The Bund Riverside Hotel
Ranked #157 of 5,159 Hotels in Shanghai
Reviewed 25 November 2013

We booked through a group tour and wasn't expecting much. The Bund Riverside completely exceeded our expectations. We had a room on the 11th floor with an incredible view of the city and river. We were 3 short blocks from some of the best shopping, a stroll along the river and access to the rest of the city. The breakfast buffet was delightful. The rooms were extremely comfortable (minus the chinese firm beds) and we enjoyed the free in room wireless access.

We stayed for 3 nights and found the hotel to be very nice. So close to Nanjing road and all of the shopping, it is a very easy 5 min walk down practically one street. The staff were great and the concierge booked us to go on a boat ride up the Bund at night and organized for us to go to an acrobatic show. We also purchased train tickets to go to Xian and Beijing from the front desk with absolutely no problems. Was a very good price and would stay here again without hesitation.

Room Tip: Higher the floor the better the view of the Bund.

The main upside of this hotel is its great location. Within 5 minutes you are either in the East Nanjing shopping street (and the East Nanjing Rd. metro station) or on the Bund. Consequently, on the higher levels there are rooms with view over the river and the Pudong new area.

The rooms are pretty standard for the hotel class, though the carpets are a bit filthy and would need to be exchanged. There's in-room WiFi, the password is noted on the access point that is plugged into one of the power sockets.

We also found both the service nothing to rave about. Receptionists may be able to help you with a varying command of English, but are not always on their most polite behaviour. Contrary to our experience in other hotels we stayed in in China, there was absolutely no flexibility about the check-in time: When we arrived, we were told that the room was ready at 2:00 pm sharp. At least they allowed us to store our luggage until we returned.

The Chinese breakfast dishes are boring and bland, if you don't mind, go with the Western options instead. Even for those, the quality can vary, at one point I found myself having to pour away cold coffee. Concerning the food, we considered the freshly made pancakes to be still one of the best options. Service at the breakfast is slow as well, on all three days on which we had breakfast, there were still plenty of uncleaned tables when we arrived.

I can recommend this hotel for its good location, though in terms of overall quality it's just average.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view over the river and the Pudong new area

The room was allright, except for the bed that was very hard. When I told this to the front desk receptionist he just couldn't believe and express serious doubts looking absolutely atonished with my complaint... No problems with wifi.

At breakfast I asked for cheese, which seems to be unknown in China, but nobody understood English except one cook who spoke a little. He gave me grated cheese to make a sandwich! This wouldn't be a big issue except for the fact that ALL the staff was joking, laughing and even singing (one of the waitresses sang the song that was playing), texting, but completely indifferent to customers. Only one person was cleaning the tables not participating in such a happy meeting. He didn't wear a uniform so I don't know what was his position. No one came to the table to serve coffee, milk or tea as it is usual. When we left the room by 10:00 am they were also leaving the room as breakfast ends by that time. Probably you may think I am exaggerating but believe me it was true: the staff start running, pushing each others, shouting and laughing. We felt totally transparent for them. When we arrived by the lift there was a kind of small cabinet with a lady and a man. The man was sleeping at his desk with the head on his arms. Amazing!
When I went to the front desk to settle my bill, the receptionist in a rude manner without looking at me said "Credit Card". Please, is an unknown word for him. In my opinion this Hotel has a very poor management as professionalism doesn't exist. To be fair I must say that the boy who took the luggage to the room on my arrival was friendly and spoke english. And this is a 4 star Hotel, not a cheap motel by the roadside. It is a very central Hotel in case you don't worry about these issues.

The hotel is worn, tired, and not especially clean. The rugs should have been replaced a decade ago. The most disappointing piece was the attitude of the staff at the reception desk. There was some confusion with our reservation and they made no effort to listen, or accommodate. The rooms are cramped and lack amenities. The TV is on top of a lage cabinet with no shelves or drawers - it is a large empty space. In fact, there are no drawers, shelves, or anywhere else to put anything that does not go in the closet. There is another large cabinet, no doors, with no shelves o drawers again.
When we asked for an iron and boar d- why was it not int he room ?? - it took three calls and 45 minutes to come.
We ordered a martini in the small bar, While the bartender was quite pleasant, she spilled two gin martinis. Finally, with good humor, my husband actually made the vodka martini ordered - which was served in a wine glass. The breakfast buffet is adequate at best.
The location of the hotel is a definite plus. It is a 5 minute walk to Nanjing Pedestrian Street and less than 15 minute walk to the Bund. However, there are other hotels with an equal location - book one of them.

One our first night we were upgraded to the Executive Floor - a very nice suite with a great view of the city. When we were moved down to a tour reserved room it was a different story. For instance the carpet was simply filthy. When we asked for another room - the carpet was little better and there was even take out food left from the previous tenant. As in many Chinese hotels the beds were very hard and uncomfortable. The food was average at best. The best thing about the hotel was its proximity to the areas main shopping street and the the Bund,

Room Tip: Insist on an upgrade. The Executive Floor seemed almost empty

We arrived in Shanghai in the middle of a stifling heat wave, which put a dampener on outdoor activities.
The hotel itself was adequate but starting to look a bit shabby. The front desk were efficient, but not everyone spoke english, and they were not very forthcoming about tourism advice.
The room was adequate, but the bed was hard, and the air-conditioning was barely adequate.
The hotel was well situated in walking distance to the Bund and Nanjing Road.
