Reading the other reviews before I booked this hotel, I almost feel there is something strange going on! I can not understand all the positive comments, as this was not the place I arrived at.
A dark alley with a half closed gate even made the taxi driver a bit confused, I was met by a dark entrance with no proper reception. It was all quiet, and I felt I had arrived at ghost hotel...Got to my room that was nicely decorated (but had a strange smell). Asked to get some room service and was told I had to order before 21 to get some food - choice of 3 asian dishes and 3 international.
I could not get a glas of wine to my dinner, and the minibar was only filled with beer and sweet drinks. The english was very poor of the staff, and there was no english tv channels. The area outside was NOT surrounded by any restaurants as other contributors claim, there was one english pub outside the hotel, that was it. Dark and not a very suitable area travelling by myself for business. I had no choice but to move out and find another hotel - 5 nights in this place would have been a very bad experience. The hotel is also under renovation, there was a note in my room saying sorry if I would find the building noise disturbing - happy I did not find out!

Room Tip: Make sure the renovation of the hotel is done before you book any room!

This is really great hotel in truly great location. The rooms are terrific and the overall atmosphere is great. Breakfast is delicious and the bar a delight (the onely place i've found in asia actively promoting whisky mac ;). The staff are very friendly and helpful and the owner hands on in the best sense of the phrase. Walk out of the drive and you are in a stone's throw of atmospheric streets, wonderful food and late night fun. If you are looking for really high quality with tons of character i'd heartilly recommend this hotel.

Met here for a business dinner, just like being in Paris, they didn't even have a Chinese menu, just a top class Parissienne set menu, French wines, real coffee etc. I had a guided tour and the rooms are lovely. The location is perfect for exploring the French concession and Zhaojiabang Road subway (lines 7 & 9). You may have trouble finding the hotel's own web site, its:

What a wonderful hidden gem. Elegant decor, welcoming ambiance and attention to detail make this boutique hotel a fabulous find. The staff are friendly and helpful. Our favorite hangout - the bar - is stocked with an excellent selection of fine whiskies and wines. We spent a lovely evening sipping scotch and meeting interesting characters from around the world. It's also convenient to surrounding bars, restaurants and boutiques or a quaint walk down the neighborhood's tree-lined streets. We'll certainly return for the afternoon tea.

They say first impressions count...and certainly they do from the moment you walk through the doors of The Imperial. What a wonderful experince from start to finish. After a long flight from Sydney to Shanghai this was the perfect getaway from the stress of business and travel. but my warmest congratulations to the hotel for their choice of personnel. They know how to really make you feel at home. The service was impecable and the rooms delightful. Thanks to everyone at The Imperial. See you soon

Stayed at this boutique hotel for 2 nights for my shanghai trip. Great location, close to everything. Love the room design, always wanted to stay at a french infused style hotel. The bed was really comfy, slept very well at night. and oh the bathroom, huge in size compare to alot of other 5 star hotels, so clean and nicely done. They also offer french style afternoon tea in their champagne bar, love the couches and sweet treats, perfect place with my girls in a relaxing atmosphere. Totally recommending !
