Was put in the Westin Shanghai Bund Center for a conference. It is exactly what it claims: a terrific five-star business hotel (that is so well set-up that it could also be a five-star romantic getaway). Superlatives in every category. The bathroom could have comfortably housed a family of five. Particularly loved the old-style bath tub on feet -- raised from the floor with a blue light glowing under it like a souped up street racer (yes, it's hard to imagine but, trust me, it was pretty nifty). The "rainfall" shower was Amazonian. And, unlike the other 20+ Chinese hotels I have stayed in, everything in the bathroom actually worked correctly. Not a single leak, not a single wobbly towel rail, not a single clogged drain.
The room itself was terrific. Ditto bed.
Restaurant? Good. (With the early evening food in the Executive Lounge being terrific.)
Downside? Crap view from my window (but wasn't there for the view so didn't care).
A word about the location is appropriate. Visually this modern building (on postcards, it's the building topped by a "crown") anchors one end of the Bund. In fact, however, it is a five minute walk to the waterfront. Hence the lack of a view mentioned above. I was on the 12th floor in a room facing away from the river. The view was mostly looking down on shabby rooftops. If the view is your thing, make sure you go high and face the river. Possibly that might help.
There is nothing that the hotel can control about the other downside to staying here. In the five minute walk to the Bund I was opportuned at least once every hundred yards by pimps sidling up and offering massages, girls, boys. Interestingly, the (undercover) police seem to have successfully banished the pimps from the heaving mass of humanity on esplanade itself (which made a welcome relief to my previous evening visits to the Bund). Unfortunately they now seem to congregate on the side streets leading to the Bund, taking the pleasure out of an evening stroll to see the magnificent architecture and lights of the Bund and Pudong.
