“Nice Little Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2014

Metropolo Dahua is a very acceptable destination for western travelers. The property has been renovated in beautiful style from top to bottom and is a convenient location for conducting business downtown as well as in the west suburbs. The hotel offers most amenities one would expect in a five-star at a very moderate price. Included breakfast was satisfactory for western tastes, and several excellent western style restaurants are located within a short walk. Desk staff have fluent English, and other staff make an effort to understand and cater to non-Chinese speakers. I would certainly consider returning on my next trip to Shanghai.

Room Tip: Although rooms on the south side might be quieter, my room overlooking the Yan'An Expressway was...

Thank you for sharing your comments about this first hotel in the new Jinjiang MetroPolo brand. This is indeed a smaller boutique property with art deco exterior and chic contemporary interior designs. Glad that your staff encounters were positive and that many could speak enough English to meet your needs. At breakfast we have tried to cater the menu items to both International and Chinese guests and open around 6.30 am for the early birds. I recommend to international guests either the suites or the balcony rooms as more space and more adventure. I hope you were also able to enjoy the FREE evening social drinks between 5 pm and 6.30 pm during your stay? Y'all come back and see us real soon. We have blue skies again today.

I stayed at the Metropolo for four nights in March and was blown away by the quality of the hotel for the price. Super stylish, hip and well appointed, I travel to Shanghai a lot and believe you would be hard pushed to find somewhere that ticked as many boxes as the Metropolo. Housed in a historic building, the hotel has the vibe of a 5 star boutique hotel, ultra contemporary and well designed. But for me the biggest bonus was the free (working!) wifi in all the rooms (so convenient if you're on business), the great location (close to Jiangsu Lu and Jing'an Temple) and the fact that they even have a small gym. I wanted for nothing and staff were also polite and friendly. I will be staying there again and recommending everyone i know to as well. A real gem.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side have balconies and more light and the suites are great value.

First off THANK YOU for staying at our first MetroPolo Hotel in Shanghai. We are so glad to welcome you and that your experiences have been better than terrific! The hotel designs are edgy and chic, and all entrusted in the shell of a classic art deco building from the 30's. This summer we will open two more new remodeled hotels in Shanghai. Thank you for your business and come back and see us again please.

Been traveling every year for 12 years in China and always looking for a good hotel at a reasonable rate and found one in Shanghai. My wife is Chinese and go to visit family every year and always do side trips. Generally, I have found Chinese hotels for a vacationing traveler less maintained and short on what services you tend to expect than what you find in USA unless you want to pay and stay at high priced hotels. Yea, this one passed on every area of concern. Room rate was reasonable (much cheaper and better rooms than staying on the Bund), was very clean and décor was very nice and maintained. Service by staff was excellent. Free breakfast was the best of all the hotels I have stay when traveling in China. Location was only a 3.50 cab ride to the Bund (a must see) and or an easy to take bus ride (.35) 2 yuan cost (Bus number 71) at a stop one block east on Yan An Rd away. Be sure to have 1 Yuan coins for payment. Walked around the area and found very good restaurants, old historic buildings and most importantly a safe feeling on the streets even at 1:00am.

Thank you for trusting our new lifestyle select service brand for the China mid market range. Dahua is an historic 1937 art deco building with an all new chic interior makeover last year. Glad you found the service better than many in China, we do work on that every day, and it is not an easy accomplishment. Also really pleased you enjoyed the breakfast buffet as it seems impossible to please everybody with our blend of east meets west food selection. Our area near Jin An Temple and shopping is safe and is enjoyable to walk around. Come back and see us next year in Shanghai, we appreciate your business. Thank you

This hotel was recommended by a local friend, so we decided to try it rather than the usual 'brass & glass' chains. What a terrific surprise it was - the décor is eye-catching and very modern. Whilst not particularly imposing from the street (the first taxi missed it twice!), it was worth the effort and the very moderately priced suite we booked was wonderful - king size (super comfortable) bed, huge bathroom with separate bath and shower and toilet room. Possibly the only criticism is that there is a lot of furniture which fills up the room a little too much and leaves less space for suitcases etc.
The street noise is very muted, but (on the 5th floor) we still heard the buzz of car horns which is incessant in Shanghai - it didn't affect our sleep at all.
Staff worked very hard to help with any queries and some spoke excellent English, while others probably need to improve if they want to attract the Western tourist trade. The restaurant food was excellent for lunch, and the (included) breakfast was adequate considering they are currently mainly catering to Asian palates. Wifi was free and good standard.
Location is a bit further out than some would like, but the taxis were easy to organize and very cheap, so we didn't mind not being in the thick of the touristy areas.
We were looking forward to meeting the expat manager, Christopher, but he must have been away during our 3 night visit - next time perhaps!
We would strongly recommend this hotel - you'll be amazed at the value for money.

