Grand Kempinski Hotel Shanghai
Ranked #14 of 5,222 Hotels in Shanghai
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 5 August 2014

The hotel is amazing, from the location - in Pudong, close to any main attraction and a step away from the "old city" - to the facilities, everything is pretty much perfect in the hotel. The restaurants and bars offers are varied and the bar has an amazing view at night on the Oriental Pearl Tower.
The service is friendly, helpful and attentive.
The rooms are simply amazing, spacious with all needed amenities.
I would recommend this hotel to any traveller going to Shanghai!

What I can say? The hotel is pure luxury. Starting from the huge hall, passing from the room and finishing with breakfast buffet.
IMPORTANT: if you are NOT a smoker specify it upon your booking. I did not do that and once I entered the room the smell was terrible. I asked for a change, but they want allowed me.
Last: good location only for business.

I stayed here for 3 nights on a recent business trip. The location of the hotel was great. It is basically within walking distance to IFC Shanghai and most of the new skyscrapers in the area. I had to run to meetings throughout the whole stay going in between various locations in Pudong and the hotel and nothing was more than a 10-15 minute ride. The overall service was not too bad. I had some urgent parcel coming in which the concierge picked up for me and called me to notify my package was ready for pick up. The rooms were relatively new and spacious. I checked in to a two bed suite as the king bed were all fully booked and they were big enough. Bathroom amenities were adequate and there was no worry about missing toiletries.

I basically tried all the restaurants in the hotel during my stay. There is a bar on top of the hotel with decent views of the nearby neighborhood. There is an Italian restaurant, a Spanish restaurant and a Chinese restaurant on the second floor. Breakfast was served on the ground floor and the choice of food during breakfast was quite good offering both Western and Chinese style breakfast. I had a lunch meeting in the Italian restaurant and was quite surprised with the food there as I had low expectation for it after a rather disappointing experience at the Spanish restaurant. The Chinese restaurant was mediocre and you would probably find better local delicacy for the same price but since it was conveniently located it still has its upside.

Rooms come with wired access but wireless Internet were subject to charges. This could be an issue for anyone who has a small business laptop or tablet with no LAN plugs.

All in all not a bad choice in such a central location for a very reasonable price.

I spent four nights at the hotel during a recent business trip and found the facilities and service to be very good. the location is very central with easy transport options across the city, and plenty of restaurants nearby and a reasonable shopping mall to pick up any extras you need during your travels. would certainly stay there again

We spent two nights here. While the hotel is in a great location, we were abhorred by the staff at the front desk at both check-in and check-out. Upon arriving, the staff couldn't wait to sell us mooncakes, which is quite inappropriate. On both occasions the staff members were unfriendly and put on an attitude as if we owed them. A major disappointment was that the pool was closed for maintenance but we were only informed upon check-in. The only exception was the bar tender at Red Passion, who made the stay slightly more bearable. In general, service at this installation is a step-down from the previous management team from Grand Melia. I hope Kempinski would train their staff instead of dressing them better.
