“Huge rooms, great value in the French Concession”
Reviewed 9 May 2014

Stayed here for three nights in December after stumbling across a special rate by chance, and it turned out to be a great place to stay!

The room was absolutely massive - huge desk, full sofa, a flatscreen TV that could be rotated to face either the sofa or the bed in the next room. There was more than enough space and the furnishings gave it a hint of classic luxury.

The location is great, located close to the Hengshan Road Metro Station and a short walk from Xujiahui.

There was an issue with the plumbing for the clawfoot tub in the room, but the shower was spacious and fulfilled all of my needs. There is no door separating the toilet from the rest of the suite, it is located past a sharp turn at the end of the corridor... didn't bother me at all but might be an issue for more self-conscious guests.

The building - originally Cavendish Court built in 1933 - is a semi-hidden gem. The original entrance doors and original floor in the reception are lovely and the staircase has a real sweep of modernism. Each room has a spin on either Deco or turn of century style, but the ersatz nature of each is looking a little tired and the entrance hallways need a refresh. The rooms are a great size, the bathrooms are wonderful and the beds sublime - I slept so well. Breakfasts are fine, but can be a little crowded - the cooked to order egg chef is great! Reception staff pleasant and helpful. A little money spent on refreshing the hallways, breakfast room and reception areas would be well spent and raise the profile of the hotel.

This is a lovely old building, the art deco doors that greet you are gorgeous, especially at night. The receptionists were friendly, helpful and spoke good English when we checked in. It's also very close to a subway station & easy to reach. Even though the room was spacious and well laid out & decorated, I spotted: long black hairs all over the room; there was a layer of dust on the bathroom counter; a red wine bottle stain (the ring at the bottom of the bottle) on the bathroom floor; the plastic wrapper and silver paper from cigarette boxes here, there and everywhere. The padded footstool/coffee table as well as the bench in front of the bed is badly stained and it gives such a lovely room a very dirty and tacky feeling. The next morning when I opened the curtains I also noticed that there were actual dirt (sand, crumbly bits) around the wall, under where the curtain hangs when it's shut. The next day, after the room had been cleaned, I checked on the red wine bottle stain, but it was still there - although now the rubbish bin was moved on top of it, to hide it. After a long day's sightseeing, I decided to soak in a bath, only to discover a heap of cigarette ash on the windowsill! The windows can't be opened, which I assume is what the previous occupier was hoping for (when already in the tub). I expected the cleaners to notice it after having to clean the bath after use, but it was still there and remained there until we left. That is very bad. Also noticed that there's no full length mirror in the room, which is always appreciated, also no hair dryer. The breakfast also leaves a lot to be desired. Not much of a selection in general, but especially if you have a food allergy of which you informed the hotel upon making the booking.
At least the bed was clean and very comfy and we slept well. Although there's a karaoke bar nearby and we heard them 'singing' until late into the night. Also, the shower was great, nice & big shower-head.
My honest opinion: rather go somewhere else.

I stayed here back in November and had a nice stay (even though we had some issues with our booking). So I decided to stay again it was lovely.

The room was 306 and it was a fantastic room. The only comment I have with the room is they should provide nice bedside lamps. They only had overhead lamps, which weren't really nice when one of us was reading and the other was trying to sleep. We had a comfortable sleep and stay there. The staff were once again, very lovely and warm. They were helpful and took care of us, giving us tips for the area.
The breakfast was great! Loved that they had the coffee machine. They also served a delicious kipper, some cheese and very good bread.

I have recommended this hotel to so many people because of its location, value for money rooms, and friendly staff (also the coffee machine!!).

Each suite was spacious and beautifully decorated. The staff were helpful and offered great customer service. Our first night our room was right above/next to the bar connected to the hotel and the Karaoke was loud. When I called down to see if there were any other rooms available the hotel staff informed us there were not but that we could move first thing in the morning. They also asked the bar to turn down the volume which did help a bit. In the morning they moved us promptly to a room higher up and away from the noise. The hotel had a great breakfast and it was located a short walk from the subway. Overall great value. We really enjoyed our stay.

I will definitely stay at this hotel again and I will recommend it to my friends. The location couldn't be better... in the French Concession area. Line 1, Hengshan Rd Station. Just 4 stops from People's Square station. I also stayed at a hotel in near Peoples Square for a few days, and I can honestly say, this location was better. In Shanghai, I couldn't find anything more lovely than the French Concession, with it's tree-lined streets, mansions, independent cafés, and boutique shops.

Aside from my obsession with the neighborhood, the room was great. Very large and comfortable. A TV that could flip from the bedroom to the living room, AC/heat that could be adjusted accordingly from room to room with a remote control. Claw-foot bathtub. Fast and free wifi access. ... Etc etc.

I read a few other reviews that complained of nosiness, and I didn't experience that. My room was quiet...a city view on the 6th floor. I never heard any noise from neighboring rooms, but I did hear a little bit of street sounds, although it seemed quite standard for a busy city.

Line 1, Hengshan Rd Station, exit 1.
Walk west on Hengshan Rd for about 5 minutes. The hotel entryway is on the left and visible from the street. If you pass Keven Cafe, you've gone too far.

The room is huge and nicely designed. Room design is using open concept, there's a shower place that's covered but the bath tub is exposed. Hence, it'll be quite cold if you bath in the tub during winter. The breakfast was ok, not many choices but western style can never go wrong. We went during winter and the heater in the room was not working well, so it became quite cold at night. Really love the location of this hotel, about 10 min walk to the nearest MRT station and the surrounding areas are very quiet and cozy. The front desk is also very helpful and can speak good English as there are many foreigners staying there.
