Opted to stay at the Dorsett for my 24-hour layover in Shanghai because of the great advance purchase rate and its proximity to central Pudong and the Mag-Lev train to Pudong International Airport.

I requested a quiet room and was given an excellent corner room on an upper floor with a wrap-around balcony... there were great views in each direction. The room and bathroom were quite spacious and well-appointed, with a large bed, nice shower and bathtub, and even a speaker device to hook up to my iPod.

The hotel is located directly across the street from Century Park, which is a lovely place for a stroll on a nice day, and a short metro ride from the Mag-Lev terminus and not too far from most of the attractions in Pudong and across the river.

The breakfast buffet was pretty good! The service was efficient if not especially memorable, but that was fine since the room was amazing for the price I paid.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony!

The beauty of this hotel is its close proximity to the new shanghai exhibition / expo center. Its about a 1 - 1.5 km walk to the expo. Shops, Kerry Parkside mall, etc are all just in very short walking distance. There are quite a few restauarants on the street behind the hotel. The underground train runs right under this hotel. You can take Line 2 to city center (People's Square) which is 6 stops away or you can alight a stop earlier at East Nanjing Road and walk to People's Square from there. Hotel staff is very nice, helpful and courteous. The property is well mantained and is very clean.

Room Tip: Take the parkside view room facing Century Park

Best: nice park views, huge rooms, big and comfortable bed, nice amenities in the bathroom, nice decoration, big choice for breakfast, just next to an underground station for line 2, which is the one that brings you to both city airports and main tourist attractions, free shuttle bus to the exhibition place and other business centers.
Worse: WIFI does not work perfect in the room sometimes, specially in the evenings when everybody is online.
TIPS: if you like running, you can do it around the park, it is just 5 kms. Be careful if you go to the airport, you have to change subway in a specific stop (you can see it when you are inside).

Room Tip: Try to get a high floor with park view. I do not know how the city view looks like...

If you are coming from the west this is a great spot to stay. The staff are attentive, the rooms are nice and you are in walking distance of EXPO. Great breakfast. I stayed in a loft suite but think I rather be on a higher floor. If you are shy the bathroom set up is not for you. No privacy with the glass walls. The bar and restaurants were very good, so if you are not adventurist the hotel meets all of your needs. Nice bonus, Century Park across the street, Metro (Subway) across the street, convenience store attached to hotel and grocery store down the street. I used a mix of subway and taxi to get around to the tourist areas. Be aware of the "Pretend" taxies, negotiate rate before you get in. Usually nicer than most taxies. Shanghai downtown about twenty minutes away by Metro.

Room Tip: Ask to be on Century Park side

This hotel provided an enjoyable stay in Shanghai for 2 nights. The location is not central but also not far, and the hotel is directly above a metro stop. It is opposite a large park and the front of the building affords excellent open views. Breakfast was great. Check-in and out very smooth and efficient. The feeling of the hotel is extremely enjoyable. Two criticisms: the hotel restaurant is obviously not run by the hotel itself. Although I didn't try this restaurant, others in our party did and said that it was not recommended. Better to try somewhere else - even the staff of the hotel don't recommend the restaurant. Secondly: the rooms, while very well appointed, have a strange allocation of space. In my room, half the area was allocated to the bathroom, making the sleeping area feel quite compact. It's a trivial thing, but makes the experience a little 'tight' rather than relaxed. Otherwise, an excellent hotel.
