“Fawlty Langham Towers - wait until they fix up al the problems before you stay”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2009

The hotel has potential and the hardware of the beautiful deco building is very good...but the service is a comedy of errors. From waiting and waiting at check in (and check-out), while staff stood watching like wooden soldiers in the lobby, not offering to help; to the room service boy refusing to take my shoes to be shined (despite the offer of complimentary shoe shine service - a must after a day dodging building sites in Shanghai), saying "it's not my department." The whole hotel has this air: staff doing one job and one job only. Some of these may be teething problems - some personal items were misplaced when the hotel transferred my room (an upgrade), only to re-appear the next day when I raised this; maids "returned" a black dress to my room (I am a solo male traveller), then walked in on me starkers the following day (don't they knock?) - but there's no excuse for some staff not bothering to smile or say "good morning." Very inconsistent - some staff were great, others looked like they resented being there (and the guests encroaching on their space). Breakfast was very good, but overall, my advice is to give this place a LONG time to iron out more than just teething problems before considering. This is so different to other Langhams I have visited in terms of quality, efficiency, friendliness and staff attitude - and there was lots of attitude! Assistant manager listened to my tirades in a professional manner: by his own admission, he has a busy job ahead of him.

Management met up with guest during his stay, and appreciated very much his comments and feedback concerning the service challenges he encountered. As the hotel is still in "Soft Opening" Management will ensure the various points will result in continuous service improvements in order to improve service standards and therefore meeting guest expectations.

WOW...I have found my Shanghai address. I have tried and enjoyed a few of the very modern hotels in Shanghai this year. They were always interesting, but there never seemed to be the "soul" that I was looking for.

This hotel used to be a backpackers place. It has now been restored and renovated to be a beautiful luxury hotel. They seems to have taken the best of the historic building and mixed with modern touches. I felt like I was in Shanghai at the turn of the twentieth century.

My room was large and decorated with interesting touches. I really liked the little balconies though I think the little french doors were designed for locals and not for big American like me. The bathroom was huge. I think it twice the size of the one I have at home. My wife was jealous.

The staff are a bit scared of speaking English. I don't know why, they understood me and were very helpful. They just looked worried about the foreigner approaching them. Concierge was very helpful but in this small hotel, I seemed to be the only one around. I had lots of people offering to help me.

I will definitely be back on my next trip.

On a recent business trip to Shanghai, I took a risk and stayed at the just opened Langham off People's square in the heart of Shanghai. While I was concerned about staying a just opened hotel, it is obvious that they brought in management from their world class hotels around the world. Never was there one misstep.

My first impression of grandeur lasted the entire stay. The decor is lush and modern yet still maintains a strong asian influence. The hotel has managed to do what few other hotels can do: it has all the modern luxuries and style of a 5 star hotel yet you still know you are in the heart of a Chinese city. For example, they had a trio in the lobby softly playing Chinese classics.

The rooms are large and well appointed. The beds were especially comfy. The bathroom were large and had separate shower and bath. While the hotel seems small, it still has a significant spa with unique services. For a smaller hotel, it still had 3 spectacular restaurants, including one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city.

I strongly recommend this hotel if one is looking for a centrally located hotel that is significantly smaller and intimate than the big branded more sterile properties near by.

In the center of Shanghai with endless flow of people, there is a place that could take you back to the 1930s to appreciate the golden age of Shanghai. That is The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai. The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai, an Art Deco masterpiece infused with gold age of Shanghai, owns the superior geographical position. Located in the People's Square, centre of Shanghai, the hotel enjoys convenient access to all parts of the city with the Shanghai Metro Lines 1/2/8 less than 30 meters from the hotel. Moreover, the hotel is bordered by major cultural and entertainment highlights within walking distance, such as Nanjing Pedestrian Road, People's Park, the Raffles City, the Shanghai Museum, and the Shanghai Grand Theatre. This hotel attracts guests with its private and graceful environment instead of the splendid and magnificent impression. The stained glass dome looks so gorgeous with carved staircase winding up. The candlelit crystal lighting collocates with palatial valance creating the elegant and sumptuous atmosphere. The unique collections displayed on the wall of guest room floor corridors, such as jewelry boxes, manual-shaving-hair tools, ancient door latch, traditional pipes, ladies' hand bags, Hawksbill needles, cookie boxes, etc, all tell guests the history of Shanghai. Entering each room, the song " Rose, Rose, I love you" reminds each guest of the prosperity of the old Shanghai with its sweet voice and nostalgia melody. Standing on the guest room private balcony, you could feel the quick pace of the modern city while retrospect the past good times at the same time.Yangtze Hotel, the predecessor of The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai, opened in 1934, owns 80 years of history. Decorated with lavish art deco style, this hotel was touted as "The Third Largest Hotel in the Far East" by the renowned architect, Li Pan. This hotel used to be a popular social resort gathered many celebrities and movie stars, and it was exactly the birthplace of the most classic and well-known song "Rose, Rose, I love you". In order to inherit this cultural heritage, Yangtze Boutique reserves this song as the background music in the room, and names one suit of room as "Rose Suite" to be one of the signature of the hotel, which becomes the favorites of many guests. Over the past 80 years, the Yangtze Hotel witnessed the ups and downs of Shanghai. In 2009, the Yangtze Hotel was renovated gorgeously and re-emerged in a great sumptuous way, reserving the classic Art Deco design style while mixing the 1930s old Shanghai style together. Just like the time flying back, The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai guides guests back to the glamorous and extravagant life in old Shanghai with great charm and elegant demeanor. ... more   less
