Was put in the Westin Shanghai Bund Center for a conference. It is exactly what it claims: a terrific five-star business hotel (that is so well set-up that it could also be a five-star romantic getaway). Superlatives in every category. The bathroom could have comfortably housed a family of five. Particularly loved the old-style bath tub on feet -- raised from the floor with a blue light glowing under it like a souped up street racer (yes, it's hard to imagine but, trust me, it was pretty nifty). The "rainfall" shower was Amazonian. And, unlike the other 20+ Chinese hotels I have stayed in, everything in the bathroom actually worked correctly. Not a single leak, not a single wobbly towel rail, not a single clogged drain.

The room itself was terrific. Ditto bed.

Restaurant? Good. (With the early evening food in the Executive Lounge being terrific.)

Staff? Terrific.

Downside? Crap view from my window (but wasn't there for the view so didn't care).

A word about the location is appropriate. Visually this modern building (on postcards, it's the building topped by a "crown") anchors one end of the Bund. In fact, however, it is a five minute walk to the waterfront. Hence the lack of a view mentioned above. I was on the 12th floor in a room facing away from the river. The view was mostly looking down on shabby rooftops. If the view is your thing, make sure you go high and face the river. Possibly that might help.

There is nothing that the hotel can control about the other downside to staying here. In the five minute walk to the Bund I was opportuned at least once every hundred yards by pimps sidling up and offering massages, girls, boys. Interestingly, the (undercover) police seem to have successfully banished the pimps from the heaving mass of humanity on esplanade itself (which made a welcome relief to my previous evening visits to the Bund). Unfortunately they now seem to congregate on the side streets leading to the Bund, taking the pleasure out of an evening stroll to see the magnificent architecture and lights of the Bund and Pudong.

Room Tip: If you are lucky enough to have access to the Executive Lounge, eat breakfast there. Almost as much...

Having travelled extensively and experienced hotel in many countries, Westin on the Bund in Shanghai is such a pleasant experience when compared to many other hotels. The rooms, especially the Heavenly bed is so comfortable. The Bathrobes are simply wonderful. Food is great and most importantly the people are awesome Nothing is difficult and anything is possible.
Not to be missed is the famous Westin Shanghai Sunday Brunch! Thanks to the hotel I have gained a few kilos already...Not happy!
The management is doing a great job keeping this standards very high and Hats Off to them.
My favourite hotel for a long time to come!

Room Tip: Dont miss the sunday brunch is you happen to be there on a sunday

Stayed here as part of a Viking River Cruise. Our group was placed in the Execurtive Tower.
The rooms are outstanding. Bathroom is very large with a separate bathtub and shower.

Complimentary bottled water and an orange were nice touches.

For some reason they don't leave enough towels, but they are delivered quickly when asked.
Be careful with the light switches. One of them turns on a red light outside the door and then the room is not made up.

Buffet breakfast was very good, but the buffet dinner was a little disappointing. As strange as it may sound, there was lots of food, but little to eat.

Room Tip: Try to get into the Exceutive Tower. Starwood preferred membership should help.

I stayed at this hotel for 13 nights and interestingly not once did anyone call me by name which i found most unusual for hotels in Asia. Despite visiting the club lounge at least twice a day during my stay the only person to recognise me was a training intern who was working at the hotel for 3 months. Sara had a perky smile and lovely manner. Perhaps my expectations in a big city like shanghai were too high for a personal touch, however having lived in this city and being instantly recognizable by my flower seller, tailor, and local barista amongst many others I was waiting everyday for a greeting that never happened. All other aspects of service are very good and the staff in the fitness centre deserve a special mention as they were friendly and very helpful. Other great features are that the rooms are very large and beautifully decorated. The bathrooms are also very sizable and well appointed with the fittings and amenities. The breakfast and cocktails in the club lounge were high quality and I would definitely recommend choosing a club room. The view of the pearl tower from the executive club are great. I have stayed in this hotel at different times over the past 8 years and still think it of world class and highly recommend due to the rooms and location to the Bund being only 2 or 3 short blocks away.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the grand tower and choose a room with club access.

The Westin is conveniently located within walking distance to the Bund, the Yu Garden and Chenghuang Temple (around 15-20 min), and the Nanjing Road shopping district (10-15 min). Although it was built 10 years ago and shows some age in terms of its conditions, it has remained one landmark building along the Bund and can be easily identified from distance. The golden lotus on top is quite visible at night. Room is relatively small, but comfortable enough and adequate for one person. Staff is polite and efficient, but not particularly warm. Breakfast buffet is ok in terms of variety and quality. Have to be careful with water in the room - the small free bottles are located in a bathroom corner, and the big visible one with a tag in the room (mine was on TV stand) actually costs around USD14.

Not too far from the heart of the Bund. The rooms were comfortable - everything was exactly what you'd expect from a Westin. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and fresh. The bar was relaxing although over AC'd in the 95 degree temp outside.

From the car that met me at the airport to the room upgrade, my arrival experience was excellent. The suite was beautifully done - lots of marble with tiger eye maple paneling, rain forest shower head, enough counter space for my things and the Heavenly bed. Breakfast was included and was Western/Asian buffet with the chef cooking omelets. Sliced bananas in an orange juice were a standout. Location is a couple blocks away from the river promenade, historical area and markets. A quiet oasis in a city that is anything but quiet.
