Reviewed 21 June 2010

Stayed in this hotel for 3 days in mid June 2010. We are traveling in a group and got ourselves 5 rooms. To save time, i will go thru the positives and negatives of this hotel.

NEGATIVES:
1. AC is not cold at all. I set the AC all the way to 5 Centigrade (yes, the AC panel goes all the way to 5 Degree, i have no idea how cold would that be). But the room temperature stays at 26 Deg. The room was too hot and my kids were already complaining about it. So we asked the staff to fix it but after 30 minutes they could not do it. So we had to pack everything (we have already unpacked and with 2 toddlers, you know how complicated that could be). The front desk suggested that they put a fan in our room (WTF??) or they open the window for us (nice huh, with 2 children in a 30th floor room). The front desk staff did not seem to care at all. The excuse they gave us is that, Shanghai weather has been exceptionally hot. Gimme a break. I live in Jakarta where it is much hotter than Shanghai and my AC works just fine day in and day out. Then i found out that the other on the same floor also had the same problem. The funny thing is, i found out the next day that another guest in the same floor (who is also from my group) was bumped into a suite room while i only got a standard room. Now where is the Marriott standard of service?

2. Breakfast was ridiculously bad. Pancakes were crispy. Waffle was always dark and overcooked. Muffin was underproofed. They constantly ran out of milk. And worst of all, the cereals were soggy. I had to complain to them and they had to replace 3 large bowls of them. The breakfast menu was the same every single day without any variations at all. One of the worst breakfast in a 5 star hotel. We just stayed the day before at the Wyndham Garden Hotel Hangzhou. What a difference in terms of breakfast selections and food quality. In fact, we constantly saw the executive chef (a caucasian) in the Wyndham Garden Hotel checking the food quality in the breakfast.
The expat manager at the Marriott Changfeng Park was not friendly and didnt even show that they care at all. Very bad service.

3. Overall service was very poor. Compared to the Wyndham Garden in Hangzhou which i stayed in before the Marriott, the Wyndham Garden is clearly head and shoulder above the Marriott in terms of quality of service.

4. Room service menu was very limited and poor. The terriyaki sirloin steak ended up like beef jerky (hard and chewy) and there is no terriyaki sauce at all (but they called it terriyaki steak). Very poor quality of food. But i guess it is consistent with the breakfast quality there. It appears that the hotel management does not pay good attention to their food quality for some reasons.

POSITIVES:

1. Not too many of them here. The location is in the middle of nowhere. Its not as crowded which is good but to get to the city, you have to take a 30-40 min taxi ride which ended up being a major hassle for us.

2. Hotel is new, so the room is quite nice and clean. But room layout is rather strange as the TV is on the side of the room, so we have to slightly sit an angle to watch TV. Very strange indeed. Room is rather spacious and quite modern with automatic drape/curtain. Room quality is typical of the newer Marriott hotels.

Just returned home from a 16 days, 16-31 May 2010, stayed in the brand new Marriott in Shanghai near Changfeng Park. Although the jet lag is sinking in I felt like I need to write this review to let my global trotting fellows know about the wonderful time that the Marriott and his staffs have offered me.

I arrived late on 16 May and was upgraded to the large corner room located in the 32nd floor (the top floor). The room is much large compared with others hotel near down town Puxi that I have stayed when I visited Shanghai.

The bath room is tastefully decorated with beautiful yellow and brownish marble through out the wall and floor. The large black marble sink with heated mirror, fully transparent glass door to the toilet room and glass door and wall of the shower place with additional bath tub make the room functional and feel open and airy.

The glass-top desk is equipped with various connectors to the large screen LED TV (at least 46”) located to the right side of the desk and is tunable to either bed side or sofa side. A sofa and a comfortable chair are located along the large window overlooking the river side of the Changfeng Park that has large and small man-made ponds. The west facing side also has a large glass window overlooks some new constructions and. appeared to be, the private boat/yard club. Both south and west sides have two layers of curtains electronically controlled by push buttons. The new and contemporary flush carpet makes the room fell luxury and warm.

The executive lounge is located in 31st floor that can be accessed from 32nd and 30th floor through a carpeted large stairs, a very thoughtful and convenient design without using the elevator. Since I arrived late so by the time I went to check out the lounge it’s almost close to midnight. Although the executive lounge is due to close at the midnight I was greeted warmly by the lounge staff, Katarina, whom has not only have a beautiful smile but also patience to help me to settle down. With her after hour care I felt right away that I was in the right place for my 15 more days of stay.

Upon taking breakfasts, enjoying happy hours, and indulging the incredible tasty and excellent presented dessert in the executive lounge I have came to know most of the lounge staffs that have offered me the first class home-felt services, a trade mark of what the G.M., Mr. Malik is striving for when he talked about the unique character of this Marriott that he is managing.

Along with my four other clients/customers/colleagues that I invited to stay with me, we all have agreed that our stay is without doubt, very enjoyable. When I briefly made my unbiased positive remarks to Mr. Marriott during his Shanghai Marriott visit, I really mean it.

My wife and I stayed here with our Chamber of Commerce. Everything is very new and clean, and the food was high quality. One negative was my electric shaver was missing and housekeeping didn't know what happened to it. Americans should bring a power converter as not all outlets can handle US appliances. Staff is still learning and service can be slow, but all were very friendly. We had a single kingsized bedroom, and it was a little small. I heard that the two bed rooms were larger. Location is a little far from attractions, but we had a tour bus anyways. Despite the "negatives," I still highly recommend this hotel.

Location-wise: both good and bad. It is very close to ChengFeng park and less busy compared to other parts of Shanghai. A residential area, so relatively quiet. Getting to the nearest subway station will take about 15-20 mins on foot. Good news is that there is actually a complimentary shuttle bus that runs (not sure how often since I was not interested in it) to the Bund area, Nanjing Rd, and a few more places.

Interior: This is with the typical new hype type of Marriott image. Spacious and of as expected still new since it was just opened recently.

Rooms: Not sure if I was given an upgrade, but it was a corner room, and relatively spacious with again lots of usage of glass in the bathroom. Room is loaded with new electronic gadgets and connections to whatever you have, though strangely the connections goes directy to those on the TV which itself is already quite heavy loaded with cables. Would have expected those separate connection boxes as you see coming up now at quite a numbe of properties. The bed if up to marriott standard.

Exec. floor: Great lounge with a good spread of b'fast and evening canapes. Yesterday I was the only person for the evening canapes and there was so much food. Great wine incld Chinese branded ones. They even had a whole duck for the Peking duck! Lounge attendents are great and very friendly. Two laptops are available for use.

Health club + Sauna: Well kept and very functional.

Staff: Overall, as usual very friendly. Again a mixture of Chinese and foreign staff. All helpful and level of English is acceptable.

Overall impression: A good one. I only hope that they don't overcharge since location is still the only setback here.
