stayed at this hotel recently. we got 2 rooms, one for my parents and the other one for me and my brother. the other room is fine. we booked for standard room but they upgraded us to superior room upon our arrival. the room was big, but our room smelled cigarets. although the room has a no smoking sign, maybe those who stayed before us did smoke inside. the hotel is very accessible to nanjing road. the price is good for this type of hotel, i don't think you can find a hotel with that price in this area. but you can't expect much. the hotel is very very old already. they don't clean the room everyday... they just fold your sheets and change your towels, that's it. they don't change the glasses or maybe even vacuum the carpet (which looks very old and dirty)... Also, the bathroom was clogged on the 1st day and one bulb is busted. but they were accommodating, our bathroom was already repaired when we got back to the hotel.

another thing, the elevator was in the second floor. you have to go up the steep stairs before you could reach the elevator. they have a very cute elevator which can only accommodate 4pax at a time. i think you would have a hard time carrying your luggage if its big and heavy.

i will give this hotel a 3.5 out of 5 stars. recommended to those people with strict budget. very reasonably price at a very accessible area. however, if your willing to spend a little more, you may look for other hotels...

Room Tip: you can first book this hotel through phone. you may cancel booked dates if payment has not been mad...

We [Australian husband, Chinese wife and our son] wanted a convenient, inexpensive place to visit friends during our extended China holiday. Shangfu [Starway] is clean, comfortable [hard beds though-standard in China], friendly helpful staff [little English, so my little Chinese was greatly appreciated], and a few metres off Nanjing Donglu. Only drawback is some wall partitions are hollow timber, so you can get next door's noise; maybe inspect rooms and tap walls first. Free internet, but BYO laptop. Very honest and upfront people, and great cheap eateries on parallel Guangxi Lu where you'll be the only foreigner in the street, as well as big 8Y coffee at Macca's around the corner. Looked after our luggage for free: we'll definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Tap walls to check potential neighbor noise.

Check in this hotel after read reviews from tripadvisor. With the room price, it is consider reasonable since it is just located at Nanjing Road. Need to take your own luggage and walk up to stairs because elevator is located at 2nd floor and the elevator can cater for 2 person with luggage. Hotel staff is friendly. They even let me check into room before 12pm. The first room check in got some smell and they change a new room for me.

Does not have restaurant in this hotel but just beside the hotel, is food court.

Checked into this older hotel after staying in one of the more expensive hotels on Nanjing Road. It is a very good bargain for 298RMB/night. The hotel does not accept credit cards and will need to pay for each day in advance with cash. Access to the rooms is by the elevator which is on the second floor, and you will need to take your luggage up the steep stairs to the elevator. Initially we were concerned about our luggage with this small hotel, but everything went well and the hotel is safe. Our room appeared to be recently renovated and updated, and there was adequate towels and the water pressure was OK. You can not beat this bargain price and I will return if I return to Shanghai.

I am rounding my rating up to a 3 from a 2.5 (keep in mind) as I can't choose a half point. Got this as part of a Group deal for cheaper, but normally we would have paid 298rmb/night. I would agree with much of the previous review, but would also add that the water pressure was quite low and that the room we had one single TINY window. Not a huge deal, but if you're hoping for a view, look elsewhere. There is also of course the set of stairs you must climb in order to get to the elevator - If you're a heavy packer, I would warn against this place as carrying a bunch of heavy suitcases up and down stairs can be very unpleasant, not to mention the elevator is tiny and so fitting a bunch of luggage in their is impossible...

Overall, for what the hotel provides, it is adequate. If I was to go back to Shanghai, I would consider it, but would look for better options.

I stayed at this hotel from March 6 to March 13, 2011, with a small group of American students visiting local businesses over spring break. Overall, the hotel is in an excellent location for tourists whose major intentions in Shanghai are to visit popular attractions and to shop. It is a 5 minute walk to the People's Square Metro station and about 10 to East Nanjing Road station. The rooms are relatively spacious and the bathrooms generally look nice.

Having said that, there are several major caveats to keep in mind when considering this hotel. You will be staying right above East Nanjing Road, one of the busiest shopping districts in the world. There is constant noise and a barrage of fake watch salesmen, women selling flowers, and women selling themselves will pounce upon you asking for their goods. It's annoying (just yell "bu yao, xie xie" or speak in another language and they generally disperse).

Upon arrival, you are greeted by a tiny lobby with a smoking security guard and a desk worker who speaks nothing but Mandarin. You are also greeted with the looming appearance of a long staircase, because the elevator (an experience in itself) starts on the second floor. If you dare to take the staircase, be cautious of the sometimes uneven heights of the stairs. The elevator smells and can only hold 4-5 people if you like being a sardine, and it has a very feisty door close.

The rooms and hallways are covered in red and yellow carpet, along with a ton of black splotches from shoes, feet, and God-knows-what. You have to use your hotel key or some kind of card to turn and keep the power on. My room was perpetually freezing, although I tried to turn the AC up to 30˚C. The toilet works once in a while, and the housekeeping staff will only give you half a roll per day. The water temperature likes to change its mind every day and the hot you enjoyed once will scald you the next. The bed is made of wood, but although it seems weird, I slept relatively comfortably - more sheets or a thicker comforter would have been better.

No breakfast is served, but there are tons of local stands and restaurants that serve for unbelievably low prices, unless you need Starbucks or Costa every morning. The Internet is available through Ethernet and is super slow.

I would recommend this hotel to budget travelers who like to be in the middle of it all and those seeking a truly "Chinese" hotel on the border between Chinese Shanghai and Western Shanghai. I would not recommend it to the common Western traveler or tourist - the Royal Meridian is right across the street and has a full-service elevator.
