exceptionally good service, especially considering this is a newly opened hotel. they keep a copy of you ID, so no need to have it scanned every time. you may think there is a privacy issue, but i would say better they keep a copy on file than making a paper copy each time and ends up god knows where

I’ve stayed in a lot of 5-star hotels around the world (see my other reviews). This hotel is truly exceptional and I would give it more than 5-stars if possible. We stayed herein August 2014. Here are some factual observations:

1. The location is great. The back of the hotel is on the Bund (the front is not). It is a 10 minute walk to the end of Nanjing Street, and about a 15 minute walk to Yu garden. The subway was about 10-15 minutes’ walk. We had a Bund-view room on the 20th floor, which had a spectacular view of the Pudong skyline. The lobby is very beautiful, and has a more modern style than, for instance, the Fairmont.

2. The room itself is top notch. The style is more modern, which I personally prefer. The room itself is new, beautiful marble, well-laid out, and spacious. They have Japanese-style Toto toilets. There is a ‘technology kit’ that has every wire you could possible need to connect your iDevice to the TV system in the room. There is also an LCD panel to control the lights and the curtains. The bed was a bit hard for my taste, but this is obviously a personal preference.

3. Internet: FINALLY! A hotel that gets it and provides free WiFi to an unlimited number of devices. The quality was good enough that I could stream video and make telephone calls. This is the way hotel WiFi access should be.

4. Service: The service was spectacular. Before I arrived I had several e-mail exchanges with the concierge to set up some special requests. The concierge was super-responsive to e-mail and took care of everything perfectly before we arrived. The concierge also had SIM cards available for purchase at a reasonable price, and took care of several special requests while we were there. The service was excellent without being overly formal like you would find in Tokyo.

5. The Spa: I’ve gotten massages at high-end hotel spas around the world (e.g., Burj al Arab, Bangkok Mandarin Oriental, Amanusa, etc.), and this spa was, without a doubt, the best experience I’ve had. The treatment room itself was incredible and the massage was the best massage I’ve ever had.

6. The pool/gym: The pool is indoors, with windows to the exterior. The pool is as good as can be expected for an indoor pool. They have lounge chairs around the room you can relax in. The gym was ok for a hotel gym, but not great.

7. Breakfast: We ate at the breakfast buffet one day. It was about US$100 for two people, which is about what I would expect for a hotel of this class. The food was excellent (for a buffet) and the service was very good.

8. Airport transfer: We arranged a transfer to/from the hotel through the Concierge. Everything went smoothly and the driver was waiting for us with a sign inside the airport as expected. The car was a Mercedes S-class with free WiFi. It was a bit pricey for Shanghai, but in line with what I have paid at other 5-star hotels.

What an amazing Hotel. There is nothing we could fault. From the prime location, to the amazing staff, the wonderful, spacious rooms, great food and very clean. Don`t miss a visit to the Bar, with the longest Bar counter in town. The Portugese Barman is amazing and mixes wonderful drinks. The view from the Hotel at night to the Pudong side is priceless. The breakfast buffet did cover everything one could possible wish for and crew was friendly and professional. Definitely worth a visit

This property is simple to review. Excellent hard product (room, lobby etc) but the service is definitely not up to standards with a Mandarin Oriental or the Peninsula I stayed in I can compare with in Asia; Staff is just not up to par with their peers in Asia. I assume it will take some time train them and get to the same level. Did get upgraded thanks to Diamond status

A stay at the Waldorf Astoria on the Bund is an experience in itself. I did not want to leave.

We loved our 3 night stay here. The service from all staff was just incredible - no exceptions. They anticipated our needs without us realising that they were there.

We had a river facing room and it was very spacious and beautifully appointed. The furnishings were luxurious and it had all the mod cons including a nespresso machine, TV concealed in the bathroom mirror, a loo that was tantamount to a throne and more. (don't want to spoil all the surprises). The free wifi was so easy to use, was great and reliable

The breakfast was delicious and extensive with so many fresh and inviting options. The tables in the dining room are spaced well away from each other which gives one privacy in a public area.

The business lounge is great, offering free soft drinks, coffee, snacks in a very comfortable, spacious and inviting area.

We were in a river facing room, about midway up and had river views that were slightly interrupted by the buildings in front, including the front tower of the WA.

The hotel is well placed on the Bund. Close enough to walk to good restaurants nearby and also to take a walk along the Bund.

We flew into Shanghai Pudong International Airport. We decided to take the Maglev train from the airport to Longyang Road and then a cab to the hotel. It was really easy to do. The directions to the train in the airport are very clear. It was a fun experience. It's always a good idea to have your hotel name and address written in Mandarin, so that the cab drivers know exactly where to take you.

I should add that we spent 7 nights in Shanghai - 3 at the Waldorf Astoria on the Bund and 4 across the river at the Shangri-La Pudong. Should we return to Shanghai, the Waldorf Astoria would without any doubt be our hotel of choice.

Loved being on the Bund side, loved the Waldorf Astoria

Well done to all concerned for providing an incredible experience.

Room Tip: River facing is a treat if you can

There is no other way to describe this hotel but excellent....staff, check in, breakfast, rooms, facilities etc. Everything is very much top notch. Pricey but very much worth the experience.

We spent 4 wonderful nights at the Waldorf on the Bund. Our room was on the higher floors so we had an amazing view of the Bund - worth the extra expense! The hotel does EVERYTHING well - from registration to check out. The property is gorgeous in every way. Our room was magnificent - well appointed, luxurious, and modern. The buffet breakfast was exceptional. It's location was perfect. We walked along the river nightly and toured easily. Can't wait to return!

Room Tip: Get a higher room with a Bund view.
