“Service is poor”
Reviewed 29 March 2014

Reservation was suppose to include breakfest and wifi however when I checked in the very rude manager "Marc" at the front desk said it didn't and proceeded to try to charge me almost double the price of the room in order to get these included. I then asked to speak to his manager and he rudely would not provide me his supervisors contact info. I booked 7 days but will consider leaving sooner.

i often stay at this hotel. First, the location at the heart of the French District has no equivalent in Shanghai, especially when you stay at the 22d floor.
The front desk staff is polite and speak good English, 2 exceptional points in Shanghai
the breakfast is one of the best in town, same for meals
The rooms are perfectly clean and the renovated ones are impressive… but i prefer the old ones located at the top floor
The housekeeping does not disturb you when there is the sign no disturb
… and the spa is wonderful
The only negative point is the music. the hotel plays ridiculous parodies of classical music, i kept on complaining but they never changed their music since 7 years… therefore, be prepared to wear your ipod shuffle if you want to survive this very painful experience… how can music be outdated and ridiculous? this negative point is unfortunately the worst of around 50 hotels i know in Shanghai.. especially a pity because the music of the health club is good and changes from time to time
However, keep in mind all the good points… and see my scores,
Overall, you will have a real 5 stars experience and never regret the very little price you may sometimes pay if you are wise enough to come in winter or summer.
for tennis lover, it is supposed to be also one of the best in town, but i do not practice
i prefer staying in my spa, watching the beautiful view of the French district, or eating one of their delicious buffet of fresh food from all over the world

Perhaps the finest hotel in Shanghai. Never a problem in the many years I have stayed at this hotel.

Whether it be Stan at the Concierge Service, Cecilia - Azure Bar Manager, Jessie - Manager of the California Restaurant, or Alice at 4th Floor Business Lounge, all your needs are taken care of. The biggest attribute of the hotel is the quality of the staff.

The hotel itself has very good rooms.
The new Australian chef ensures only the freshest and finest food is served.

Nice big rooms and very willing service food. A great pool (full size and in a separate building) and a brilliant gym - very large and part of the tennis centre. Stayed in club room which was nice and the club itself was nice too. Breakfast a bit limited but sufficient for me.

The Regal is a good option for a stay in Shanghai. For tourists, it is important to note that it is not in close walking distance from most of the popular sights. That said, it is close to the Hengshan subway station, and the subway is fairly easy to use (I would NOT recommend using the metro during rush hour unless you are used to how crowded it gets in major cities--I like the adventure of it, but it can be quite intimidating, not t mention frustrating for those who like orderly queues).

The hotel is in a great neighborhood. You are in walking distance of a large number of restaurants and clubs. Every so often, you run into a stretch of street that is sycamore-lined--it is really quite beautiful. And it is clean and safe. There is some shopping in this area, but not enough to make that the draw to this hotel. On the other hand, it is not crowded like the area around Nanjing street, and it is a nice blend of old and new Shanghai.

The rooms are clean and modern: comfortable bed with pillows of different fluffiness, easy to control temperature, quiet, and wireless is available (though a bit slow for my tastes). The rooms have that oh-so-Chinese abundance of ways to control the lighting in the room. And the shower was impressive (great hot water, both over-head rain and regular shower head, large tub). There is a free hot water kettle with instant coffee or tea available. I didn't use the mini-bar, but it has a decent range of high-priced items. (You would be better off walking to one block to get snack and drinks, including wine, beer, and liquor at the convenience stores).

The breakfast buffet is a nice mix between east and west, and importantly, it actually changes a bit from day to day. I would give this an "A" grade.

Good exercise room (many treadmills and bikes, as well as decent weights) and recreation available, though it is shared with non-hotel members and is really geared more towards them (the signage is not that good so you have to work to find things, the foreign language ability of the staff is adequate, but not great).

I didn't eat on the premises for any meal other than breakfast, so I can't comment on the food more generally.

My only complaint about the Regal is that both times that I called reception no one picked up. I had to resort to taking the elevator down to the lobby instead.

Room Tip: Try to something above the twelfth floor on the east side. You will likely have a view of the pear t...

I have been staying at the Regal many times for several years. This hotel proposes very fair price in a great location. Breakfast is good, not amazing but you'll find everything you need for a good start. Bar is not very fancy but there are plenty of places to go to in the neighborhood for dinner or for a drink.
