You get what you pay for, which in this case was cigarette smoke coming through the AC, hairs in the bathroom, and flies for roommates. There was a fourth-floor bar located directly outside my room, which was cause for noise during the night. Do not trust the pictures. Would not come back.

Don't be misled by the name - this is a hostel and not a hotel. Cheap accommodation and great location in the middle of a traditional chinese neighborhood (shops, market, food stalls) but just ten minutes walk from posh and Westernized Xintiandi. My room was very, very basic with a strong smell of smoke and not very clean and every time it rained there was water leaking in from the window.
Staff speaks only a few words in English, there are no cooking / breakfast facilities and noise is constant (people partying in their rooms, construction works, shouting from the houses across the alley, people shouting on the terrace).

Room Tip: Bring earplugs!

The price of this hotel was so good, and the location was better, it's near of the metro and supermarkets and you live for some days in a real chinese neighbourhood.
The room had everything we needed, the a/c worked perfectly and the room has an european bathroom with a door.

Approaching this hotel may worry those who are first time visitors to China. More traidtional type neighborhood that might be described by some as "quaint" and some as a "dive" . Fairly typical of Shanghai and safe, don't be put off by the look. Hotel is a few minutes walk to Laoximen subway, close to the bird/insect/flower market and the antique market. Lots of great food choices as well. Rooms are tired, needing some TLC, painting etc but clean. Most staff are happy to help. I would recommend this hotel to backpackers or anyone on a budget who can overlook the cosmetics.

Room Tip: Some 4th floor rooms are open to the outside off the roof terrace. not always best in the rain.

3min walk from EXIT no.3, Laoximen (old west gate) station. The room is clean enough, good facilities for the price (a hair dryer, Wi-Fi available). The lift and the corridor smell strange since there is a butcher in the ground floor, but the room doesn't smell at all. No restaurants around hotels but several casual eating places and convenience stores. English speaking staff.

Room Tip: Ask a room with a window. A room facing the street is a bit noisy, so you may request a room in the...

I gave overall rating as : poor as it is cheap hotel and you can't expect too much but in general, for the price you pay (few) you get absolutely acceptable conditions, so don't be afraid of this hotel.
You have flat TV, air condition, Internet - free wifi and free wired Internet. Besides you have bottled water for free - and they replace it if it's used, this may be a small and simple thing, but I was happy with it, especially because weather in Shanghai (in August) is horrible and before I was staying in different hotel (more expensive one) where they charged me for bottled water.

Just few steps away from subway station - great!!!
Also not far from confucius temple - worth to visit.
Besides that you have big supermarket E-mart, close to subway station, where you can find whatever you need to drink and eat.

The hotel is located at typical (not nice smelling) chinese street and unfortunately very loud.
My room was at the street side, I had to use stoppers otherwise I wouldn't be able to sleep from around 4am.

Room Tip: Try to get room not on the street side, it may be less noisy.

I stayed here because the professional pictures made it look so nice, but it was a bit run down, at least the room I stayed in. The TV was basically all in Chinese, except for the International channel (which broadcasts in English but is intended for a Chinese audience) and a CCTV news channel.
On the plus side, it was easy to find and very close to the metro. Shanghai is a wonderful city with tons of things to do; if you are just looking for a place to hang your hat this does the job--even if only barely.
