Reviewed 12 May 2014

We have just returned home after 10 day trip to China and our first 4 enjoyable days and nights we spent in Indigo Hotel.
In case someone likes this review and will read our other reviews of hotels and restaurants during this trip please note that we visited every place with our 10 year old daughter.

Of course, many thanks to all fellow reviewers on Tripadvisor, who provided us with a lot of valuable tips and advices!

We arrived quite early, at 8:30 am (it took us 45 min to get there from Pudong airport and cost RMB 170, which is less than $30) and were sure that we would have to store our luggage before our room is ready. But surprisingly room was available! It was Deluxe Old Town view room 1705 for two, but queen beds were wide enough to comfortably accomodate three of us. Great pillows. Both bedroom and bathroom (with both rain shower and bath with TV) were spacious and convenient. Unusual high end toilet system requires some time to understand how to use it. But then one has a lot of fun.

Indigo is a designer kind of hotel and sometimes design interferes comfort. Not here! We liked everything in our room, lobby and restaurants. Old Town view did not disappoint us at all. We would ruther say that now it gives a unique opportunity to see disappearing old streets of Shanghai. And as breakfast area, swimming pool and Char bar and restaurant offer killer view of Pudong and Bund only, it is may be an advantage to have different view from your room. Yes, construction in front of the window is not pretty, but we did not hear any noise.

From the first minute in Indigo we felt great. Room was ready, reception staff was more than kind and helpful, luggage was delivered before we could enter the room and a bottle of very good French wine with a hand written welcome card from General manager awaited. Later Jackson Zhou, assistant front manager, sent another bottle to us... He helped us to check in for domestic flight to Hainan three days later also. Another great manager, Mr. Leon Lu, was extremely attentive to our needs. Numerous small issues were addressed, different reservations were confirmed or done, privat trip to pleasant canal town of Zhujiajiao was organised. And we should mention here that Leon found the most reasonable price for that tour and saved a lot of our money. Thank you again, gentlemen!
Honestly, we can remember only one of Relais & Chateaux hotels in Switzerland where roughly 10 years ago we got such a service.
Location is perfect in our opinion. Hotel is just on the southern end of a "new", prolonged Bund and very close to Old town and Yugarden. We mean walking distance.

Great breakfast! If it is in your room rate you can use an extensive buffet and order one of their menu meals free. Omelet with your choice of anything is highly recommended! Unlimited fresh coffee.

All in all Indigo impressed us a lot. Excellent hotel. Once in Shanghai again we will stay there.

Greetings Irina94 from Prague,

From one beautiful city to another - I was so pleased to read your wonderfully detailed review on TripAdvisor of your recent stay with us and time in Shanghai.

As a seasoned traveler it is clear that you know what you like and what it takes to execute and thus happy to hear how you enjoy both the style and amenities found through out the hotel.

It was particularly kind of you to mention two of the hotel's super stars Jackson and Leon who both so epitomize the very definition of inspired and passionate service. I will make sure that they are also recognized for same.

Please do reach out to me upon your return to Shanghai as we would love to treat you to another excellent stay with hotel Indigo and have a chance to meet in person -

So why did we chose to stay here? Well, it's on the bund and the interior design looked cool.

It's only worth it to stay on the bund if you get a nice view of the famous buildings on the other side of it. So we paid extra to do so, "river view" they said. We didn't get what we paid for.. We got a view of a construction site (with the noise that goes with it). When we complained, indigo hotel staff told us there was nothing they could do since we booked through an agent. Talk about bad service!

The hotel is terribly located in the middle of constructions. There are no nearby restaurants, no convenience stores and about 1 km to nearest subway station.

Room quality? Well, the shower fixture is no longer wall mounted and if you try to switch nozzle, water sprays everywhere. The light in the bathroom blinks and makes a noise, does not feel safe :|

Sure, the interior design looks cool, good job. But over all this hotel is not worth the money.

Dear sj_someone

I wish to begin by sincerely apologizing for your hotel experience to have fallen so short of your expectation and that our front desk host set into motion a series of disappointments which could have easily been avoided had we been more in tune with your needs.

As the hotel in fact has four river view categories each with a successively higher rate ie the South Facing River View room does in fact look over the current construction and extension of the Bund Board Walk towards the cool docks. However the hotel also offers rooms which face east with the river and then Pudong and its amazing sky line right before you or our premium River View Room which are in fact called Bund View rooms that look up the river to the North and directly down the famous promenade and finally our Executive rooms which sit on the north east corner with breath taking views of both the Bund and Podung. Again I apologize that we did not better review these options with you upon check-in.

Again it is a shame that you did not let us know how we might help you with respect to sites to see or restaurants and shops you might want to visit just a short walk or bike ride away -as the neighborhood is in fact rich with both and only getting better. We even have Bikes for our guests to use and explore both at their leisure.

I do hope upon your return to Shanghai that you will reach out to me here at hotel Indigo and allow me to demonstrate the true passion for service and guest experience all our staff strive to enliven every day.

