“Good hotel, but beware of extra charges”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2011

I stayed in Jin Jiang for 4 nights and I am very satisfied with the experience. Location is at the edge of French concession, in which I was nto particularly interested but the intersection of two metro lines is nearby and it is a very short ride to the Bund or People's square, for example. The Cathay Garden building is nice and the rooms are very spacious, there is enough of space for rest and work, you have complimetary tea bags, tea pot, cups and kettle to make the tea. Bathroom is kept clean and has both shower and a bathtub.

Wifi internet comes for an extra charge of 900 RMB per day. Drinks int he lobby are also overpriced, prices are not displayed so it is better to check in advance if you want to order anything there.

I arrived aroyund 9 am in the mornign and the check in is at 2pm, but they arranged a room for me at 10 pm, which was great, especially after 12 hours flight.

Warning: I was placed in the non-smoking room on a non-smoking floor. There signs everywhere on this floor (5th) that non-smoking rules have to be strictly observed. When I asked the reception staff is it possible to move to a smoking room they said: we will just bring you an ashtray in the room. Was not a problem for me, but beware: if you ask for a non-smoking room you can end up in a 'non-smoking room' which will stink of smoke. In my experience, it is a problem with most of hotels in China.

Breakfast buffet included in the room price is lavish and has many choices of european, chinese, japanese and even indian food. You also get a big coffee or teapot at your table.

In general, very standard high quality hotel. Not cheap, but worth the price.

The hotel is huge with all types of rooms. We stayed in the Cathay Gardens. The room was spacious and had twin double beds which were very hard to leave as they were so comfortable. We had a problem with our tour booking while we were still in Australia and the hotel called the tour company a couple of times and sorted it out. My emails were answered in minutes. My silly husband left his credit card in the machine a couple of times and the hotel staff made sure we got it back. Customer service plus. We could use a lesson from them. The trees around the hotel are beautiful and the area was quiet but with a busy street life around. We ate at some fabulous Chinese cafes in the area and had the best dumplings in the world for $2.

Room Tip: Rooms facing into the lawn area are quiet.

We stayed 5 nights at the Jin Jiang at the beginning of our holiday in China. We had a spacious and well appointed renovated room on the 7th floor of the Cathay Building, the original 1920s building. Our room was exactly like the ones on the website, and the bed comfortable. Under artificial light there were a few marks on the carpet, and stains on the sofa, but these were barely visible in daylight and not a concern. We were on the garden side of the building, and weren't bothered by noise.

As others have said, the lobby area is a bit strange with no lounge area or bar, as a couple this didn't bother us. Breakfast service was efficient with an evident desire for a rapid turnover and a prompt finish. We caused some consternation on our second day by over sleeping and arriving for breakfast at 9.45. It was made very clear that breakfast finished at ten, and indeed the buffet was rapidly removed, and some of the furniture disassembled. We felt the room was probably required for other purposes almost immediately. The breakfast buffet itself was quite acceptable.

We ate in the Old Shanghai chinese restaurant in the hotel on our first evening, which was very well patronised by large family groups of chinese people, had a good atmosphere, good food and reasonable prices.

The hotel was an excellent choice for us. We liked being on the edge of the French Concession, much less hectic than other parts of Shanghai, and very pleasant to explore. There is a metro station nearby, and some good restaurants, both western and chinese. We are not into shopping, but there were some high end shops as well as cheaper ones in the neighbourhood. The Parkson department store nearby has a small supermarket in the basement for forgotten essentials.

The biggest disadvantage was the lack of free wifi in the hotel. We had to visit one of the numerous independent cafes in the area to get this. Free wifi at Starbucks and the like, and through the wifi hotspots on the street, requires a phone with a chinese simcard to receive the access passcode. It's an excellent service for residents, but no good for most tourists I imagine.

I took my 95 years old mother to visit her relatives in Shanghai with 6 family members. She cannot walk far and need wheelchair to get around. The reason that we decided on this hotel because each suite has 2 bedrooms + big sitting room + big dining room which can accommodate 10 people + a kitchen so that my mother can entertain her relatives in the suite where they will come with her favorite foods. To our surprise, there was no utensil in the cupboard to serve the food nor a Microwave to warm them but with one ccoking oven.We asked for dishes, plates, bowls, chopsticks. fork & spoon, but the Frontdesk personnel said that the management want us to order Room Service and have no policy to have foods from outside. I asked the Mnagement why do they advertise all these wonderful rooms in the suite if the policy is no cooking or not even warming food in the suite. After long and tedious negotiation (language barrier here), they reluctantly relented and lend us some utnsils. Another surprise, they refused to clear up and replace with clean one. (tips is neede to grease the palm) Their service attitude is unbelievable, moody face without a smile throughout our stay. What a difference a few years made on their service attitude. I wrote a comment to them to explain their policy and hoping for a response soon. Breakfast is acdequate. Lunch & Dinner at Old Shanghai Restaurant on the11th-F Cathay Bldg. is good. Make clear with the hotel management on what is offered before making reservation.

Room Tip: Higher floor would be better with a better view, we stayed on the 9th-F

I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights. The hotel sits in a park in the French Concession area of Shanghai. The service is excellent, the rooms are clean and up to date, and the beds are guaranteed to give you a great night's sleep. I stayed in the Cathay Building, which is a 13 storey Art Deco building built in the late 1920s. In fact, it was the first "skyscraper" in the city. It is well located -- close to the sights as well as transportation. The staff were helpful whenever I needed anything, from help with taxis and booking a flight to finding the address of a spa or restaurant. While Shanghai is known for its ultra modern architecture, this hotel hearkens back to another era. I also thought the price for the quality was good -- although it depends on which building you stay. I would stay here again.

This was the final stop on our tour throughout China. The hotel was located in a lovely area. Lots of shops and walking streets. The hotel was fine, but in time will not be memorable (either good or bad). There was nothing about this hotel that really stood out. It was clean and quiet. The breakfast was fine, but they would not allow us to take rolls out-- eventhough we were not eating in the dining room (we were late for an appointment).
The property is very large and confusing. It is also difficult to get in and out of the property if you are walking.
We did request a non-smoking room, but were placed in a smoking room. We smelled no residue in the room, but did get some whiffs of smoke that came into our room from the ventilation system on one morning.
