“Fantastic Hotel”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

This is an unbelievably beautiful hotel with great service. The rooms have just been renovated and are gorgeous. Bathrooms are huge and luxurious. The jazz lounge is a great place to get a drink and hear old classics. It's a great location on the Bund. If you're looking for a great hotel in Shanghai, this is it! I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

I loved the hotel. I’d visited it back when it was state run and have come back after a long time.

The positive reviewers have said all there is to it.

Positives: Well covered elsewhere. But I must repeat, the standard room is still one of the nicest I’ve seen. The bathroom itself is worth it.

I’d like to point out some negatives:

1. Like most hotels in northern China, during winter the air conditioning is switched off and the rooms a balmy 28 degrees Celsius. That’s too hot and even if you set the thermostat to cool, it usually doesn't work. Fortunately the windows open on to an inner courtyard and the room wasn't uncomfortable.

However this is unacceptable from the Fairmont.

2. During check out I was nearly billed for breakfast although it was included. Fortunately I noticed before signing the bill and got it corrected. But again, hints of training lapses.

Otherwise, huge fascinating old pile and well worth it.

Perhaps the finest art deco building in all the city...take in the jazz bar, where big band music is played. There is also a history museum upstairs which should not be missed...when we went up to it, we were the ONLY ONES there!!

Increadible location. Beautiful lobby, restaurants & lounges. Perfect service and maybe the nicest rooms I've ever stayed in and this wasn't my first rodeo! The restoration on this hotel was very well done. The Peace Hotel lacks nothing. Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Stay in a river side room.

Initially an ordinary looking building from the outside but as soon as you step inside you know its something special. Just oozes with unique old world charm and opulence with impressive use of various marble in huge reception and entertaining areas. Just fully renovated to original but current high standards in everyway. We were fortunate to have one of the larger (huge) suites with entry foyer containing a coffee machine. From there a fabulous large bathroom was on the right (art deco & marble) has twin basins, large claw foot bath with T.V to watch. The very big shower cubicle has hand held and overhead shower rose , bench seat and non slip marble floor with nice bathrobes supplied, and an adjoining cubicle has a toilet. A dressing room divides this from a large bedroom which has a huge double bed, cupboard with flatscreen T.V and writing desk. Our friends had a smaller suite but it still had similar facilities.
Located opposite the Bund, hop on hop off bus and under river tram tunnel ride was an added bonus. The dining/breakfast room in traditional chinese decor overlooks the Bund, River and Pearl Tower. Staff were very attentive and a huge selection was available for breakfast.
Dont miss a coffee and cake in the downstairs cafe after a busy day shopping.
I have stayed in 5 star hotels before but nothing like this which is an experience not to be missed.
We were there for 2 days prior to a cruise and will stay longer next time.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the larger rooms with window to the center courtyard not street, which are very quiet...

This location is by far the best in Shanghai. You can walk to practically everything. The hotel has been renovated. We got in late and were up early the next morning to start our tour and then get to our cruise ship for 2 more nights in Shanghai. We stayed in an interior room for that reason, but it was lovely.....spacious, huge room and bathroom....large double sinks, great shower, comfty beds. Just a great place to stay. Wish we could have spent more time there.

Room Tip: As I said, we stayed in an inside room. I am sure the other rooms are spectacular.

The hotel has been renovated to a very high standard, maintaining its art deco origins and adding pieces along the way. We stayed in the Club rooms which were beautifully furnished, wonderful bathroom with great products too. The claw foot bath was superb! Having breakfast served by a waiter in tails in the club lounge made you feel very pampered. The CinCin bar also offered a cigar lounge, whilst the Jazz Bar offered modern jazz in the later hours of the evening. The Cathay restaurant had great food, well presented with knowledgable wait staff ensuring the best selection. We overlooked the Bund at dinner and saw the brightly lit boats going up and down and the skyline was fantastic with the lights on the buildings. Overall we had one of our better stays within the hotel and would highly recommend a visit!

Room Tip: Club rooms are worth every penny!
