CHAI Living Serviced Apartments
Ranked #2 of 799 Shanghai B&B and Inns

Chai Living is definitely the most charming, comfortable boutique B&B you can find in Shanghai. The building is located near the end of Suzhou Creek where it meets Huangpu River. From the room, you have this memorizing view of Shanghai. I remember in the early mornings, I would watch the sun comes out behind the skyscrapers, and buses and bikes run through the bridge not far away from the building. At night, when the city lights up, sitting by the window in my Chai room with a glass wine, was a perfect way to slow myself down, enjoy and relax.

The mixture of art-deco building with a futuristic view right outside of your window, the modern comfort with charming interiors, a location few steps away from the historical Bund all made my stay with Chai an unforgettable experience.

Chai staffs are very professional and helpful to answer all my questions and requests. I can feel the people running and maintaining the place are genuinely friendly and happy to serve the guests. I just can't wait for the next time to be back there again! Let's hope more people will get to see and enjoy this wonderful spot in Shanghai!

We check out tomorrow from Chai Living and decided to write the review while we can still breathe the scented oils in the apartment and see the spectacular view of Pudong. My husband is sitting at the window taking his 1000th photo of the view. We are in the Rice Paper room which is all neutrals, beautiful white linens, gorgeous little bathroom. Rice Paper is one of the smallest apartments but with my husband and 2 year old daughter the room is ample. Its got a great little kitchen and a fabulous washer/dryer! Very handy if you have been traveling for awhile. The location is fantastic ... walking distance to the famous Nanjing Road (even for me who is heavily pregnant). However, if you are not interested in old Shanghai then I probably wouldn't recommend the place. Its in the old Embankment Building which for us is a dream come true. We spend every trip in Shanghai looking for old buildings and trying to get as close as we can. This time we are inside and living in it! But this is juxtaposed with the apartment which had all the mod cons, plus a little luxury. I also like that they don't waste money on plastic combs, tooth brushes we never use or little shampoos. Instead they spend their money on beautiful L'Occitane soap and heavenly smelling essential oils which are put on every day by house keeping. Our only teenie tiny criticism is that the kitchen needs a few more bits and pieces ... a cutting board for example, a teapot or strainer for the loose leaf tea which is provided but we couldn't drink because of the absent teapot or strainer and a good cutting knife for the fruit they provide. Just a few more basics are need to make breakfast. But that said, the staff are so friendly if we had bothered to ask I am sure they would have sent it up promptly. We just weren't bothered as we were too busy enjoying the place. The complimentary breakfast is also great. They don't go overboard which was refreshing. Just good quality muesli, swiss yoghurt, toast, jam, butter and fruit. What we would normally eat at home. The nespresso machine is also a lovely touch. So we would definitely return to Chai Living. We would probably choose a different apartment just to experience more of the owner's impeccable decorating! And one more thing, Chai Bites was shut because of the holidays. We would definitely like to try the food. It looks quite gorgeous through the window.

Room Tip: I don't think you can go wrong with any of the rooms.

My husband and I stayed here for a week after selecting it because of it's ratings and reviews on Trip Advisor. We stayed in the purple room which was beautifully decorated around a purple theme. As with all the Chai Living apartments, it had a lovely view over the creek (being on the 8th floor) and across to the Pearl Tower and other high rise buildings. It was an easy walk to the Metro situated behind the building, but we sure to use the crossing, as the roads are busy and chaotic. The fake market there is also a bit of fun, but bargain hard. There are also a couple of little supermarkets, for extra milk, tea bags etc. Everything in the previous reviews is true. The building is rickety with a slow lift, the locals are just getting on with their daily life, and Tucho and his staff are wonderful, especially Clarissa, who changed flights for us, booked Acrobat tickets, and helped us with restaurant suggestions and taxis. Unfortunately we had a few housekeeping issues which were a little frustrating. The shower holder was broken, so the shower head kept falling down. There was no cloth or detergent in the kitchen to wash or dry our dishes. Our breakfast left each day in the fridge was not consistent, never any eggs, no milk for cereal except a can of coconut milk once which we liked, so got more from the local store. One day there was only breakfast for 1, and another day bread with no spreads replaced in the little jars.
We worked around it, and rang for bread once, but were frankly too tired at the end of the day to bother anyone. Also watch out for the split level floor, as it can all look the same in a dimmed light! Apart from that, we still had a wonderful stay, with a most luxurious bed and doona much appreciated at the end of the day. It was great to be lent a local mobile phone, and always carry the Chai address card to show the taxi driver. Hope to return next year.

Room Tip: All rooms are beautifully decorated and with a view, so choose depending on size required and budget...

Excellent and unique location in a historical building where also a lot of local people live.
Great confort, great view, very well situated.

Shanghai is an amazing city and it is very interesting to stay in a building such as the Embankment Building. Heri, the owner of Chai Living bought several appartments in this building and restored them totaly in a very trendy way. He only selected appartments with a splendid view and the level of confort is very high. Heri and his team are very friendly and helpfull. A good suggestion is to on wednesday evening for dinner in the restaurant of Chai some houses further in the street. This the special evening there.

Just do it!

"WOW" where the first words that came out of our mouths when we stepped into our amazing "Chai Living" apartment. After walking thru the main entrance of the Embankment Building which is very old , then taking the rather rickety lift to your floor and making your way down the hallway passing the traditional chinese way of life you are not sure what to expect. The "Cocoon" apartment is absolutely amazing - the decor, design, state of the art appliances , not to mention the magnificent view, especially at night. You feel like you are "Mixing the Old Chinese with the New" when you enter this apartment. And the bed would have to be the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in - better than our own bed at home. The bathroom is something else - big square bath, his/hers own vanities and a "rain" shower plus a separate room that houses a toilet with all different buttons that do all sorts of things.
The breakfast supplied in your fridge every morning is more than you can eat - cereal, eggs, croissants/bread, juice , fruit .
Heri , the Chai Living manager, was very helpful and was always available if you needed anything - phoning for a taxi, restaurant suggestions, etc. You are given a cell phone on arrival and you can phone Heri if you need help.
We ate at Chai Bites a few times , which is located at the end of the building , very convenient.
The food is very delicious and reasonably priced. You also get a discount on the food/drink if you are staying at Chai Living.
We caught the subway everywhere and found it very easy to use. The subway station is less than a 10 minute walk away.
Chai Living met us at the airport , which we would recommend, and on the return , we caught a taxi to the Maglev Station. If you get a chance , take the very fast Maglev Train back to the airport (430km per hour) - great experience.
We` thoroughly enjoyed our time in Shanghai and staying at Chai Living made is extra special.
It was a unique experience and would highly recommend for anyone wanting something different to try Chai Living. Staying in a western hotel you would never experience anything like we did.
Fantastic!

Chai Living made our trip to Shanghai a memorable experience. We stayed in the Copper apartment which takes your breath away when you walk in the door both from the beautiful design of the apartment and the view of Pudong and the Bund. Chai also takes care of all your needs. We were met at the airport and driven into town. The staff are super friendly and try to help you in any way they can. The atmosphere and food at Chai Bites, the tapas bar right down the street from our apartment, was wonderful (the dumplings are especially great). After wandering around Shanghai all day, we often ended up at Chai Bites as a very special retreat. We especially appreciated that the apartment was not in a tourist section or insulated hotel. We could experience a part of Shanghai life that we never would have seen otherwise. Our apartment was on the ninth floor and as we walked down the hall we could see how our Chinese neighbors lived. They were all especially friendly and welcomed us.

Room Tip: All the rooms have great views. Some are larger than others so make sure you get the right fit for y...
