New stylish hotel, room and bathroom are both nicely designed and spacious. We had steak and fried rice for in room dining on the first night which are quite ok although a bit pricey. Shower nob is already broken although hotel is so new. What is unacceptable is that we got a call from outside stranger (lady) on the room offerring my boyfriend a "massage" as the room is booked under his name. We complained that some insdier must have provided the guest list to outside for the operators to transferred the call h owever hotel manager denied and said it's impossible. We had breakfast there for 2 mornings and we had to sent back our Chinese tea both days and asked for Earl Gray instead as the Chinese tea tasted like nothing. Either they bought the wrong leaves or they had no idea how to make Chinese tea!!! Spa is NYC Mandarin hotel prices, so we didn't try it even with the 50% off for guests!! What is nice of them is that they did allow us to have a very late check out as our flights were in the evening.

LOCATION
- An easy walk to the shopping district in Shanghai
- There is a modern shopping mall just opposite the hotel

SERVICE & STAFF
- Lack in house keeping as it did not tidy up our room completely in the evening. It just did a bit of tidying here and there, I guess the easy stuff.
- We were told that we would be served complimentary drinks, hence requested for orange juice. A few min later, staff rang to say that there have run out of oj. I thought it's crappy excuse.

ROOM & CLEANLINESS
- Love the room; spacious, clean, new furniture, hugh single bed, clean sheets, iPod station,
- Love the bathroom; clean, spacious, TV mounted in front of the bath, fluffy towels and bathrobe
- Love the tea selections presented at the bar counter

RECOMMENDATION
- Love it... go pamper yourself

Being regular visitors to Shanghai, my wife and I have tried different 5-star hotels, but none so far could give us the quality service as we have experienced in The Langham, Yangtze Boutique.

We received the warmest welcome on arrival at the hotel entrance, which was followed by speedy and sincere service at the front desk. We have never thought of being escorted by a friendly hotel staff to our room after registration, while explaining the hotel details to us on the way. We were so delighted when welcome drinks and beautiful pink roses for decoration were brought to our room in just a few minutes.

During our 4-day stay in the hotel, we have enjoyed good rest and quality sleep in the beautifully furnished and well-equipped Shanghai Grand Room. We have enjoyed tasty dishes and refreshing beverages with excellent service and fine settigns in all the five dining outlets. We were also deeply impressed by the concierge's caring and patience to the hotel guests.

While immersing in the romance of 1930s Shanghai which were found in every corner of the hotel, we received personal care by each and every hotel staff of all positions, without intrusion to our privacy.

If we were meant to be picky, we would suggest an improvement of the drainage in the shower. However, I suppose this should be a problem for most historical buildings and would not be difficult to solve.

Once again, we would like to show our appreciation to all the staff in The Langham, Yangtze Boutique.

The hotel has potential and the hardware of the beautiful deco building is very good...but the service is a comedy of errors. From waiting and waiting at check in (and check-out), while staff stood watching like wooden soldiers in the lobby, not offering to help; to the room service boy refusing to take my shoes to be shined (despite the offer of complimentary shoe shine service - a must after a day dodging building sites in Shanghai), saying "it's not my department." The whole hotel has this air: staff doing one job and one job only. Some of these may be teething problems - some personal items were misplaced when the hotel transferred my room (an upgrade), only to re-appear the next day when I raised this; maids "returned" a black dress to my room (I am a solo male traveller), then walked in on me starkers the following day (don't they knock?) - but there's no excuse for some staff not bothering to smile or say "good morning." Very inconsistent - some staff were great, others looked like they resented being there (and the guests encroaching on their space). Breakfast was very good, but overall, my advice is to give this place a LONG time to iron out more than just teething problems before considering. This is so different to other Langhams I have visited in terms of quality, efficiency, friendliness and staff attitude - and there was lots of attitude! Assistant manager listened to my tirades in a professional manner: by his own admission, he has a busy job ahead of him.

RD64, Management at The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai, responded to this review, 7 July 2009
Management met up with guest during his stay, and appreciated very much his comments and feedback concerning the service challenges he encountered. As the hotel is still in "Soft Opening" Management will ensure the various points will result in continuous service improvements in order to improve service standards and therefore meeting guest expectations.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In the center of Shanghai with endless flow of people, there is a place that could take you back to the 1930s to appreciate the golden age of Shanghai. That is The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai. The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai, an Art Deco masterpiece infused with gold age of Shanghai, owns the superior geographical position. Located in the People's Square, centre of Shanghai, the hotel enjoys convenient access to all parts of the city with the Shanghai Metro Lines 1/2/8 less than 30 meters from the hotel. Moreover, the hotel is bordered by major cultural and entertainment highlights within walking distance, such as Nanjing Pedestrian Road, People's Park, the Raffles City, the Shanghai Museum, and the Shanghai Grand Theatre. This hotel attracts guests with its private and graceful environment instead of the splendid and magnificent impression. The stained glass dome looks so gorgeous with carved staircase winding up. The candlelit crystal lighting collocates with palatial valance creating the elegant and sumptuous atmosphere. The unique collections displayed on the wall of guest room floor corridors, such as jewelry boxes, manual-shaving-hair tools, ancient door latch, traditional pipes, ladies' hand bags, Hawksbill needles, cookie boxes, etc, all tell guests the history of Shanghai. Entering each room, the song " Rose, Rose, I love you" reminds each guest of the prosperity of the old Shanghai with its sweet voice and nostalgia melody. Standing on the guest room private balcony, you could feel the quick pace of the modern city while retrospect the past good times at the same time.Yangtze Hotel, the predecessor of The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai, opened in 1934, owns 80 years of history. Decorated with lavish art deco style, this hotel was touted as "The Third Largest Hotel in the Far East" by the renowned architect, Li Pan. This hotel used to be a popular social resort gathered many celebrities and movie stars, and it was exactly the birthplace of the most classic and well-known song "Rose, Rose, I love you". In order to inherit this cultural heritage, Yangtze Boutique reserves this song as the background music in the room, and names one suit of room as "Rose Suite" to be one of the signature of the hotel, which becomes the favorites of many guests. Over the past 80 years, the Yangtze Hotel witnessed the ups and downs of Shanghai. In 2009, the Yangtze Hotel was renovated gorgeously and re-emerged in a great sumptuous way, reserving the classic Art Deco design style while mixing the 1930s old Shanghai style together. Just like the time flying back, The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai guides guests back to the glamorous and extravagant life in old Shanghai with great charm and elegant demeanor. ... more   less
