I travel throughout China on business - and so I could stay at more traditional 5 star places, but I like to take my wife and son with me occasionally. We like to rent apartments as it gives us a bit more room. Our son is 5 so it is nice not to have lights out at 8 PM.
The place is solidly 3-star in terms of quality, amenities, etc. Very clean, not as noisy as some people would make it out to be (you are in the middle of Shanghai), especially if you close the windows and use the AC. The place was a bit spartan, and the bed was very hard, but overall we were fine. Given the location (steps from Jing'an Temple and Park, and just across the street from my office in Shanghai), it was great. Two subway stops to The Bund, and maybe a ten or fifteen minute walk to the French Concession. There is a mini mart just below the hotel, and loads of decent restaurants close at hand.
No major complaints, you just have to realize that this is not a hotel and it is China - so expect some odd procedures. We were quite ok with it, and it was nice to have amenities such as a full sized fridge, a microwave, stove, etc. If we needed a place in Shanghai again, we would probably consider it. Quite good value for money.More
