A tourist spot but offering more variety and quality than the trinkets at Yu Gardens.

Worth a wander around, a haggle and a stop for a feed or a drink.

Short walk from the metro stop.

A nice place to start your tree-lined stroll of the French Concession and visit to slightly funky Tianzifang but do it during weekdays to avoid crowds and never during a holiday. This area is all about wandering and discovery at your pace. Inevitably, you'll find a hidden gem to call your own. A worthy stop in Shanghai.
Easily accessed via subway line 9 at the Damuqiao station.

Some cute original shops, and more art studios than a normal curio type, but prices are well over iced. Nice to browse, can be done in 30-45 minutes, unless a woman is in ow. Add 1 hr for the jewelry shops! Overall worth a stop, but not for buying anything candidly.
Oh, a few overpriced places to eat too. Clean, safe, menus in several languages.

this area of small streets, tourist trap shops and not-so-clean restaurants is excellent because you just step into another world where every few meters a new surprise is waiting for you. Be it the small shop where a local photographer sells is over-photoshopped impressions of old-vs-new Shanghai or the local fashion designer who sells simple but almost avant-garde silk garments, many of the shops as well as cozy indian-, thai- or whatever-restaurants and bars continuously awake your curiosity and invite you to get lost, to change your plans or at least to come back again another time...

You will forget that you are in China in this small collection of lane ways. There are many cute shops selling souvenirs and some also selling art and more interesting products. There are innumerable restaurants to chose from. It is a nice place for a day trip but not going to give you an experience of the 'real china'....but sometimes that's a welcome break!
