“Rooms are super small”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 March 2013

Dont go by the pictures you see online..The rooms are super small. For 400 yuan.. i dont expect a lot but at the same time i dont expect a room in run down condition. the fake plastic carpets are torn. the bed was smelly, the wardrobe smelly. And finally i would say go to this hotel if you are tight on budget. go to this hotel if you dont mind small things.

The guys at the front of the hotel who helped me park are very friendly bunch..

Room Tip: Cheap Hotel... all the rooms are super small. there is no view.. its a decorated jail!!

Located near the Shanghai Indoor Stadium metro station and not too far from the international airport, the FX Hotel is situated near some nice bar streets. For only 3 or 4 rmb you can go to the city center and the Bund, with 1 or 2 transfers. Ideal for someone who wants to explore the best places in the city.
The room I got was one without a window (low budget traveler). I did not bother too much, because I was only there for my sleep. The room itself was small, smaller than the other rooms, but everything fits perfectly. The decoration was somewhat with style, although some details could improve (some repainting, there was no real minibar etc.). I had good nights here.
The service was ok, nothing special really. Most of the people could understand and talk English, so that was good.
All in all not a fantastic place, but it has everything you need to have a pleasent stay in the wonderful city of Shanghai.

Honestly, I've been to Shanghai 3 times in the past 1.5 years. I've stayed here all 3 times. The staff speaks English, the rooms are modern, but small, and the surrounding area is the best. There's wifi in the rooms with a landline plug and it is perfect for traveling businessmen or people on the go. Unfortunately on this last stay the internet didn't work on the 3rd floor, so make sure to ask to move rooms early if it matters to you. There is also a DVD player to borrow with fake dvds (big selection). There are only 2 working English channels (HBO and National Geo). Aircon at 17 C isn't very cold. Not sure why. All the floors smell like smoke even if they are non-smoking. The rooms are fine.

This place is far from the Pudong airport (190rmb) or via Maglev/Metro (70-80rmb each), but once you are there, you'll love it. The Shanghai Stadium metro stop is right across the street inside a mall that has a Yang's Fried Dumpling (MUST GO MUST GO more than once too), coffee shops, Starbucks, Honeymoon Dessert, Happy Chili Resto, and a few doors to the right is a great breakfast spot (not the cafeteria style one). A few doors to the left is a bank with foreign exchange (super slow, so if you are from the states and have B of A, uses the China Construction atm fee free in the metro station). Visit the Shanghai stadium. There's a MAO restaurant there that is really good.

I highly recommend this place if you are looking for value and convenience.

I recently stayed in the FX hotel Xujiahui hotel for the 2nd time, and once again, a particular front desk attendant provided extremely poor customer service.

The first time i stayed in the hotel, this particular front desk clerk " Jane" asked me in a very rude manner who's booking it was for, and proceeded to act very rushed and rude. I asked for a non-smoking room, however, she simply stated that there were none available without even asking the back office. During the first stay, there were numerous times when no one was attending the front desk, thus no guests could ask any questions. For the second time, another front desk attendant, "Betty" checked me in. This time, it was obvious that the attitude was much better than that of Jane's attitude. However, on the second day of my stay, i asked Jane a question, and she failed to acknowledge me even when i was asking a question (extremely rude).

IF JANE does not want to work at the hotel, then she should just quit her job. Treating guests with disrespect and acting superior to guests makes FX Hotels look like a 2 star hotel at best. I would recommend that because of this front desk attendant's poor behaviour and work attitude, some disipline should be given.

Below i have listed some major room problems. Please review these, as i will be posting them on Trip Advisor and other websites soon.

1) Music in the hallway too loud late at night
2) Sound too easily flows from different rooms, noise at 2am in the night
3) Poor ventilation, with cigarette smell in central ventilation throughout the stay
4) Condom Wrappers on the floor (not cleaned)
5) No slippers placed in room (on 2nd day)
6)No bed side counter (bed is right against the wall)
7) Very Poor Tv signal

However, i will say that the housekeeping staff are quite polite and makes your stay pleasant.

However, Jane is the only major problem of this hotel.

Room Tip: Just avoid this hotel

Arrived hotel at 7am, early check-in request could not be accommodated because housekeepers have not reported for work - there were no clean rooms. Waited at the lobby till 9am but was entertained by a Chinese movie playing on a small LCD screen. Could not fault hotel for this since they do not have round-the-clock housekeeping.

First impressions:

1. Hotel: Good amenities nearby, including a shopping mall just opposite the hotel. Metro station is incredibly near (just across hotel). Did not take the metro since taxi is cheap.

2. Lobby: Neat and tidy.

3. Room: Basic room is small for China standards. I was expecting room to be larger (more walk space). Since I was traveling alone, it did not matter. But I do foresee space issues for couples or at least, travelers with more baggage. I traveled with one cargo luggage and when luggage is opened, it blocked the entire walkway leading to the toilet.

4. Toilet: Excellent rain shower + wc with strong flush.

5. Staff: Very tired and overworked. Less than enthusiastic attitude.

Overall, hotel's location is great but be prepared to do some traveling on the metro or taxi if you wish to head to the heart of the city. The smell of cigarette is extremely strong since smoking in permitted indoors (lobby, lift landing, rooms). If you have zero tolerance for such smell, please go somewhere else.

FX Hotel is situated right opposite the National Stadium MRT line. Food and entertainment is within reach and there is a shopping arcade just a block down from where the hotel is. There is a very famous Japanese shochu bar serving authentic ramen and yakimon around the corner. It is a must try ! It's called Kota's Kitchen. Turn right when you exit the hotel and wall straight down until you reach the perpendicular road. It's on your right. The rooms are neat but can be small for those who are claustrophobic. If you're a non-smoker ask for the non-smoking rooms. You want to avoid the lingering smoke smell from the previous guest. Overall it's a neat and stylish boutique accommodation.

My husband and I have visited Shanghai twice in the last 1.5 years and both times were impressed with the value and location we received at this hotel. You get hot water, clean rooms, free internet, cable TV, comfortable/warm beds, free bottled water, and great customer service. The strange thing is that the bathroom is made of all glass, so if you are sharing a room with someone you aren't THAT close to, you need to draw the drape and stay on your side of the room. We didn't even have a door on our bathroom, so it is a very open feel.

The best part of this hotel is the location. It is situated a bit far from the Bund and the tourist attractions, but it's located across the street from the very easy to use train/subway system (we don't speak mandarin) and next to a lot of great/authentic Chinese food. Across the street from the hotel is a small mall, with 2 of our favorite restaurants, a Schezuan place on the top floor and a Yang's Fried Dumplings (must try) on the bottom basement floor. There's also a Happy Lemon in that mall if you like milk tea. On the right and left of the hotel within 1-2 blocks are lots of different dimsum style breakfast spots and bakeries. You will not go hungry.

On the corner there's a bank for you to exchange money (bring your passport), but be prepared for a line. If you are from the states and have Bank of America, you can go to a local China Construction bank and withdraw from the ATM with no fees.

Anyway, love this place and would highly recommend it! The price is also really reasonable!
