“A Great Staycation”
Reviewed 24 January 2012

Chinese New Year with Fireworks!!
Stayed in a recently refurbished room. On the 60th floor. Corner room with 180 Views over the river. Views into the heart of Puxi!
Comfortable. Warm. Just a delight.
Fabulous Bathrooms - a tub for two!
Piano Bar with great cocktails.
Grill with some good Aussie Steaks.
Breakfast on the first day was a bit sad. 10am Nothing Left... fight for the last piece of watermelon! Should have stayed in my room!
Second day was much better... MUCH better.
OVER all a great stay!
Well price - right next to IFC in Pudong!
Recommended!

The service was great as was the view. The Executive Lounge dinner appetizers were fair, but the breakfast was not as good as expected.

I feel like this hotel relies on their view while allowing other things to slide- our carpet in our room was very stained for example. The service overall was very good though.

While the rooms are not too old from US standards, this is Shanghai, where a new hotel opens every month. I would expect a little more from this hotel.

I'm usually a Starwood hotels guy, but I sort-of stayed here by accident. Stranded in Shanghai by a missed airline connection, I remembered a client event at the breathtakingly beautiful Park Hyatt. Mistakenly though, I booked the Grand Hyatt instead. I was surprised how inexpensive it was, until I realized my mistake.

In any case, I was traveling alone, so it was fine. I generally prefer to stay on the other side of the river, but with just one short night, I wanted view...which either Hyatt has in spades. My river view room had a panoramic view of the river and the iconic Pearl Tower (from both the room and the bathtub).

The room was fine, but maybe a little tired. Nothing really wrong with it, but not the up-to-date styling you'd probably find at the newer Park Hyatt.

From a location standpoint, Pudong is corporate high-rise land. You'll have to cross the river to find old-town, Yu-gardens and the "antiques" market. I think, next time, I'll try the Park Hyatt or go back to the Westin (which I really liked in the past).

We visited this hotel in January 2012, not as residents but just as day guests.

On arrival I was blown away by the views in the reception area, it's like something from a movie! Then I realised this was 'only' the 50th floor, and we were going all the way up to the 87th!

When we got to Cloud 9 for a cocktail we were struck by how classy the design was, very Art Deco. I could go on forever about the views but will simply say they blow any other hotel view I've ever had right out of the water!

My only gripe would be the service in the bar. We were treated like royalty by the staff until we got the the bar then it all fell apart. The staff were apathetic and seemed totally disinterested in serving us. Had to ask for the table to be cleared, for a menu, for the bill etc. Put a downer on the visit but I'd still go back next time for the ambience and views.

This is the highest hotel I've ever stayed in. Located way, way up in the Jin Mao Tower, one of the good parts is that if you arrive at night, when you wake up in the morning you get a stunning view of Shanghai, which is sometimes marred by the smog for which China is now so infamously known.

Check-in was no problem. My room was modern and clean, the bed comfortable. The bathroom was stylish and very nice. I had a Grand Club Room, which offers advantages, but costs more, of course.

This hotel is a good one when it comes to location, being near several important business venues. It is in a nice part of the city, so if you want to see old Shanghai, you have to get away from the hotel and start wandering around in the back alleys and side streets, or go down to the fabled Bund.

I patronized several restaurants and bars in the hotel. All were fine except The Grill. Properly attired, I walked in there, got a table, and then sat there for 15 minutes waiting for a server to at least give me a menu, which never happened, so I left. Just walked out, and no one tried to stop me. I mean, what gives? I liked the Cloud 9 bar, which has fine views and martinis.

The car service was very good from the airport and back again.

Shanghai is a well-off business destination, so prices are high at the hotel, which has 555 rooms & suites.

I would not hesitate to go back to the Grand Hyatt Shanghai, which is a good 4-star hotel despite the 5-star billing.

Room Tip: If you are afraid of heights, skip this hotel or don't look out any windows.

I stayed there for couple of nights including the new year eve. Check-in process was smooth and because i reached a bit early & my room wasn't ready, i got upgraded to River view (absolutely breathtaking views). While the view was breathtaking, rooms needs some face lift. Couldn't believe the TV wasn't flat screen. TV remote control was in a bad shape. Carpet in the room needs some serious cleaning also. WOW part was the bathroom, in fact it was bigger than the room & top notch. Room service was great too particularly the american breakfast. Cloud 9 bar on the 86th floor was a disappointing though. Pricey drinks and no space to sit with poor lighting. May be because it was new year eve. I tried the grand cafe as well in the lobby and apart from the views, it was an average experience. Liked their initiative to celebrate new year eve with free champagne but having it in a patio was disappointing. They should have chose something with great views (Cloud 9 or Grand Cafe). Location of the hotel is a great plus with all major attraction just 5-10 minutes away on foot. Not sure whether i would like to try the hotel again but at least it will always be in my consideration list.

Room Tip: Ask for River View room but no connected rooms (Noise issue).

I stayed here over NYE and the experience was very mixed. First of all, the NYE party there was a complete mess. The countdown itself was poorly planned. They asked the president of the hotel to go up with about a minute to go but he just kinda stood there and didn't know what to say. It was quite awkward. He kept on say, "ok, we have a minute to go..." that was it. Then the countdown itself was horrible, they were playing music and then with about 7 seconds to go, they threw up the countdown and quickly counted down to 0. For a top notch hotel, I would have expected the whole thing to be much better planned and organized. To the room itself. It was very nice and big but it had a 20-some inch CRT TV!! It was horrible! In this day and age, for a 5 star hotel, who still uses CRT TVs?? Even if my room was not the top notch ones, there's no excuse it should have a CRT TV! Everything else was good though, the service, the employees and the rest of the room were all very nice. Bed is nice and comfy. Location is alright, its about 10 minute walk from the subway and the ifc mall. The view was average even when you get a River View room b/c not all are facing the Bund. I'd say book this if you get a good deal, else try Park Hyatt or the Ritz.
