“After a 3 Year Renovation The Fairmont Peace is a Gem”
Reviewed 19 October 2011

The Fairmont Peace Hotel is an amazing example of what a hotel company can do by investing in restoration of a classic hotel. Fairmont even has a resident historian and a small museum/gallery in the hotel.

The hotel was originally built in 1929 when a Shanghai real estate magnet (Victor Sassoon) added 9 floors of an art deco hotel above his 2 story office building. He operated the hotel as the Cathay Hotel until 1950. When the communist party assumed control of China, they took over the Cathay hotel and a hotel across the street and operated the two buildings as “The Peace Hotel”. However, as the government was taking over the property, staff hid a lot of its more beautiful features by painting over some, installing false ceilings and walls. After running it as a government owned hotel for over 50 years it had deteriorated significantly. Fairmont bought the original building and closed the hotel from 2007 – 2010 for renovations. They did an amazing job, including finding and restoring the original stained glass ceiling of the lobby (see photo) above a false ceiling. The rooms are spacious and well appointed.

The location is superb as the hotel faces “The Bund” which is the original “downtown” area along the river with a host of classic buildings from the early 1900’s, which include the Shanghai financial district and stock exchange. The city recently completed a project that “sunk” most of the traffic into tunnels under the Bund leaving only 4 lanes for local traffic and a very wide pedestrian walkway/park along the river bank.

Room Tip: The interior rooms overlook a small courtyard but it is hard to determine the weather by looking out...

This was the most fabled hotel in Shanghai but it was in disrepair before the recent renovation. The renovation surpassed my expectation and brought back the grandeur of the old Shanghai. It now has all the modern conveniences of a 5 star hotel with well appointed rooms and huge suits. The location is superb and the panoramic view of the river and Pudong is probably the best in the city. The rich history, the beautiful decor and the classy ambiance (daily string quartet in the lobby and jazz bar) make the stay memorable.

A short walk from Bond, this hotel has proved a real surprise. A large elegant hall introduced us to the lobby where staff polite and very kind (especially Cherry Zhou, Guest Relations Officer) helped us in the check-in. The room was wonderful and well exposed. Clean, elegant, with a king size bed and pillows very comfortable and with a real Italian espresso machine. The bathroom, worthy of a great hotel which is Peace.
With a surcharge we were able to attend the "Gold Lounge." This is a discreet and elegant lounge where the staff is very efficient and very stylish catering. I recommend this hotel for those who want to stay with comfort and elegance in one of the most beautiful districts of Shanghai.

The most elegant hotel that I have ever stayed in. The only quibble is that the elevators are hard to operate. You have to use the proximity card and push the floor button at the same time.

Recently we stayed atthis wonderful piece of Art Deco architecture on our trip through China with Viking River Cruises. If you want to take a trip to the past this is the place to stay. The decor has been meticulously restored to the spendor that was 1920's Shanghai. The staff were more than accommodating. This was especially made obvious when the main restauarant was full with others from our tour. As a result the wait staff relocated us to the Executive Dining room where the original Art Deco furniture had been elegantly salvaged and reapohlstered with period materials. Wine selection in teh louge was extensive and it was easy for all of to find a suitable wine while we were realxing after a lengthing excursion. A live jazz orchestra was playing in the lounge to complete the ambiance.

Views from the restaurant deck of Pudong and the Bund District were priceless. The rooms exquisitely lavish, spacious, and characteristic of the period with subtle embellishments of contemporary necessities that we North Americans are accustomed to.

The renovated Peace Hotel surpassed all our expectations, and is the best hotel i have stayed at in Shanghai, surpassing the Grand Hyatt Pudong, the Four Seasons, and the Portman Ritz Carlton. The Peace is the only one of the city's grand old hotels which has survived and been renovated to a 5-star standard. On top of that, it has always had the best location, sitting right on the Bund at Nanjing Road. There is nothing like the location (the new Peninsula is brand new and sterile, and faces the wrong direction on the Bund; the Waldorf has a fabulous entrance, but the main tower is a sterile modern building; and the Hyatt on the Bund is a generic tower that is over the Da Ming Road bridge). The Peace was a fabulous place to stay in 1992, when i first stayed there, although government run then. The fantastic renovation by the current owners and Fairmont misses no details, with immaculate finishes, the preservation of the key art deco details including the old Jazz Bar, and modern technology. The spa and gym are fabulous, and the pool, which is brand new, has a full length syklight spanning its 20m. Service was excellent while we were there. I needed a local phone, and instead of telling me where to buy it, the Concierge on duty Steve Zhang, lent me his second phone for my four day stay, which had excess unused minutes from a previous guest. We brought our two children, 6 and 7, and they were made to feel welcome the entire stay, at the pool and in the restaurants. In fact, my only minor complaint were the restaurants - the Cathay Room breakfast had limited buffet selections, and the Phoenix and Dragon restaurant service was slow (but the view is unmatched, and it is a beautiful room that preserves the essence of the original). No hotel in China can match the Peace. You feel like you are staying in a completely modernized grand hotel on the canal in Venice. Why would you stay in one of the modern behemoths when you can stay in the Peace?

Room Tip: Try to get a room on Nanjing Road or the Bund.
