“Opulence At Its Best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 May 2014

I stayed at The Peninsula In Shanghai on Aug 2013. This hotel was elegant, modern, and luxurious. I was in a suite that was the size of a one bedroom apartment and with decor that rivals any high end interior design publication. I understand that the Peninsula Hotels have been decorated a by a world famous French designer. The suite boasted an art deco dressing area with very spacious bathroom, a full size living room with interacive flat screen, bar and desk, and king size bedroom. The suite was swathed in luxurious carpets and wall coverings that imbued a Zen like atmosphere.

The rooftop bar overlooking The Bund is a once in a lifetime experience. The hotel situated on the river that divides colonial Shanghai from modern Shanghai offers sweeping views of the city. The iconic Pearl Tower serves as the backdrop along with all the other landmarks and buildings. At night the views are breathtaking with all the buildings twinkling and the boats in blue neon parading up and down the river. A must see!!

The service in the hotel is perfection at its best.

Dear Virginia C,
Thank you very much for your lovely review of The Peninsula Shanghai. I am delighted to learn how much you enjoyed the physical facilities, which as you say, are elegant and luxurious. The interior design of the hotel is by French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, who was able to encapsulate the Art Deco style of Shanghai in to the hotel while at the same time ensuring that our spectacular views were fully extenuated. Thank you also for your comments about the service levels in the hotel, our team strives to provide a memorable experience for each of our guests.

I look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Kind regards,

When we checked in, we were surprised to find we had been upgraded to a suite! And what a suite! The rooms went on and on, from the living room with a fireplace and the most amazing view across the river, especially at night when all the buildings are lit up in multicoloured lights; to the bedroom with an emperor-sized bed; to two dressing areas, including a nail dryer; to the two bathrooms. Best shower I ever used. I was concerned about noise as we overlooked the Bund, but that was never an issue. Turndown service seemed to involve cleaning the room for the second time, and replenishing the fresh fruit in the room. Breakfast was included in our rate. Best breakfast we had in China. You order hot food from the menu, while cold food is available on the buffet. Everything we had was delicious, from Eggs Benedict to oatmeal to banana pancakes and cappuccinos. The other meals we ate in the hotel did not compare to breakfast, including tea. I cannot imagine a hotel room or experience that could match this one. Thank you to the very helpful Peninsula staff.

Dear TorontoEh
Thank you for your wonderful review of The Peninsula Shanghai! I am happy to know how much you enjoyed your stay with us and that you were able to make the most of the upgrade. Our breakfast offering is extensive, offering the Continental buffet and hot items prepared to order, we feel this option provides the freshest food to our guests rather than a buffet- I am glad that you concur.

Please come and visit us again soon.

We stayed in the hotel as a family of 4 over the Easter break. We used the hotel promotion on suites and booked two interconnected suites overlooking the river. On checking in we were offered a free upgrade of one of the rooms to grand deluxe river suite, which we've gladly accepted. The rooms were perfect. Elegant, very spacious, comfortable, beautifully designed and full of high-tech features. Best river view out of all hotels on the Bund that we've tried. Dinner at El Willy was very good. We ordered Chef's menu with the wine pairing, suggested by Sommelier. It all went beautifully together.
Add to all this highly professional and efficient staff and you get a perfect stay.

I have stayed at the Peninsula Shanghai many times since it opened in 2009 and I think it's the best hotel in Shanghai. The location is second to none and the guest rooms are very well appointed in the traditional Peninsula style. What I like best is the built in iPod dock and internet radio unlike most hotels which only provide a flimsy docking station. Most convenient. You can also stream videos using your iPod or iPad and watch them on the big screen TV.
Another very useful feature in the room is their VOIP phone which allows guests unlimited overseas calls-totally free of charge.Service is also top class and the room is full of amenities

Room Tip: The 03 facings rooms on the higher levels offers panoramic views of the Huangpu river & a partia...

Dear Motoda,
Thank you for your review of The Peninsula Shanghai, I am truly delighted to read all of your comments. In-room technology is something our company pays close attention to in making sure it is intelligently integrated in to the guest experience, I am glad you agree that this is the case. The VOIP phones are a great addition and something we get frequent positive feedback about since they can save many hundreds of dollars in charges. I look forward to welcoming you back soon, please do let me know when you shall be returning (garethroberts@peninsula.com).

A truly lovely hotel. Our river view room was exquisite, everything had the "wow" factor and the 3 nights we stayed wasn't nearly long enough. I can't think of anything we didn't like. The staff are friendly and attentive and anxious to please, you can see that staff training is taken very seriously.
The location is excellent, walk out of the door and you are on The Bund. I could go on, but I suggest you go and experience the hotel and its facilities yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: The river view rooms are very nice.

The quality of the fit out and amenities in our river view room, has to be the best we have experienced through our travels, in comparable standard hotels.
The mood lighting, electric blind and sheer curtains, the excellent quality in the furniture, drapes, dressing room, made our stay very enjoyable, while overlooking the spectacular skyline, simply stunning. The detail surrounding recessed ceiling bulkheads, concealed lighting, excellent..
However, there is no waiting space in the lobby, down the passage way to reception around the corner, made waiting for our guide, stand up room only, as insufficient space available.
The lobby lounge, busy with people having meals or high tea, detracted from the ambience of entering a luxury hotel, where open space and stunning decor is always welcoming.
The service at breakfast time could have been improved upon. An abundance of staff standing around waiting to clear dishes, could have been of better use in the kitchen.

Room Tip: River view room as a minimum, the river view suites must be so luxurious..

This is my first time to visit Peninsula in Shanghai. I cam here with expectation of Hong Kong Peninsula level of sevice. Of course the facilities and atmosphere is Peninsula but I am disappointed with service. When I got off from taxi, the doorman didn't open the taxi door neither greet the guest even though he did nothing. I had tea and dessert in the lobby lounge but all staff here looked just busy themselves. Most staff looked like part timer and seemed to have no idea what they should do. I could see that only one male staff did what to do. Others? Including female supervisor level staff was not attentive to real guest since she looked busy for giving direction to her staff. When giving direction or having conversation they were.very free to speak loud each other. It didn't match with classic music they played. It is definitely different from Hong Kong original. I don't know about room but lobby lounge which breakfast is served is not Peninsula level.