Thank you for trusting a new hotel and a new brand for your adventure in Shanghai. Sounds like it was an excellent experience and I am sorry we did not meet up. For the most part the double glazed windows do keep out the traffic noise, but Shanghai drivers do enjoy using their car horns. We are considering adding luggage racks in the brand standards as you mentioned space for storage. Yes these bathrooms and design colours are terrific, we agree. The small cafe serves Chinese cuisine for the most part with an international crossover for breakfast; best meal of the day right? Also I hope you enjoyed the FREE Evening Social that we started for this brand, if indeed you were told. Thank you for the business we will have 30 MetroPolo hotels within the year. Journey Safe.

Super Good to hear from you. When you stayed in November 2013 this boutique had just re-opened in its historic art deco shell. As you say we added a very chic design to the public space and unique guest rooms. You should try a balcony room on your SH return? This is first hotel in a new mid market tier brand for China, Jinjiang MetroPolo. By year end we plan another 30. Our goal is the friendly, professional even playful service, while offering great value add such as the FREE social hour daily. Ah yes and clean rooms a must have. Happy CNY and we can welcome you back soon on next journey from India..

Our stay at the new MetroPolo Dahua Hotel was an eye-opener, from several perspectives. First and foremost, this hotel provides a lot of style for the money. The interiors are contemporary and the fit and finish is excellent. The exterior is so sleek, hardly anyone can believe that it was designed in 1930 by the most talented architect of Shanghai's Art Deco heyday, Laslo Hudec. History buffs will be delighted at the number of historic houses in the neighborhood surrounding the hotel, too (including one of Hudec's own homes).

The bathrooms look like those in five-star hotels. Great shower. Definitely some way to go with training the new staff, but everyone is friendly and eager to please. Wifi, TV, etc. etc. all top notch. And a beautiful lounge on the ground floor for unwinding after a day of exploring Shanghai.

And I can't explain it, but I had the soundest sleep I've had in years. The beds are of "heavenly" calibre -- not the hard mattresses that you encounter at so many "value" hotels in China.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side are quieter.

ALL TRUE. Thank you for the comments. Yes we have only been open a few weeks and staff hospitality and technical skills coaching is indeed on going daily. There seems to be a shortage of service trained staff in our neighborhood so that means continual observation and training in our hospitality basics. We get better every day as our staff have shown they are eager to learn and grow with a smile. Thank you for commenting on all the history, it makes the Dahua hotel unique to others. This is the first in a new mid market value added hotel brand MetroPolo by Jinjiang, with 40 by the beginning of 2015. The Classiq variation will all be in historic buildings. Thank you for the business.

I had the honor of staying for 3 days in this wonderful boutique style hotel during their 1st week of soft launch in early Nov. It's style is more for those who loves something that is much more arty, stylist...Not big a property, I think it's about 100 rooms, therefore you will not see too many people around as well. If you are one who needs lots of facilities, this might not be suitable for you. Friendly staffs, always with a smile but sorry I can't tell you how fluent is their english as I do speak mandarin but I don't think that it would be too big an issue as they've got an expat as a VP there. He is a fabulous gentleman, who is always out to help out and without a doubt, always seen at the lobby in the morning. Very reasonable price maybe due to pre-opening. Hopes it stays that way

Pros:-
Room is artistically done up. Bed is comfortable yet firm. Designer's toiletries. At least an imported LED TV with numerous TV channels. Location is vey near town. 10 mins walk from subway line 2. 1 station away from Zhongshan Park & Jingan Shi.

Cons:-
There's a flyover in front of the hotel therefore some guests may find it a bit noisy but for me it's ok and also windows come double layered. Breakfast is quite simple but provided free, I am fine as I just need some food in stomach before heading out for work.

Overall:-
To me it feels like home especially with the room decor, it's something really like your home feel. I am glad that I have found such a gem after visiting Shanghai for so many yrs. I look forward to my next stay there. Very good rating given to leave room for them to archive excellent...hahahaa

Note:-
For those who are looking for big properties with lots of facilities, this may not be your cup of tea.

Room Tip: You may like to request for a room that is away from the main room

Always super good to hear from our guests. I believe this to be accurate account of the hotel during soft opening. We have added some extra double glazing to all rooms now, so noise is less of an issue. We are indeed boutique, chic and contemporary in design and we will match that with the service culture these first months. We certainly appreciate the business and thank you very much for staying with us and invite yo back. Lower promotional Prices will remain to spring, but the brand MetroPolo will always strive or value added amenities.
