“Very comfortable bed in ok hotel not too far from Pudong Airport”
Reviewed 17 October 2012

Location
The hotel is located close by to the Metro stop "Chuansha", this stop is the 5th stop from Pudong International Airport and takes around 15-20 minutes. I highly recommend the metro from the airport because I got quoted 300 RMB by taxi (which also takes around 20 minutes) where as the metro was 4 RMB. Once you come out of the metro you should see the building and its about 5 minute walk but there are plenty of taxi's outside if you need assistance with luggage.
Around the hotel there is a small shopping mall which lots of different shops including grocery computer and clothes shops. There various chinese restaurants and some american fast food restaurants such Mc Donalds and Papa John.
To get to downtown on the metro to say Peoples Squares takes about an hour but is on the same line. They do i believe offer a free shuttle but when i called at the airport there was at least an hour wait and apparently it takes 40 minutes, so metro is a lot quicker.
Room
The room is actually quite large and has all comfort amenities such as a large flat screen TV, a good desk with comfortable chair, a mini couch and table and the bathroom has both a bath and Shower. The internet is only cable not wifi which is a bit annoying as the cable is rather short. The room was on the 12th floor and offered a decent view from the glass to floor windows. There are plenty of mirrors and very good lighting options including dimmer switches. The king size bed was the highlight of the hotel, it was extremely comfortable soft and large and slept very well. All in all the room decor was dark and relaxing but nothing special, it had good cupboard space and the curtains are able to completely block out all light from outside enabling sleep during the day. The bathroom was airy and with the bath had typical window to room with electronic shutters, the shower was very good with rain shower above and small detached one, all very clean. There was plenty of amount of amenities but not branded and not partially special. The TV is good size but is limited for english speaking channels (MSN, HBO & CNN only). All in all room was very clean, spacious and comfortable.
Facilities
The hotel has three restaurants, a bar and spa gym area. Only used the main one for breakfast and had room service. Room service was adequate, ordered club sandwich which arrived in less than 20 minutes (1.30am), it tasted good but was simply presented but at 60RMB it was ok. Breakfast was ok, plenty of asian options, western options include chicken sausage, bacon, egg, waffles, pancakes and beans. All presented buffet style. The food was again adequate with plenty of bread and pastry options. There was also a salad bar but a limited amount of fruit and some of the meats was left uncovered. Bread though was very fresh and service was ok, staff fairly welcoming and offer to get hot drinks, food was replenished quickly and plates were cleared frequently.
Didn't visit the bar or other restaurants but did see the area's and looked ok. Visited the gym and spa area but didnt use, the gym was quite good with modern equipment and clean. The Spa offers massage but found it a bit expensive so didnt use. (Massages around 400 RMB for an hour). The general decor is modern but somewhat tacky.
Staff
Staff were in general ok but not the most helpful. The front desk whom were the only staff that spoke good English were fairly quick in check-in and check-out but with questions such as transfer and time to downtown was instructed to speak to concierge. Concierge spoke very little English and so was not so helpful.
Overall the hotel was fine and good for the price 700 RMB with breakfast. The location is ok if you need to be close to PVG airport but not so great to get to downtown area.

The Qube - Previously known as Howard Johnson hotel ... you need to get the name right as it is hardly visible otherwise.

The hotel is nothing short of amazing value for money. Huge rooms (better than most 5 stars), free wi-fi, clean carpets, English speaking staff and practically every facility you can ask for in a decent hotel.

Satellite television service also available along with Pay TV for lonely nights in China. The spa is pricey but if you are up to it, it is very good value for money too. Very professional.

Only about 20 minutes from Pudong airport, if you are planning to stay and look around in Shanghai with or without family, its an amazing place. However, in case you need to take flights from Hongqiao airport, you may want to think about it.

Overall a wonderful experience and most recommended.

The only reason I stayed here was because of the Typhoon that knocked out all the flights for 12 to 18 hours on August 8th 2012. The storm had canceled all flights and instead of sleeping at the airport and because of the Ramada was already full I found this on a iPhone ap for about $125 a night. They gave me a 5 floor room which was okay but not great by any means. But since most other international travelers spent 2 hours to get back to the city I was glad to get this hotel and it only took us about 20mins to get to the Cube. Rooms are a little out dated and there was only CNN to watch. The bar was ok but not great and the food was way too salty.

This was the closest hotel I could find that was not already booked. It’s about 10kms and 50~60 RMB taxi ride from the airport. So if you cannot get out of PVG and cannot get the Ramada this is an option, but not recommend for more than one night.

Room Tip: do not get a 5th floor room - Very noisy

Nice hotel with helpful (sufficiently english speaking) staff, located around 20min from Pudong Airport. Free hotel shuttles leave each hr, but need to be booked then night before.
There are hotels located closer to the airport, but you will still need a shuttle or taxi anyway...

Hotel is located next to the subway for direct access to the city centre (takes about 1hr). Note: Trains only return halfway back to Chuansha after 9pm - so will need to take a short taxi ride if returning after that...
There are few things to see on a nice Sunday morning in the local area, including a park, markets and section of the old city wall all within walking distance.

Wow, initial lobby impression and room, for the price paid is exceptional.

As others have reported, this is now a 'Qube' hotel, not a Howard Johnson.

I didn't want to wait on the hourly airport shuttle, so jumped in a cab at the airport. I showed the driver my printed confirmation, with address (In Chinese & English), and he set off. After 5 minutes he starts babbling in Chinese and obviously has no idea where he's going ...... arghhhhh. I ended up guiding him in with my iPhone GPS, while taking the opportunity to curse at him (Made me feel better).

I booked some months ago, via Howard Johnson website, and got a rate including breakfast of 600 CYN = approx. $94. The room was easily of a $200+ USA Hilton/Hyatt quality.

Surrounded by lots of shops & restaurants, catering more for locals than international visitors.

A BIG NEGATIVE ..... Wireless network was not available, meaning it wasn't even visible ! and the wired connection in the room was slow. In fact so slow, I wish I'd brought my dial up modem from the '70's ! But, it did its job eventually !

This is definitely a location that works for 1 or 2 nights when flying in or out, but not if you're visiting or doing business in central Shanghai.

Breakfast was fine, plenty of choice, and typical Asian buffet fare.

I'd probably choose the Radisson Blu in Pudong (5 minutes further by Taxi) over this location, due to the internet service and better facilities surrounding the hotel that cater more for international visitors. But, you'll pay at least $150 per night.

This hotel, which actually no longer is a Howard Johnson (they now call themselves "the Cube"!) is situated in a residential part of the Pu-dong aria of Shanghai. There is a busy metro station only a few minutes walk away with a direct connection to the city center (the television tower) and both the airports. The hotel provide a free airport (Pu-dong airport) shuttle service which was much faster and more convenient than the metro. There is also a newly built, local shopping aria with numerous restaurants and coffee shops adjacent to the hotel. The rooms are really spacious and the bath room a "must see". The breakfast was also good and included in the price for my part. NB! The rack rate is three times higher as the price I actually paid through "dhr.com"! I suspect Howard Johnsen at selling of rooms before the actual transaction to "the Cube", however this is just a thought I have.
