I stayed at the JW Marriott Shanghai for over 100 days (multiple trips) between April 2012 and February 2013. The staff is amazing and the service is exceptional. Breakfast is respectable, but very expensive. The executive lounge is one of the better Marriott lounges that I have been to in Asia. Great views, ok food, and one of the most relaxed Marriott lounge alcohol policies - beer served from 5:30 to 9 and wine until around 11:30. The location of the hotel is very convenient. Subway lines 1, 2, 8 are less than a 5 min walk to the hotel, and can you get you to most of the touristy places in the city under 15 minutes. The taxi stand at the hotel can have a wait up to 20 minutes around dinner time and on rainy days, but the wait is typically under 5 minutes. My biggest gripe with the JW is with the building itself. The building is in a major need of a refresh. It is obvious that the building was not waterproofed correctly, and almost all rooms smell like mold/mildew. The room finishes also look a bit tired.

I stayed at this hotel for 10 days in October of 2013.

Location
The hotel is located on Nanjing Road West, which is one of the most popular East-West roads. To the West is a fake market and further afoot luxury stores and the Golden Temple. To the West is the pedestrian section of Nanjing Road and the Bund (very long walk or decent cab ride). The biggest gem is that a block back from the hotel is a pet market. Would definitely suggest the walk.

Service
The hotel staff is extremely accomodating. I cannot

Rooms
Clean and well organized. New TVs, wired internet, large bathrooms. Bottled water. High quality furnishings and decorations. The suites are definitely much nicer than the normal rooms.

Food
I was there for a conference and ate all breakfasts in the Marriott Cafe and lunches in the ballrooms. The executive chef was trained in Northern Europe and excels in both local fare and Indian cuisine. I did not have an opportunity to try the other two restaurants in the hotel.

Breakfasts is a buffet consisting of local chinese cuisine, fruit, pastries, french toast, omelettes, etc. A very good variety of high quality foods. A little disappointed with the Eggs Benedict as only one day out of ten the egg wasnt hard boiled.

Lunches - I took lunches in the Ballrooms as part of a conference and lunches consisted of local cuisine, Indian, and some European dishes. I was thoroughly impressed with the Indian cuisine and not so much with the European dishes.

Dinner - In the Marriott Cafe dinner is also buffet style with a great spread. A mixture of European, Indian, and Chinese. You can expect whole cooked salmon, prime rib, and a great dessert selection. You can also get unlimited wine and beer for 70 yuan (~11-12 USD).

Value - Expect to pay New York prices for drinks and food in the hotel ($15 for a drink). The mini-bar in your room is also a joke. Internet is also pricey - join Mariott Rewards so you dont have to pay.

I stayed in the apartments section which I found to be rather impressive. On the 32nd floor with an amazing view across shanghai is extremely impressive. Staff we're extremely helpful, as you'd expect in most hotels of this stature. Service wise I couldn't complain ... My only criticism would be it's almost too large... Taking so long to get anywhere... Especially in the apartments you have to switch lifts on different levels, which I so found slightly annoying having many meetings etc. But that aside it's a fabulous hotel, the staff were amazing and the attention to detail in the design was outstanding.

While our bed request was not correct-through booking.com we had asked for two beds but that didn't translate to the hotel, so we got two rooms each with a king bed. But the junior suite was nice. The hotel is pleasant and the gym, steam room, sauna, hot tub were all a lovely bonus for early morning wake-up. Breakfast on the executive level was great with some gluten-free options for one of the guests and the staff were very kind-one even remembered our coffee and tea orders from the previous day.

This is one of my favorite JW in the region both for business and leisure. My family and I spent 10 days in Shanghai and couldn't ask for a better location. The reception was located in the 38th floor. The check in process went smoothly and received an automatic upgrade from my Marriott status. Unfortunately, we have to change room 2 times due to smoke and damp smells.

The hotel is centrally located in the business and shopping area. The subway station is within walking distance and there are tons restaurants in the surrounding areas: Xin Tian Di, Nanjing road, the Bund, etc.

The staff are very courteous, knowledgeable of the area, and attentive to your need. We visited one of the water town 2 hours outside of Shanghai and the concierge helped us in arranging a day rental w/ driver for 800 CNY.

Overall the stay was excellent despite some hiccups on the frist night. I will go back back to this hotel on my next vacation to Shanghai.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room facing the square.

I regularly stay at hotels worldwide 200+ nights a year. I'm a platinum member with IHG and SPG. I've just recently made Gold with Marriott. I recently stayed at JW Marriott in Hangzhou and was mightily impressed with that one. That was one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in. This JW Marriott Shanghai at Tomorrow Square was good but I felt it has room to improve. Overall, I feel the stay was nice, room was nice, lounge was nice but a bit packed daily. Breakfast is good but service personnel could be more attentive. Doorman should be more polite to guests especially when they need help to get a taxi cab. Concierge should be more thorough in explaining about the hotel shuttle which takes guests to the bund and a few other touristy areas. We did not know anything about the shuttle until we saw a poster even though we had talked to the concierge multiple times about sites to visit covered by the shuttle. In any event, I'd still like to say that this is a very nice property and our stay was pleasant. Perhaps I'm a bit spoiled by the previous experience in Hangzhou but indeed if every JW Marriott could learn from Hangzhou the whole level of customer satisfaction may move up a notch...

Room Tip: The reason why there are so many people taking advantage of the lounge is because it is worth it.

Food was good, service was average, but the view around sunset was excellent. Easy to get to and prices not too bad. Chinese red pork was excellent. Another place that serves western food but doesn't understand starters should come before a main.
