For me the key thing in any hotel is the comfort of the beds. In China a firm but not rock like mattress is a rarity. So I really appreciated the bed in the Central Hotel. In addition, the good location Is a plus as is the good service and cleanliness of the hotel. It's worth checking the rate when you book as I got a very good deal.
Only minor niggles I was put into a smoking room at first as the receptionist didn't ask. But that was quickly sorted out. Also no coffee or milk in the room. Kettle and teabags provided but only if you like tea without milk.

Do NOT stay here. There are concerts outside on Nanjing East Road on a daily / nightly basis, and you WILL be kept up by it unless you are on the 20th floor or above, and in that case, you will have to be in a smoking room. Somehow the sound is even more amplified in the rooms than when you are actually walking in the streets.

Room Tip: Higher floor to avoid the concert noise.

We wanted a centrally located hotel with a non-smoking room. We were very pleasantly surprised how beautful our room was on the 13th floor. It had an unusual shape, which I enjoyed, and plenty of room. Marble bathroom with separate tub and nice amenties. I am very sensitive to smoke and was quite concerned, but if there had been smokers in the room before, it was well aired out. (I know the non-smoking label can be meaningless in some hotels in China.) The bed was very comfortable with nice linens. The staff was also very attentive and polite. The concierge tried to be helpful, but many of my questions were not the standard type (Impressions Lake Show in Hangzhou, English language bookstore, etc) and he couldn't quite help with those. Thankfully the internet is free so I discovered that Shanghai's best foreign language bookstore was just 2 blocks away. Also, 2 blocks down Jiujiang Road toward people's square, on Guizhou street, is Jamaica Coffee, which has some nice Western breakfast options that are cheaper than the hotel. We enjoyed the easy walk to the Bund, People's square, and Nanjing Lu.

The Central Hotel definitely puts you in a great position just off the Nanjing pedestrian street, and within walking distance of the Bund and other sites. The room was large with the expected amenities. One drawback was a rather unpleasant smell in the shower that was echoed in a couple of corridors in the building. Staying on the 11th floor, the noise from the streets below were audible but not invasive. Desk staff were helpful and polite, however the concierge's desk were not the most proactive in their role. Worth staying at if you can find a reasonable deal, with the Howard Johnson as a more modern establishment available next door of you can't.

This hotel is very UPMARKET ...new,modern,clean with marble everywhere, at very reasonable price (would stay there again )..The Shopping Mall, the shopping centre and The Bund are all an easy stroll from the Hotel. The rooms are well appointed, everything you need was supplied including free internet. The staff were extremly helpful and the Concierge arranged for the the Bullet Train tickets to Beijing to be delivered to the hotel for us (the language barrier caused us trouble at the ticket office).
Everything at this Hotel was of High Quality.

This is a great hotel! I often stay at the Peace Hotel at the end of Nanjing Road on the Bund which is in adsolutely splendid but when I'm here in summer I prefer the location of his hotel - very close to the metro line I use and just a block off the pedestrian part of Nanjing Road. This visit I stayed in an executive deluxe room and could not have been more comfortable (not even at the Peace). The room has everything needed for comfort and convenience - space, great lighting, work area, relaxing area, super bathroom, huge cosy bed. The staff are helpful and charming. Only one problem. At the end of the day I like to relax with a glass of chilled, dry white wine .....no chance in this hotel. After opening and tasting two bottles from two excellent French wine areas ....and finding both undrinkable (the Shanghai heat) and not being able to explain this to anyone (I think they thought I didn't like the wine), I was very happy to find that Bar 505 at the Sofitel Hotel across the road has an excellent selection of wines that have been properly stored and professionally presented. BUT the Central is a lovely hotel :-)

I visited Shanghai with my husband for business matters and we stayed at Central Shanghai hotel for three nights on the 13th floor. I chose this hotel because of the good travelers’ reviews combined with its good price. Now I can say that it is a really good hotel, well situated exactly as the other travelers has mentioned.
You could buy tickets for the 24 hours city sightseeing bus inside the hotel and pick up this bus just around the corner. There was a very good information computerized desk giving you all the details you needed (for example how much you should pay to a taxi). A taxi was always waiting outside the hotel.
Breakfast was rich and it had various tastes for everyone.
Sauna was included in the price, but the men’s sauna was more complete than the woman’s. Maybe this happened because we wanted to do sauna at the same time and they had to separate us.
Rooms were very well equipped and staff was polite (there was even an iron in the wardrobe, but also the laundry service was a good one). The only negative for us was the very big head pillows.
Communication with Chinese people was very difficult because of their Chinese accent in English and we lost valuable time to understand each other.
Also, although the surrounded hotel district was full of life during the day, at night it was a bit dangerous to circulate alone. All shops closed at 10:00 pm and then you could not find anything else, not even for a drink, but only homeless people sleeping on the benches.
I would recommend this hotel to everyone. Good value for money.
