“Good rooms but service was not up to the standard”
Reviewed 18 August 2014 via mobile

Fen Yan Garden hotel is perfectly located in the center of SH. Many location are walking distance. The hotel is a welcomed alternative to the big block hotels. The rooms are spacious and well equipped. When I was there the service was not really what I expected. The bar, nicely located in a separate building was closing even before the official closing time of 9:30pm. The wifi connection in the room has to be requested and is granted by a wifi box to be requested at the reception. No international TV channels are provided in the room.

This 1930s era hotel -- but much refurbished since then -- turned out to be exactly what my wife and I were looking for! In a private courtyard off Fenyang road, this handsome but understated hotel was an oasis in a city dominated by anonymous high rise everythings! The front desk speaks limited but adequate english, but hey, this is Shanghai! With the exception of in-room wifi, this hotel has all the amenities one might expect from a first class hotel. The housekeeping staff was great. Beds were comfortable. Air conditioning was swell, though we preferred opening the windows most of the time. But this one is in the heart of the old French Concession with its verdant boulevards and excellent -- even outstanding -- restos nearby.
Within a 15 minute walk of the hotel we particularly liked Lost Heaven, a Yunnanese restaurant, and Two Coconuts, which features Thai cuisine. Our favorite, however, was a Japanese resto called People. Wonderful decor and extremely inventive dishes!

Only negative was the wifi; we had to return several times to the front desk to get them to help us get on line, and then the only place it would work was the lobby.

It was a beautiful hotel with a large garden area. The hotel is close to everything but felt like a peaceful retreat in the heart of Shanghai. We were pleasantly surprised at how charming it is. The historic Spanish building next to the main hotel has been converted to a restaurant had some amazing architectural details. They did such a wonderful job renovating it since it had so much history behind it. Staff were very friendly. I would definitely come back.

My husband and I enjoyed our seven day stay in this hotel very much. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the location in the French Concession was hard to beat. The garden setting and the lack of street noise was quite unique and a pleasure to come "home" to after a day of sightseeing.

The internet does require a direct Ethernet connection (no wifi in the room). There is wifi in the lobby but requires assistance from the front desk.

The Fenyang Garden Hotel is a garden oasis within the hustle and bustle of Shanghai's busy streets. It is quiet, clean and elegant (albeit a bit dated), with traditional decor and large, spacious rooms. The location is ideal if proximity to the main tourist sights is not a priority: walking distance to shopping, restaurants, and nightlife, including Huaihai Lu, Dongping Lu, and Yongkang Lu. The one major drawback is that the hotel's WiFi was miserably slow, and virtually unusable in the room I was in.

We recently stayed a third time at this boutique hotel. Comparing to previous stays, there were some maintenance issues, in particular, the fluctuating shower pressures. While the water was hot, the water pressure was not as good. The bathroom sink tap seemed to have the same pressure problem.

A more irking issue is the lack of wifi in hotel rooms, unlike in our previous visits. The lobby free wifi, however, was excruciatingly slow, and unless you have a Chinese mobile number, you have to ask the desk for a temp password every 24 hours.

Overall, it was a bit of letdown this time around. But you can't beat the location.

Room Tip: Renovated rooms with balcony.

Ok... it is no longer a secret. The Fenyang Garden Hotel is excellent. This hotel is in a great location with lots of little restaurants and shops on the doorstep. The rooms are excellent, the grounds are lovely and the service low key but pleasant and friendly. It is an oasis in Shanghai. The only thing that let's it down slightly is the breakfast buffet which is distinctly local and not in the least international... but hey, nothing is perfect. I would certainly stay there again.
