“A list of grievances”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2014

I'll get straight to the point. I don't recommend the Ocean Hotel in Shanghai and I would never stay here again. Here are the reasons why:
1. No in room wifi.
2. Lobby wifi requires that you enter a code every single time you disconnect and want to reconnect again.
3. Yoghurt at breakfast buffet was not on ice, and at room temperature.
4. The pool has been shut down since Nov. 2013.
5. Gym doesn't open until 10am... when you are on vacation, you're out on tours or doing sights mid day... it needs needs be open early or 24-hrs.
6. No fitted sheet, flat sheet is barely tucked in, no top sheet.
7. Smelly room and hallway (on 16th floor at least).
8. Only provides shampoo/shower gel in one (low quality).
9. Large rooms but they are terribly laid out.
10. Overall, this hotel is old and desperately needs updating.

This was our last hotel, and our favorite! The rooms are huge! Very clean and modern. The glass wall and door on the bathroom might be a problem for some people( although I read after our stay there is a curtain, I did not see one in our room). The breakfast had a wide variety of foods and had the first decent coffee of our trip. Skip the revolving restaurant on top of the hotel, moves extremely slow, views aren't great, service moved at a snails pace, saved all of our dishes separately, and 20 minutes apart! We each had to eat alone, as we did not order dishes to share! If going to the Bund, take a cab! We walked and definitely regretted it. Cabs are easy to get and are so cheap, the walk to the Bund is not scenic so save your energy for other things!

Well staffed hotel with good service! Room no 718 half of the view blocked by a wall...but surprise! This is the first hotel I have stayed in with an inside window to the bathroom. You can watch your room mate having a bath or using the toilet (found out later that there is a curtain inside bathroom so one can have a Little discretion) but first impression was of a thai massage parlor. Breakfast restaurant badly organized. Plates in heaters are not connected, cold and located far from food stand. Cold cuts had curled up - so probably recycled from yesterdays serving. Toast slices too thick to enter toaster....e.g breakfast setup and management in need of improvement. Hotel restaurant on second floor, prices reasonable however communication with staff limited to pointing at pictures in menu as staffs knowledge of English is down to a few words. There is also a revolving restaurant on the top of the hotel.
Hotel is located in a residential area with very limited activity approx. 40 min, walk from the Bund.
Stayed 5 nights as a part of a tour. Free WIfi in lobby only.

The hotel is a victim of new high- rises built in front that obstruct the view of the river and the Bund. The revolving restaurant on the top moves very slowly the food is better in the lobby. Staff was very attentive, changing currency and giving directions. Location was near new 12 train station. The pool is still closed. Probably would stay here again if the price is right giving the proximity to the train.

Please don't stay at this hotel - they run a scam where they incorrectly charge you for items on your room. They accused us of stealing a clothes brush and tried to charge us 500 yuan for it (£50!) when we never had one in the room to start with. They were exceptionally persistent, shouting at us in Chinese. They obviously do it regularly as on a previous night in the hotel we saw someone else disputing a lost shoe horn and there are other reviews below stating similar issues.

The hotel isn't nice enough to stay here despite this service, it's far out. It's a 45 minute walk to the bund. Please stay elsewhere or if you do stay make sure you're covered, take photos etc to prove what is in the room.

For a country vouching to bring themselves in ten years time to a global tourist destination, this hotel is not an example of what they want to advertise.

Ocean Hotel is a bad experience, not living up the hype on their various websites. Sure the establishment looks fine and glossy and a bit modern, but behind the scenes there must be nothing but discourse. Staff do not speak English, and I mean from front desk to maids. Housekeeping is an excuse for two people to whip around the room, no vacuuming, they change the towels and are gone in less than five minutes. The staff are obtuse and there isn't a senior staff of management/i.e. decision making in sight. The food is very ordinary, and hot dishes are cold. Wait staff don't speak any English, and we've taken a crash course in basic Chinese just to get coffee.

For a hotel with so much potential, they need front of house senior staff who can make decisions, speak English and put this hotel in a better light.

This hotel promises a lot but delivers little. Most negative part is its location as it is located far away from the city centre, markets and even nearest metro station Dalian Road at a distance of more than a kilometer. Therefore while making a booking following aspects should be kept in mind especially when you plan to visit the city for leisure and shopping. It is always better to look for better accessible locations nearby the tourist attractions etc. rather than the price. You ultimately end up spending more time and money while commuting to diferent parts of the city during your entire trip. The breakfast is very limited affair especially for a vegetarian like me. The rooms are Ok nothing special to write about. Next time I would not stay this hotel.
