This hotel is quite cheap - so if cheap is what you are looking for then this is the place. It costs about £35 a night bed and breakfast although the breakfast is poor quality and the bedrooms are basic. It is clean although make sure you ask for a non smoking room as they allow smoking in some and the rooms smell badly of cigarettes. There is no bar or communal area ( although we did meet in the breakfast room one evening and brought drinks in from the local shop).

Room Tip: Remember to request a non smoking room if you don't smoke.

As you enter to the lobby the first thing you see is a ping-pong table, parked bicycles and groceries (instant noodles, water, juice, etc) sold at the front desk - all prices written on a pink paper with black marker (how tasteless!). While waiting to check-in we had to listen to karaoke singing of not so talented individuals - the door to the KTV, which is in the lobby, was mostly open and staff didn't even bother asking to close it.
Rooms were mostly clean (not counting stains on the carpeting) and the view was quite nice.
The main problem was that there were people singing karaoke till exactly 2:30am, in our room we could hear everything and my friend couldn't fall asleep until they finished.
Then we were woken up at 7:30am by the sound of several lawn-mowers. Definitely not how I imagined spending the morning of a Sunday.
Breakfast buffet was a joke - no scrambled eggs, no ham, only lukewarm(!) milk for the cereal.
Overall this Holiday Inn is a disaster and it's a great example for hotel management students of how NOT to run a hotel.

Stayed here one night in august 2011. Located on brand new land at the very mouth of the Yangtze, some 30km from the shanghai metropolis. This is the only building on the land that has formed in the past six years through controlled sedimentation of the gigantic river mouth. This is a place of huge openness, surrounded by wetlands, reedbeds and lovely morning walks along the dyke experiencing the mist-shrouded estuary of the mighty Yangtze.

This is a quaint location for those seeking to escape the savagery of shanghai. Next to the hotel is a giant stainless-steel sculpture of a whale, remembering several years ago when a whale was stranded here.

Choose the rooms facing the river, and stay away from the lobby in the evenings, when a small adjoining room emits sounds to hurt you deeply… they call it a karaoke. The restaurant is on the 6th floor, with sweeping views of the surroundings. Alas, the food in average in taste and choice.

Room Tip: choose rooms facing the river

We just returned from the Holiday Inn Express Shanghai Nanhuizui. We enjoyed the look of the hotel and the rooms were very comfortable. However, the service was absolutely appalling. After numerous arguments with the front desk staff, and after I calmly discussed my complaints with the hotel manager, I now have no other option but to complain to Holiday Inn directly.

It was embarrassing how terrible the service was. It all started when I needed some ice for my drink. I am accustomed to having ice machines in Holiday Inns, so I was quite baffled when there was not one to be found. Every time I needed ice, I had to physically go to the front desk and request it. The next problem was the breakfast buffet. In the room, it clearly stated that the buffet was open from 6-11am. Yet, when my wife and I arrived there one day at about 7:30, they had decided to stop bringing out any more food. All we were left with were the dregs in the bottom of the bowls. Furthermore, the waiters were all just standing around, even though almost every table had dishes that needed to be cleared. Even more insultingly, one waitress cleared adjacent tables to ours while there were still dirty dishes lying right in front of us!

The next problem was that numerous requests just went unanswered or ignored. As clearly stated in the hotel bathroom, toiletries were available if a guest forgot something. I needed a razor, so I called the number given on the sign. The person that responded to the call was extremely rude, in the first place. In the second place, my promised razor never arrived, so I eventually walked down to the front desk. After waiting several minutes for the worker to finish her phone conversation (??), I finally coerced a razor out of her.

The transportation issues were even worse. On the website it states that “the hotel is a 50 minutes drive to the downtown area, 30 minutes to Pu Dong International Airport”. Firstly, these distances are not accurate at all. It takes much longer to reach these areas. Secondly, while there is a bus stop fairly near the hotel, there is no shuttle service to and from the bus stop. We were charged an extra 25 yuan per day just for the ‘driver’ to take us 5 minutes down the road (and that service was only available after 9am, which was much too late). Due to the lack of a shuttle service, the only feasible way to get anywhere was by taxi, which soon became an expensive proposition.

What was probably the last straw occurred right as we were about to leave the hotel on the last day. My wife had asked for a taxi to come and pick us up at 10am. Not only was there no taxi at 10am, we were also informed that it was going to cost 300 yuan! I refused to pay that money and we then took another private taxi, which cost exactly 104 yuan. Not only were they clearly trying to rip us off, the timing was in extremely poor taste too. At about 9:30am, I had been complaining to the manager about the generally terrible level of service. While he did acknowledge my complaints, we not only received no compensation, but they immediately tried to rip us off again!

While I understand that perhaps this hotel is being marketed to Chinese tour groups and not to foreigners, it was very disappointing. The whole reason we chose to spend extra money and stay in a Holiday Inn was because we thought the level of service would be of an international standard. After this experience, it will be a very long time until I stay in another Holiday Inn or recommend one to my friends.