In real estate they always talk about Location, and this hotel has location working for and against it in so many ways. In regards to the views from the hotel, this may be the best hotel location in all of Shanghai. Located down at the end of the bund you can see old Shanghai on one side and the new gleaming built up side of the river as well. And the river view is fantastic as well, the constant traffic flow is intriguing and mesmerizing. This hotel is also the only one, that I could find, that is located directly on the river, not across the street from the river and the "Boardwalk" However this is where the location starts getting odd. With direct access to the boardwalk this hotel has a unique advantage, however their direct entrance is closed and unused, forcing you to walk around and down to the main entrance, like all other bund hotels. I would really expect them to take advantage of this connection, but they don't. Also with the location, there is nothing around the hotel, a lot of construction, and I imagine great potential, but currently nothing convenient. The closest restaurants etc... are either 1km walk to the "Cool Docks" or 1-2km to the high end traditional bund area. The construction is extending the boardwalk down towards the cool docks and I expect the nearby construction will bring many more facilities, but currently it feels very isolated.

Aside from the location, the hotel is fantastic amazing rooms, and great guest service. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone, but be prepared, for a bit of a hike or many taxis.

Dear Jasher0

Thank you for taking the time to share you comments with us as they help me and the team to remain focused on whats important and relevant to our valued guests.

Yes, Shanghai's ever changing Urban landscape provides both new and exciting opportunities for our guests to visit but during their development the inconvenience of construction. As the Bund grows South and extends all the way to the cool docks new restaurants and retail shops will begin to open in the coming year only further enhancing the many fantastic amenities and awesome views the hotel is already so well know for.

I hope we will be able to welcome you back to hotel Indigo over the coming months and years to witness and enjoy this further transformation of our neighborhood.

People,rooms, bathroom, breakfast, internet speed....
they are all rated as excellent !

The rooms are equipped with DVD players comfortable beds and pillows, a coffee maker and large windows of the bund.

The bathroom comes with a rubber duckie, bath salt and at extras you could choose bathing kits.Just imagine a long day at work and coming back to bath tub with an LCD and a power shower! (and view of the bund)

The breakfast is serving mostly clean and lean dishes.

they think for everything here, up to the extent of making sure you have your complete stationery at the working desk in the room.

This is the epitome of a wonderful home...

My wife and I spent the first 5 nights of our China holiday at the Indigo in Shanghai and absolutely loved it. We had a Bund view room, and it was amazing to look down over one of the great boulevards of the world each night. The hotel was everything we expected and more - with just the right amount of quirkiness to go along with the graciousness of the hosts and the willingness of the staff to help out wherever they could.

The room was a perfect size, and the bathroom was fantastic (glad I'm not cleaning the 'wet room' concept each day though!) The mix of modern western and 'asian' decor was just right, and the bed comfortable, and the air conditioning the best we had in China.

As others have noted, the breakfast's were great, with just enough variance each morning to keep things interesting, and the view from the Char bar finished off some pretty good cocktails and gin and tonic's.

However, the absolute undisputed star of the hotel must be Julie. I don't know exactly her title - but perhaps "Empress of all things to help out the Westerners" might be appropriate. From the moment she heard our Australian accents at breakfast on the first morning, she took us under her wing and provided some excellent advice including directions and other little nuggets of information (all in Chinese characters) to fill our days. With the exception of one little hiccup of a restaurant (that would be more appropriate for our parents than us I think) she managed to size us up, and help us find the best of Shanghai. Her and the rest of the Host team in the Client Lounge really help set this hotel apart from others. Try also a trip up to the observation deck of the Shanghia World Financial Centre (the 'bottle opener') - amazing views and a little more cost effective (and higher!) than the Pearl Tower.

We ate room service one night (after a long day our touring) which was very good, and the breakfast's I've discussed above. We didn't eat at Char, but the drinks and the view were more than enough. (Have a look at "Lost Heaven on the Bund" for a great dining experience though. Julie recommended it, but we were already on to it, and they managed to get us a booking on a Saturday night which was lucky!)

About a 10 minute stroll from the end of the Bund, so you could say it was a little isolated - but the taxi's were plentiful and cheap, and the distance made the view perfect! I couldn't recommend Indigo highly enough, and if you're planning a trip to Shanghai - I'd suggest that you give it some serious consideration.

Room Tip: Ask for a Bund View Room - it's probably better than the Pudong Views and definitely better than...

Dear AdelaideArchitect-

First allow me send heartfelt regards from "The Empress" Julie and her food and beverage team who were all so excited for having made your acquaintance. The entire hotel team look forward to welcoming you back to hotel Indigo upon your return to Shanghai.

The city itself is an incredible combination of new and old - traditional and cutting edge and very much the vibe which runs through hotel Indigo.

Thank you for your kind insights and many wishes for you both to enjoy a fantastic summer.

Stayed here two nights, and loved our stay there. Great hotel, amazing rooms, helpful reception and easy to find. Everything worked as expected.

When we wanted to go see the ERA Acrobats show at the night, we talked to the reception, who then called them right away. No questions asked, it was very professional all way through.

Unfortunately we never got to try the breakfast!

You are right - you will need to make another trip back to Shanghai and join us here at Hotel Indigo if for no other reason than to try our amazing chilled breakfast buffet and hot a la carte menu both included in a majority of the rooms packages. (evil grin)

But for whatever might bring you back to Shanghai we certainly would look forward to having you back with us again.
