“Perfect location, everyting you would expect from a Langham hotel”
Reviewed 26 August 2010

Very welcoming staff even when travelling with a baby (toy was given as welcome gift) as this hotel seems to cater mainly to business travelers. The location at the foot of Raffles City mall and People's square metro station is ideal. I would certainly come back and recommend it to my friends.

This hotel is quite wonderful, from it's central location, to being a historical building, walking distance to shopping are ask restaurants, the Bund, and a lot more. But then there's the food, very disappointing, and that's from breakfast down to room service.
Of course there are so many great and extremely reasonable places to eat in Shangahi, however, when you get off a plane after 20+ hours, or when you come back from a 10-hour day, the last thing I want to do is go out looking for a place to eat in a foreign country. But that's me. In any case, the room service choice were very limiting, focused mostly on western fares, and the 24 hour selections are exclusively western.
As with one meal ghat I ordered for dinner in late, they fogot the sauce on the shrimp...
And lastly, the buffet is subpar, at best. Especially considering it's not included in the room rate.
With about said, the hotel is absolutely wonderful, just don't order the food, or expect anything form it.
Oh, and the bathtub, wow! You'll love it!

S me.

Take a look at the photos of the hotel on its web site. It really is that beautiful. The room is equally retro-charming and the bathroom is huge (but a bit under-lit). Adding to the beauty of the hotel is its location just a block away from the Nanjing pedestrian street. A couple of things about the hotel were not top-tier: the lift is a bit too claustrophobic and the breakfast offers very few choices. Service was overall okay, but not yet at 5-star level.

The breakfast room is actually an Italian restaurant serving lunch and dinner. I've read good reviews of it in local publications. Unfortunately, I have yet to try it.

I considered the Langham to be an excellent value because I booked a 2-night promotional deal on the hotel's web site, which ended up in the neighborhood of $150/night. Admittedly, my stay was last December.

This great hotel feels totally new. The decor in the lobby is very done, even a bit over the top, but beautiful and fun. The hallways and rooms are stunning. We stayed in a Shanghai Grand room, which was beautiful and had a small balcony and huge and stunning bathroom. The spa is beautiful (although expensive for Chinese standards) and offers use of their jacuzzi and steam rooms free for guests. The breakfast is not included and is pricey, although very good. The location is not super close to any one area (closest is the Bund, a 20 min walk) but is central to all areas and right across the street from a major subway station (we loved taking the subway in Shanghai - it was very clean and easy for an English speaker and much faster than taking taxis). Highly recommend hotel.

The room was spacious, very clean and well-maintained. The art deco design was very tastefully done. The bathroom was larger than most other 5 star hotels I've stayed in and very well appointed with complete amenities, luxurious over-sized towels, and they even included a high-powered salon style hair dryer. The staff was courteous, friendly and very helpful, especially the doormen. They were always on hand to help us hail a cab, get in and out of vehicles, clarify directions, offer umbrellas when it rained and even recommended local eating places. The breakfast buffet was excellent. The selection was not as broad as a big chain hotel but the selection, quality and freshness of everything that was served was perfect. The coffee was great too.

The only downside to our 5 day stay was that the air-conditioner was only blowing warm air. I've experienced this in the past when traveling during the colder months, the aircon's cooling function is switched off. This made the room quite stuffy and a little too warm at night. Luckily our room had a terrace, so we could easily & safely keep the windows opened. By doing so, a more optimal temperature was obtained within the room.

In the center of Shanghai with endless flow of people, there is a place that could take you back to the 1930s to appreciate the golden age of Shanghai. That is The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai. The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai, an Art Deco masterpiece infused with gold age of Shanghai, owns the superior geographical position. Located in the People's Square, centre of Shanghai, the hotel enjoys convenient access to all parts of the city with the Shanghai Metro Lines 1/2/8 less than 30 meters from the hotel. Moreover, the hotel is bordered by major cultural and entertainment highlights within walking distance, such as Nanjing Pedestrian Road, People's Park, the Raffles City, the Shanghai Museum, and the Shanghai Grand Theatre. This hotel attracts guests with its private and graceful environment instead of the splendid and magnificent impression. The stained glass dome looks so gorgeous with carved staircase winding up. The candlelit crystal lighting collocates with palatial valance creating the elegant and sumptuous atmosphere. The unique collections displayed on the wall of guest room floor corridors, such as jewelry boxes, manual-shaving-hair tools, ancient door latch, traditional pipes, ladies' hand bags, Hawksbill needles, cookie boxes, etc, all tell guests the history of Shanghai. Entering each room, the song " Rose, Rose, I love you" reminds each guest of the prosperity of the old Shanghai with its sweet voice and nostalgia melody. Standing on the guest room private balcony, you could feel the quick pace of the modern city while retrospect the past good times at the same time.Yangtze Hotel, the predecessor of The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai, opened in 1934, owns 80 years of history. Decorated with lavish art deco style, this hotel was touted as "The Third Largest Hotel in the Far East" by the renowned architect, Li Pan. This hotel used to be a popular social resort gathered many celebrities and movie stars, and it was exactly the birthplace of the most classic and well-known song "Rose, Rose, I love you". In order to inherit this cultural heritage, Yangtze Boutique reserves this song as the background music in the room, and names one suit of room as "Rose Suite" to be one of the signature of the hotel, which becomes the favorites of many guests. Over the past 80 years, the Yangtze Hotel witnessed the ups and downs of Shanghai. In 2009, the Yangtze Hotel was renovated gorgeously and re-emerged in a great sumptuous way, reserving the classic Art Deco design style while mixing the 1930s old Shanghai style together. Just like the time flying back, The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai guides guests back to the glamorous and extravagant life in old Shanghai with great charm and elegant demeanor. ... more   less
