“Very new and convenient hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2012

The room facility is very new and can stay here very comfortably.
Wifi access is also good.
And this hotel is very close to the People's Square, it is so convenient.
If I visit Shanghai again, I will choose this hotel again.

We live in Shanghai but stayed here for 6 nights recently after we returned from our summer holiday. Our apartment had some mold issues and had to get cleaned. But despite the inconvenience, it was a real pleasure to stay here and get over our jet lag in the comfort of this hotel. Everyone we ran into had a friendly smile and they were all so nice to our little 4 yr. old daughter. We enjoyed our big breakfast every morning in the restaurant, and because we had executive lounge privileges, we usually ended up in the lounge for dinner. The beds were comfortable, the shower was great, and there were lots of nice amenities in the room and bathroom. We'll definitely come back here if we need to, and recommend it highly.

Everything from the gym to the bed to the breakfast was wonderful. I didn't get into the rest of the city much because I was here for a conference, but it was a great hotel. My only complaint was that the car service from the airport was incredibly expensive. Taking a cab was 1/10th the price.

Room Tip: Every room was great.

Yes, rooms are new. Yes, location is fantastic. Ususally these would suffice. But the service we experienced at Marriot Hotel City Centre was of such bad quality that have out-balanced these upsides.

A few examples:

1) They don't have the electronic "do not disturb" button and on the first day we didn't notice that you need to use one of those old fashioned paper signs hanging on the doornob and so we didn't use it. The next morning, around 10am, while I was working on my laptop and my partner still in bed, the service lady opened the door WITHOUT knocking nor ringing the bell. I was stunned. What's even more astonishing was that 30 mins later, the door bell ranged, and within a second or two, before I even managed to stand up, the door was opened again. This time a guy in suit came in, surprised to see me in my underpants, quickly backed off and said he only wished to check weather the room has been serviced.

2) We were told during check-in that they were offering a promotion that will have us registered as member so that internet usage would be free of charge. However, the free internet service was not made available until the morning of the third day (the day on which we checked out), as the registration (so we were told) process required time.

2) A bunch of other small examples. The doorman was rude. On one occassion, I was walking out of the hotel and I was pretty sure he saw me coming because we looked into each other's eyes. Instead of opening the door for us, as he is employed to do, he walked away and started chatting with a group of other hotel staff who were standing by the front entrance, smoking. When I told him I need a taxi, Im pretty sure he fired me an angry glance and pointed to one parked outside of the hotel without uttering a word. I tried room service one night and had to convince the other side of the phone that caesar salad is in fact on the overnight menu, as she consistently insisted that it was not.

New hotel with a great location. The hotel suite was very clean, comfortable and a great view over the city. Enjoyed the fireworks for Chinese New Year from the comfort of our room. Hotel staff very helpful and courtesy with great recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing locations. The breakfast buffet was very good with a wide choice of food and wonderful street views from the floor to ceiling windows. The lounge on the first floor was a nice place to have a cocktail or an afternoon snack.
The hotel is located a few minutes walk from the subway station and Walking Street. Taxi's are very easy to use around town and the wait for a taxi was short. Lots of english spoken but make sure to take the hotel business card for the taxi ride back to the hotel. Not all taxi drivers speak english.
A must place to stay for your visit in Shanghai. Very safe and comfortable place to stay. This Marriot location and I have travelled alot has the most helpful and courteous concierge, check in, bellmen and housekeeping staff.

This was one of the nicest Marriotts that I have ever stayed at. Being brand new definitely helps. As a platinum elite member, we stayed using points and were upgraded to a suite. The room was beautiful with stylish furniture, decorations, fresh flowers and fruit. We had a nice view although we did not face the Bund. The bathroom has a glass wall into the room, a design that we also had in the Beijing Marriott City Wall. A thoughtful touch in the room was a leather box filled with assorted varieties of digital cables. We also had two emergency escape gas masks in our closet. I've never seen that before and hope that they are in more rooms than just the suites. We only ate in the concierge lounge, so I can't comment on any of the hotel restaurants. The view from the concierge lounge was amazing looking out onto the interesting Shanghai skyscraper architecture, the food was decent, and the staff helpful and polite. As others have mentioned, the location is convenient to the walking street and subway. The Bund was about a 25 minute easy walk from the hotel.

This is one of the best located hotels in Shanghai. The Shanghai’s central subway station, People’s Square Station, is less than 5 min walking away. Within 2 min. walking, one can find Pizza Hut (two), KFC (two), BBK, McDonald, Starbucks and many local restaurants.

The hotel is the newest in Shanghai. Actually it’s too new that the “new car smell” made my wife worried (about residual solvents). The room size is decent. We had a double room and felt a little tight. Bath room has a large glass window to the room (a very good design!). The towels’ size and thickness are better than many other similar Marriott’s. The health & spa fallibilities are roomy and bright (the Jacuzzi’s water temperature was not hot though).

The services we used, from checking in, luggage handling, spa treatments to arranging express receiving and delivery, were good to excellent.

As usual, we didn’t use any on-site restaurants. We did get deserts from the Java+ coffee shop, which was very good (but expensive).

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and it will be one of our top choices for our future stays in Shanghai.
