Thames Town

A long way out of town and nothing there! An odd collection of British style buildings, including phone boxes and fish and chip shop but no fish and chips!

located in Songjiang Xincheng, very close to the Hotel Vienna (on Renmin Bei Lu) lies a curious little development known as Thames Town. I read about this place online recently and decided to pay it a visit. Despite it being quite far out from the center of Shanghai it is well worth a visit if the weather is good.

The place is designed to look like various classic European suburbs so there are different streets that either resemble an English Village or German Statdt. It really is lovely and even though it new, for a Chinese idea it is not tacky and some of the bulidings look very authentic. There are even red telephone boxes dotted about!

What is thre to do in this place? Well it is nice to stroll around and explore. The area is very peaceful with not much traffic. It has various shops, theatre, a bay with hotel (The Liston) a bay side restaurant and various other places to hang out or just take a few photos. It is a popular choice for the Chinese Wedding photo shoot.

If you are feeling thirsty there are two great bars on the High Street. Rose Bar and Twilight Club. Both open early afternoon and stay open until 2am. They are both German influenced and you can get a great draft HB inb Rose Bar, which is German owned and is the real deal in terms of a German bar, it has to be said.

To get here take a line 9 metro to Songjiang Xincheng and then a taxi which will cost you 12-15 RMB.
