, while the downstairs 'Bistro' provided a more relaxed dining experience. The food was incredible at all venues and the staff are just so friendly and polite. There was a Happy Hour (for about 2 hours) every day too at both the bistro bar and the poolside bar, half price drinks! Take the chance to have a traditional Lovo Feast (if you can). The resort has one every week and it includes a great music and dance performance in traditional Fijian style

The grounds are very well kept and tropical, as you'd expect. Unfortunately for us, and this is no fault of the resort of course, the weather was rainy for most of our 5 night stay, but, it didn't stop us having a great time and forced us to have a more relaxed holiday for a change! (we often return from a trip needing a holiday as we wore ourselves out!)

Would we recommend the resort? Absolutely. Would we return? Most definitely.

Room Tip: Having a room with a garden view (facing away from the ocean) turned out to be benefit, as the rain...

The resort is directly on the corner of a river entrance and the beach. The grounds are very well maintained and has a nice pool. They have an activity board that changes daily and you can also organize to do other trips which I would have liked to go to the island snorkeling but unfortunately the weather was against us as it was very windy, cold and rainy but the staff did the best they could do under the circumstances. All the staff were wonderful. The lady on reception even organized for a driver to take us across the road to catch our bus to Suva. Now thats service.

Buffet breakfast is included and is adequate lunch and dinner menus had a wide variety and were yummy.

The room is basic but they have just started on doing a massive extension to the resort with more units, a harbour and they will be re-doing these rooms to fit in with the new buildings, so when that is done the place will be spectacular.

If I was heading down that way again I would not hesitate to stay there again but on the east side they do tend to get more wind, rain etc in comparison to the west side.

Room Tip: Go oceanfront.

We spent there four days to dive with the sharks, so we did not spend too much time in the hotel. The structure is not new, something that adds a certain charme, but very well kept. A beautiful, long and desert beach is a major asset. Rooms are clean and nice, the staff very helpful. The food is the weakest point: Their focus on Italian food is unfortunately not matched by the skills to cook it, although this can be a problem only for us Italians!

Room Tip: We stayed in an Ocean View room and were very happy of our coice.
