JW Marriott is a higher end, very nice and luxurious hotel right in the middle of Nanjing Lu area, which is the main shopping road within Shanghai. Walking towards the right into Nanjing Lu (East) will take you to the Bund where you can see the beautiful colonial buildings with Pudong across the river. Walking towards the left into Nanjing Lu (West) you will come to higher end stores such as Isetan, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. The hotel is also very close by (15 minutes walk) to the Xintiandi area which is filled with trendy restaurants and some shops. 15 minutes walk away into Pu An road is a market which specialises in children's clothing and toys. The hotel is also close to the train station and a few stops away (on line 2 and Science Museum Station) underground is where the big market is located (Ya Tai Xin Yang market and Yada Pearl market) selling all types of bags, shoes, clothes, souvenirs, pearls, etc.

Breakfast spread is wonderful with a very good selection of western breakfast and Chinese dim sum and freshly made noodles. The rooms are spacious with bed comfortable beds and bathrooms very nice and clean. It is one of the tallest buildings in Shanghai and from the room, you can get a very good view of Shanghai city. The staff are attentive and friendly and no matter what number you dial, they will refer to you by name. The Mandara spa is also located within the hotel.

We arrived, received personal check-in and room check. First two rroms smelled like mold and mold was visible by the a/c vent. We were upgraded to a corner, city view room on the 57th floor. This room had no smell, no visible mold, and was extremely comfortable. The service was excellent. The best part was the executive-level lounge! Upgrade your room to executive if you can -- inc. food, drinks, internet, & more! We had a personal concierge, bfst, snacks most of the day, drinks all day (all kinds), and free computer/wifi. This lounge is on the 59th floor -- gorgeous! Beautiful room & bathroom! Bedding is wonderful! Great location in the city. 5 minute walk to: a health clinic w/ exceptional, fully trained massage service, subway, GREAT shopping, underground shopping, McDs, Museums, and a nice park.

I had booked a 527 square feet studio which was upgraded to a 775 square feet one-bedroom apartment overlooking People's Square. It was unbeatable value for the money! Great location, two swimming-pools, excellent service. Perfect.

The JW Marriott has the perfect location in Shanghai. The view from our room was spectacular. There was a little language barrier during check-in but overall it went smoothly. The term "single" bed threw us off. It means one bed and was actually queen size.

The hotel buffet is a little over priced. Dinner for four was over $200. That is high for a buffet.

The rooms were a good size, decorated very nicely and very quiet.

The staff was pleasant enough but I did not find them very friendly.

We stayed at the J W Marriott Hotel in Shanghai for five nights in May while visiting Expo 2010. The location was convenient to the metro, and right next to the beautiful People's Square (don't miss the Urban Planning Museum - fascinating, and contains an enormous model of Shanghai containing every building). It's also a good location for a stroll down Nanjing Road after dark. We used Marriott points for our stay. While the room was very nicely appointed, it wasn't as luxe or as large as I might have expected. Views from the high floors are very nice. We had breakfast in the dining room one morning (birthday treat) and it was absolutely lovely, albeit it rather pricey. The bathroom was nice, but there was an unfortunate design issue with the shower door. No matter how careful we were in the shower, there was always a large puddle leaking out onto the floor. Someone from the maintenance department promptly replaced the gasket around the door, but it appeared that the stone door saddle tipped outward rather than toward the shower, so there was little that could be done about it. While not a huge problem, it did make for a continual inconvenience. The desk must have noted from our passports that one of us had a birthday, and when we got back to our room in the evening, a piece of birthday cake was wrapped up on the desk. A very thoughtful touch.
