“Horrible!”
Reviewed 27 March 2013 via mobile

When you pay that kind of money for a hotel, you expect certain standards. This was one of my worst stays with the Hyatt group.

The rooms are old and makes you feel cramped. The furniture looks 20 years old! The toilet is actually better than the bedroom. I can't believe I gave up the Penninsula to stay at this hotel! If the Penninsula is a 10 then this is a 5.

To make things worse, I was asked if I wanted an upgrade to a bund view room for a an extra charge during check in and I said yes. What a scam! I had to peep out the corner of the window just to see a small portion of the bund.

The food is also highly overpriced.

I will never stay at this hotel again. Everyone who is planning to stay here, please don't waste your money.

Dear Guest,

Warm greetings from Grand Hyatt Shanghai and thank you for your valuable time of sharing your experiences with us.

First of all, please accept our sincere apologies for the unpleasant experience you had during your recent stay with us. Your comments about the room facility condition and food price have brought to our attention. Our hotel actually is undergoing an immense refurbishment and we do have certain floors completed with this project. The new rooms are of brighter ambiance, with new bed, new carpet and new recreational facilities.

As always, we highly value any and all feedbacks from our guests and yours were no exception. Taking this opportunity, we would like to thank you again for sharing your experience and thoughts with us, and earnestly look forward to having the pleasure to welcome you again when your next return to Shanghai.

Stay in this hotel gave us other unique experiences since we were placed in the 80th floor, which we never expected before. I was not realized that this hotel is one of the highest buildings in the city, and located from 54th to the 85th floor (the rest of the floors are offices).
We were offered this room since have the view facing the river and the Bund, and have wider glass windows.. It is a very nice view from this room!
Near the hotel is a mall called IFC, which only 5 minutes walk.
Hotel location is not far from the tourist places, can get a taxi to Xintiandi, or to the Bund for around 20-25 minutes.
The hotel staff are very nice and friendly. The club lounge has a very good food and also very nice view. One of the best hotel we've ever stayed!

Room Tip: Choose rooms facing the river and the Bund.. the higher, the better :-)

The company I served before located in JIn Mao Tower and I worked there for couple of years. The company held many events at Grand Hyatt Shanghai and I myself also stayed at Hyatt for couple of days back in 2010 during CEO's visiting Shanghai.

I have to say the overall service is very good and the buffet is delicious. The room is relatively small comparing with Shangri-la's, but you could totally enjoy the fantastic view of the bund at Puxi side from its 87's bar. You shouldn't miss booking the room facing Huangpu river (especially the bund side), that would be a great experience staying in Shanghai.

However it'll be a bit difficult to grab a cab since the tower locates in Lujiazui area which lots of taxi drivers wouldn't like to drive in during peaking time, taking metro line 2 would be an alternative option if you are in rush.

Nowadays, more and more skyscrapers are arising in Lujiazui area. You could be able to find many restaurants either in Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC, 5 mins from Jin Mao Tower) or in International Financial Center (IFC, 7 mins from Jin Mao Tower). If you wanna try local cuisine, you can walk a bit further to Super Grand Mall, all types of Chinese cuisines to be found on 5F-8F.

After the dinner, you should not miss the great view you shall have from Shanghai World Financial Center, there are bars on 91F & 93F which are called the highest bars in the world. There is a jazz band playing jazz music on 93F which starts the show after 9:30pm.

There is a bar named Paulanar located along Bin Jiang Avenue (bund in Pudong side, close to Shangri-la). If you walk there, it's around 15-20 minutes. It'll be fantastic to sit outside the bar facing the Huangpu river and enjoy PUxi's night view in summer.

Possibly my favourite hotel in the world.

Had a jaw dropping corner suite with two whole walls of glass overlooking the city.

Its a bit odd when it is misty, but unbelievable when clear. Not one for guests suffering from vertigo!

City is great fun.

I stayed here over the weekend during a business trip. it is a fantastic hotel. wonderful room, great and courtious staff. excellent Regency Club. This is one of my favorite hotels and would definitely stay here again.

One negative point, and this is not particular to this hotel only. Being a diamond member, I approached the designated counter in the lobby on the 45th floor. When they realized I was a Diamond member, they sent me up to the Club level concierge on the 83rd floor. they checked me in to a room on the 68th floor.
I would want a speadier check-in process instead of sending me up and down the hotel. Why have a designated diemond counter in the lobby if it is not really being used?

The views from our connecting rooms, the restaurants and the lobby are amazing. Rooms are good-sized, bathrooms are large and very nice. I agree with comments from other travelers that the beds are a disappointment - hard and uncomfortable. Hard beds are common in China, but many of the international hotel chains are now providing better mattresses. I would have hoped to find these in the Grand Hyatt. That said, the service was quite good. We interacted with housekeeping on many occasions, requesting an ice pack for our daughter, sending out laundry and requesting shoe shine service. They were helpful and prompt. I will say that requesting any service took some doing - all requests go through the hotel operator or guest services on the phones and it always took quite a while to get through to the operator. I suppose the hotel may have been quite busy, but that constant wait for the phone connection got a bit tiresome.
Overall, it's a nice hotel and our second stay there in the past 6 months.

A very pleasing experience. First time on an 81st floor and simply an amazing opportunity to look DOWN on the closing New Year's Day fireworks! The hotel reception, on the 54th floor is a surprise and getting used to the variety of elevators to navigate the various levels is challenging but staff is on hand to guide you at each transfer point. The "cloud" lounge is a very pleasant location weather cooperating. Everything was well appointed and efficient, the only downside was the slow wireless Internet in my room addressed on pointing it out, but never perfect.
