My husband and I stayed at the Peninsula Shanghai for our ten year anniversary celebration. We have stayed at the Peninsula Bangkok and the Peninsula Beijing and would have to rate this as the best, in fact it might be the best Hotel we have stayed at period.
Previous reviews have described the rooms, lobby, location etc but I thought I would comment on how the Peninsula helped make our anniversary special and luxurious. Included in our rate we had airport transfers which meant that we were greeted at the arrivals hall of the airport by a very courteous and helpful attendant. As per the other comments it wasn't a Rolls Royce but for this price and room selection I'm not surprised. It was a perfectly respectable Mercedes however (although I advise against putting a pamphlet advertising the Marriott Hotel in the seat pocket). We were upgraded to a Deluxe room with a partial view of the bund with all the mod cons - loved the bed, automatic block-out blinds and FREE internet and international calls, especially. There was a fruit basket (which was replenished once during our three night stay) and a complimentary bottle of champagne (their own brand which is very, very good) as it was our anniversary. The check-in staff take you to your room and check you in while introducing you to your room which is a nice personal touch. There is a turn down service (who cares if there's no chocolates!) and on the first night a cheesecake with 'Happy Anniversary' was left for us.
We visited the spectacular pool but didn't use it. Sir Elly's bar has a spectacular view of the bund (forget traipsing over to Cloud 9) and the Compass Bar is very cool decor wise but the live band was catering to a slightly older crowd (great singers though). The Compass Bar also offers free chocolates and nuts.
We asked the concierge to book a restaurant for us which was no problem and they left a note confirming it was done (Fu 1088 is a fantastic restaurant, by the way). We also asked on two days that room service provide a champagne bucket to chill the champagne we had bought with us before we got back to the Hotel so it was chilled to drink before we went out again - it was no problem.
The doormen take the number of the taxi you take for extra security and they are very professional and enjoy chatting and practicing their English. I definitely agree with another reviewer to take a Hotel card to give to taxi drivers as it has the address in Chinese on it and I don't think they would know where to go without it (we had no problems with taxi's as we always had directions written in Chinese - the concierge will do this for you if you don't have it).
Breakfast was buffet style at the weekend and al la carte on weekdays. The breakfast was included in our rate and was a nice selection. The waiters and service was a little sporadic but this is their soft opening and this may just be teething problems.
Overall, a fantastic stay! We hope to return and enjoy their supreme hospitality in the future. Thank you for making our special celebration so memorable Peninsula Shanghai!
