The Langham Shanghai Xintiandi

Reviewed 31 July 2011

Stayed at the Langham for 2 nights. They are currently renovating the hotel so guests are offered a free mini bar (very nice!), free internet access and laundry service for the stay. The renovations had no negative impact on my stay and i wasn't disturbed by any noise. I loved that the entire hotel had been sprayed with a special yet subtle fragrance which made you feel like you where walking into a spa. The room was spacious and stylish and one must love the high tech toilet (cover opens on its own). Breakfast on the second floor was laid out beautifully and you are really spoiled for choice. On the 5th floor they have a cool outdoor bar with big comfy sofas and happy hour (the cocktails were very yummy) and free snacks. The hotel is in walking distance to many shops and also just 2 minutes from Xintiandi where you can find cafe, bars and restaurants. All in all very good hotel, in great location and friendly staff. Good for leisure and business.

I travel to shanghai every month for work, so i am very familiar with the city and all of the major hotels. On this particular trip my wife joined me for her first trip to china. Since I was going to be at the office for 2 days during our week stay, I wanted to find a hotel and neighborhood that would be comfortable for her. This was my first experience at the langham and it was truly fantastic. The room was one of the most lavish I have stayed in anywhere in the world, the food was very good and the service was professional and friendly. If you have never been to shanghai, staying right next to xintiandi is the perfect place to be. Don't underestimate the importance of being in a fun, vibrant neighborhood for your stay. I highly, highly recommend this hotel and the surrounding area as a great place to stay in shanghai. Believe me when I tell you this one is hard to beat, especially for value. Expect to pay $500-$1,000 US per night at another 5 star in shanghai to get the same level of room and experience that will cost you $200 at the langham. I hope you enjoy as much as we did!

Room Tip: Stay 5 nights and get an amazing rom upgrade

This hotel has something special! The great rooms coupled with superior food and the service is second to none. This is a brand new hotel and clearly they have lived up to the luxury standard you expect of a Langham. Right in the centre of Shanghai, in down town Xintiandi (pronounced "shin tan di") which is the cafe society of Shanghai with a plethora of restaurants, cafes, bars and shopping. The staff speak perfect English, which is not that common in Shanghai and they could not be more engaging. Not the cheapest hotel in town but you get what you pay for.

Room Tip: Ask for a junior suite.

We reserved the Langham Xintiandi based upon our affinity for the Langham brand. Upon arriving, we were hugely disappointed to learn that the hotel was only in 'soft opening' stage and many of the advertised features of the hotel which the hotel website boasts were not completed such as the pool and gym. (We promised our daughter a hotel with pool). The reservation was made directly through the Langham Xintiandi website which did not reflect its incomplete status. The hotel is currently still under construction and was surrounded by construction boards on the exterior. Our concern with the misrepresentation of the state of readiness of the Langham's facilities was raised with the manager who indicated that this was a comment made by several guests and they have intentions to change their website. I am not convinced of the sincerity of this statement. I have issue with paying full price for a hotel still under construction and with many of its facilities inaccessible. While the location is perfect and the room features are without complaint, I would hesitate to stay here until the hotel is complete.

I stayed at Langham Xintiandi for one night for Business in Shanghai in late June 2011.I was very impressed as I come to Shanghai quite often and normally stay at JIA or Le Royal Meridien.

It is quite convenient from the airport as it is located close to the elevated freeway. As it is also next to Xin Tian Di precinct, it was easy for a evening stroll for a meal, drink or a bit of shopping. There is a metro stop next door as well (Huang Pi Nan Lu Station) which is an added bonus. The room was very large and comfortable, with a great lounge chair by the window overlooking Xin Tian Di, and with a fantastic and large bathroom!

There was WiFi throughout the hotel (for a fee - but it was stable and fast).

Location - sitting right in front of the Xintiandi area, 2 blocks up to the South Huangpi subway station, easy access and extremely convenient.
Check in - Given an early check in at 12PM by Susan at the desk, however no explaination on the different discounts I'm entitled for.
Service - Dropped off at the hotel entrance driveway, Martyn assisted with the luggage straightaway and bags were taken straight up to the room and he also did a brief introduction around the area and the room, nice touch. Terry at the concierge did great also, however the Langham Yangtze was the master in this category.
Rooms - room 1015 facing directly to the Xintiandi, cool faciilities with the nice coffee machine, Ipod dock, huge bathroom, automatic toilet flush, the massive king size bed...Everything's in good conditions.
Check out - Perhaps due to the hic-cup on the ''failed to explain on the discounts applicable'' no discounts were applied before presenting the bill, and they also forgot to give me a copy of the receipt - which I had the Langham Yangtze team to assist in getting a copy after check out. Didin't expect this at all.

Footnote
Having stayed in both the Xintiandi and the Yangtze, all i can say was with what Xintiandi has to offer physically and the service the Yangtze provides, no other hotels could ever beat this brand.

This is a very comfortable new hotel in the central downtown area of the city. The location of the hotel is great as it offers easy access to several shopping, dining options in the xintiandi area. The rooms are very modern and comfortable. The service is helpful and efficient. Only tried the breakfast in the hotel and this was a good spread offering extensive set of choices. Highly recommended!
