When i show hotel confirmation e mail and booking.com voucher they say that by hotel mistake hotel had cancel booking and now NO ROOM. I met every person in reception but same answer then i met manager. They also say no room. I found from guest who stay there say that due to rush they sold room with higher price. Same thing happen with other three guest.. Then i request to book another hotel and manager has booked other hotel in holiday inn downtown with 400 RMB. But when we reach at 11. Pm they say that we did not get any call . and finally i stay there with 800 RMB. Now how you can trust hotel confirmation. How much lie they are speaking. Please please avoide this hotel any how

We have just returned from the hayes & jarvis 'treasures of china' tour. We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights and found it to be a very comfortable hotel, clean and with excellent customer service. The location initially concerned us upon arrival because the surrounding
Streets have a 'shanty town' feel to them. However, we quickly realised that this was in fact a bonus as walking around them in the evening, we felt very safe and the people were exceptionally friendly towards us. As the other hotels were in the modern shanghai we felt we had experienced a more faithful/realistic shanghai than some other co-travellers. Breakfast was ok but inferior to the other hotels we stayed in in Beijing and xian. We were aware that other guests were put off by the glass 'wall' between the bathroom and bedroom. As there is a pull down blind and shower curtain which can be used to inhibit the view into the bathroom we didn't see it to be a problem......there is a small supermarket almost right outside the hotel entrance but for such items as say bottled water, it is cheaper to venture into the side streets where prices are even better value. The hotel is expensive for food and drink but there is a complex called 'joy city' some 15 mins walk away with a large choice of restaurants to suit all budgets.

The plus points, all of the staff whilst their English was limited were helpful and tried their hardest. Nothing was a problem for them.
Just next to the hotel was a small grocery store where you could purchase reasonable priced drinks and snacks for your room or the following days excursions.
Taxis in Shanghai are very cheap, you can travel anywhere for about 300RMB £3.

Everything else was dreadful. The location was very poor right next to a local slum. There are no restaurants near by.
On arrival the carpet in the room was filthy we had to ask for it to be cleaned. The room itself was very dated and rough round the edges.

Despite several complaints the air conditioning failed to work for 90% of our stay.

The breakfast was horrible, cold, tasteless and some items had run out and weren't replaced.

Both of the bar areas were lifeless and not somewhere you'd want to spend anytime. The prices of the drinks were extortionate.

Finally the wifi was very slow and unable to support Skype.

Room Tip: Good room chose a different hotel

The rooms are large and nicely fitted out with glass wall to the bathroom (a common practise in Chinese hotels) but the air conditioning never worked in any of our rooms, all 5 of them! it was so hot In the rooms we all complained and our Chinese guide also got involved but it was never sorted. Beds are very firm but good pillows.
The staff have limited English and this is a problem but use of a app on an iphone we managed to get around.
The hotel is in a very poor part of the city and there is no restaurants near buy so you need a taxi to take you else where. This is ok as they are cheap!! really cheap but taxi drivers do not speak English so always have directions written in Mandarin. Especially your hotel address...

The breakfast were poor. and choice very limited, I am getting used to tinned fruit and toast, or the occasional boiled egg...

Would never have booked this hotel myself, pity Hayes and Jarvis did.

Room Tip: Don't stay here, find a hotel in a better location

Decent hotel. Nice, big rooms. Good breakfast.
Some downsides through. The rooms are not completely soundproof and there were some disturbances due to road work going on downstairs (I was on the 19th floor). The air conditioning in my room did not work properly throughout my stay despite 3 complaints (1 on each day). I don't know if anyone actually came to check the a/c, as I was out of the hotel through the day and returned only after dinner on all days.
Verdict: Decent, economical place to stay if you don't actually need to spend much time in the hotel.

There are both positive and negative sides for this hotel.
The Positives are:
The hotel is very clean and tidy with spacious rooms, big comfortable beds, and a good internet connection in the room but no wi-fi. The reception is fast and you have money exchange facilities in the hotel and they give you the best exchange rates in the whole of Shanghai. The concierge is a marvel and is very very helpful. He even went along with me to show me the nearest metro station as I couldn't understand the direction due to his poor English speaking power. The breakfast is lavish although as an Indian I got very few things for my taste. The nearest Metro stop is only 2 stations from the Shanghai Railway Station.
The Negatives are :
Very poor English from the staff (well, that is present throughout China). The hotel is located in the middle of a slum and the area is not safe at night. The entrance is just horrible. The rooms although are cleaned daily but the bed-sheets are not changed throughout your length of stay. Only Chinese tea making facility in the room which you cannot drink. No coffee, no english/normal tea. The house-keeper has to be reminded everyday for soap replenishment. Molds present on the wall adjacent to the bathroom and the AC was blowing hot air when outside temp was 25 degrees. I had to keep the windows open every night for fear of suffocation. The water pressure is too low for a proper bath.
Overall, if you can accept these disabilities, the hotel is a good choice compared to the price you are paying, which is peanuts compared to the overpriced, substandard and horrible hotels (Hell Holes) of the European countries where these sort of hotels will charge you ten times the rate you are paying here.

Room Tip: Stay on the top floors to avoid seeing the slum all through your stay.
