“Elegant hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2013

Okura Garden Hotel Shanghai -- Had a delightful stay here in mid-November. We'd stayed here 10 years ago for one night on business and were looking forward to a longer stay. The staff are helpful and unfailingly polite. The Business Center staff were very helpful -- they bought our train tickets for Xi'an and on to Pingyao as soon as they went on sale (which took a big load off the mind of one who buys airline tickets and makes hotel reservations months in advance) and gave us a very helpful little map of the blocks surrounding the hotel. The bell captain was also very helpful in making restaurant reservations (and writing taxi cards with the name in Chinese characters), explaining how to buy tickets for the subway, and how to use the train station. The breakfast buffet, included in our room rate, offered a good selection and nice flaky croissants, which we always appreciate, and good strong coffee -- served in their elegant Rose Cafe. Our room was elegant and very comfortable (I like a hard mattress), with a beautiful view of their garden, and the bathroom was spotless. If your non-smoking room smells a bit smoky, try for another. We also appreciated the water heater for tea and coffee. The hotel's public spaces are reminiscent of the 1920's French Club architecture, very tastefully done. It might seem that I've overused elegant in this review, but sitting here in their lobby, waiting for our 1855 train to Xi'an, that's the word that sums it up. We recommend the hotel highly.

A few tips: The no. 3 exit from the no. 1 (red) subway line is at the far SE end of the garden (which has no gates other than the 2 at the hotel entrance), so the subway is easily accessed, and the ticket machines have an English icon to touch. We really enjoyed Din Tai Fung (for dumplings) and Lost Heaven (for Yunnan cuisine), both of which are a 5-10 min taxi ride away. And, if you really want to experience Shanghai up close and personal, we HIGHLY recommend the ChinaCycle Tours' night tour for a thrilling experience (see reviews).

The Garden Hotel is a great choice for anyone visiting Shanghai. Staff was friendly, the room was clean and comfortable and breakfast was terrific. The gardens around the hotel make it a very unique property and it is a short walk to lots of bars and restaurants. The hotel has a distinct Japanese feel and, while some may think the mattress was too firm, I quite enjoyed it. This hotel met my every need.

Room Tip: Very close to the metro!

Perfect location, good hotel, clean rooms, friendly staff, restaurants a bit overpriced, very attentive staff at business-centre. A lot of shops and restaurants near, metro station just on the corner.

This hotel is situated just off the Huaihai road in the middle of the French Concession. Unusually for Shanghai, it has extensive grounds which you can walk round but it's a shame there is no outside seating. Rooms are very thoughtfully equipped in a style that is more traditional than modern minimalism. Although we were on a non-smoking floor, there was still a faint whiff of stale tobacco.

Room Tip: Views are good front or back but choose a high floor.

I have no idea how others on Trip Advisor claim this a five star hotel. Maybe 20 years ago. Its old, smells like smoke, beds are linens are hard and the rooms are completely outdated (dont believe me, get a picture of the AM/FM radio that is part of the nightstand!).

That said, I got a great rate on the room through the online sites. And the location is fairly good, in the French Concession area - with the subway about a 2 minute walk around the corner. All of the key tourist spots in the area are about a 5-10 minute taxi ride or 1-2 stops from the subway. The service was quite good.

I would say this is more of a 3.5 star hotel. Make sure you ask for a high floor with a city view.

Room Tip: ask for a high floor with city view

Okura Garden in Shanghai is an older hotel property in a city where many of the hotels are so new that they still smell of fresh paint. Because of the competition, the property does offer great value for money in an expensive city like Shanghai.

Being part of the famous Okura chain of hotels in Japan, it offers many of the positive attributes that you would find in any major hotel in Tokyo. Namely:
1) Fanatical level of cleanliness (see pictures attached)
2) Heated toilet seat with automated bidet (see picture)
3) Drinking water from the taps - which is a real blessing if like me, you try to avoid the free bottled water in the room due to the waste that it inevitably creates
4) Outstanding quality Japanese food at their second floor Japanese restaurant - Shan Li
5) On the third floor you will find a Japanese style Gym where you see a few pieces of cardio equipment, a set of free weights and plenty of exercise mat space. The design is reminiscent of the Tokyo Okura hotel's gym before they renovated a couple of years ago.
6) In the changing room of the Gym you will find a sizeable Japanese style Onsen(Japanese Communal Spa/Bath) when you can soak your aching muscles and wash off the grime after a day of shopping/exploring/meetings. It is also equipped with a cold water pool and a large sauna which cold easily sit 20 people. Massages can be arranged at the gym counter.

An additional feature that is very rare in Shanghai is that the property has a 2-3 football field sized garden which is part of the property(see attached
picture).
In a city like Shanghai where green space is quickly eliminated in favor of office buildings or condos, it is a joy to look out your window at a lush green garden or to be able to jog in the garden in the morning as you are trying to retune your body clock to an Asian time zone.

The hotel is 5 minutes walk from Huaihai Road which is the Michigan Ave of Shanghai.

Being a Japanese hotel, there are some negatives that you have to bear in mind:
1) Unless you are a smoker, always ask for a non-smoking room. The hotel does allow smoking in some of its rooms, so make sure you confirm that you have a non-smoking room at check in. I am allergic to cigarette smoke and the reception staff accidentally gave me a smoking room some years ago and I could barely breathe when I opened the door to the room.
2) Unfortunately, this hotel still allows smoking in its outlets so be sure to ask to be seated in a non-smoking section of the hotel restaurant that you are in. This applies to the Rose Cafe, Shan Li the Japanese restaurant on the second...
3) The deco in the hotel has a tendency to rub people the wrong way. I would describe it as stuck in the Japanese kitschy phase when that was the rage and it could certainly do with some refreshing, which is what many of the Japanese hotels have done in recent years in Tokyo.

I think that a good stay in the hotel is possible if the expectations are right and you know what you want. The hotel does offer great value for money and is a little slice of Japan in an ultra modern Chinese city.

The rest of the review is an intro on how to enjoy the Japanese Onsen in the hotel and you can skip over if you are not interested:-

For those who have never done Japanese Onsen before, the Okura Garden is a great place to try it out.
Don't be intimidated by the attendants in the changing room, these gruff old men will not bother you at all if you pretend to know what you are doing.
Undress in the locker room area of the Onsen and put your stuff in the locker.
Wrap yourself in a large towel because the Onsen is a strictly no-clothing area, you will also find a supply of smaller towels in the locker area and pick one up
Be sure to take a shower before you dip in the Communal Bath.
When clean, start off by splashing some hot water from the bath on your feet to get them used to the water temperature.
When you feet are adjusted, dip both feet directly into the Bath and edge yourself into the bath bit by bit until you are fully immersed.
The little towel comes to good use here as you can use it to scrub yourself down.
You probably don't want to stay in the bath longer than 5-10 minutes at a stretch.
After stepping out of the bath, some people feel a little faint, so be careful.
I usually take a quick shower, towel dry and leave after.
But for those folks who are really hard core, there is a sofa area outside the Onsen area where die-hards can rest and lower their body temperature so that they can go back in and start all over again.

I hope you enjoy the Onsen.

If you have found this review helpful, please indicate. Thank You.

Room Tip: Choose a non-smoking floor if you are a non-smoker.

Okura Garden Hotel, is a fantastic choice for Shanghai - stayed on work in June for about a week. impeccable service, a great breakfast and a fabulous view made this a great pick. also high speed wifi courtesy a deal with DoCoMo is an added benefit. Great central location as well very close to touristy locations, pubs, bars, restaurants as well the main convention center. would definitely recommend!
