I stayed at the Fairmont Peace Hotel for 3 days during an executive management meeting. The hotel is a classic old hotel refurbished to its natural charm. Right across the road from the Bund, there is plenty to see at street level if you take a walk. The rooms are decent in size and the bed is amazingly comfortable, too bad I had to get up early each day. The Dragon Phoenix serves typical Chinese cuisine, nothing really great to remember although that may have been through choices....the Peking Duck looked good however I did not order. A trp to the French quarter is also a good idea.

We were in Shanghai and its outskirts, in part, to attend a conference. At the tail end of our trip we decided to stay 1 night at the PEACE hotel for our anniversary. The hotel staff was amazing and they had an incredibly delicious cheese cake and fruit assortment waiting for us upon our arrival. The room was classy in every way…very high end and the bathroom was big enough for a party! The rugs and restored accessories in the hotel were stunning; worth the visit just for those. I would definitely return in a heart beat.

One note of caution about the dining: in the US we are so accustomed to free re-fills of ice-tea. For lunch I ordered 3 ice-teas, which came to about $30 US dollars; live and learn. For our special anniversary dinner we dined at their Chinese restaurant, ‘Dragon Phoenix’. My husband looked dashing in his raw silk sport jacket and I got all dolled up, only to be surrounded by two tables of families with poorly behaved kids and their parents wearing tea shirts and flip-flops; not the elegant dining I was expecting. The lighting was harsh and the service was awkward. The food was not memorable. However, after dinner we went to the Jazz bar and found the BEST music; the talented jazz musicians from all around the globe (San Diego, Singapore to Australia) were awesome.

Room Tip: Go for an upgrade as it's worth it!

I did not stay at the Fairmont peace hotel, but I went there for a drink on Sunday afternoon, and we sat on the rooftop terrace. Beautiful view and top location on the bund, on you are close to the green roof which is emblatic of the hotel. So far, great. But the terrace is covered with an ugly plastic green lawn ... no nice chairs or sofas (as the other Bund terrace you can see in near by buildings), but cheap chairs and table. Drinks were over priced for what you get (50 RMB a heineken beer, the waiter brought us the beer tin without glass, 50 RMB for a orange juice served in an Heineken plastic glass - I forgot to mention that Heineken seems to be sponsor of the terrace ... ). Very disappointing and very bad image for such an hotel, with such potential for this big rooftop - maybe the terrace is not under the Fiarmont management ?

Dear guest,

Regards from Fairmont Peace hotel, I truly hope this mail/reply finds you well and in good health.
First and on behalf of the F&B department I want to personally thank you for taking the time and giving us your honest feedback about our roof top terrace. It’s the honest and continuous feedback that makes us strive for success.
The roof top terrace was open first week of June and was fully sponsored by Heineken for the European football championship. The whole idea was to make it a very relaxed, casual, easy environment where guests can sit down, enjoy the view and service.
Due to the roof top nature and due to its historical value, we were bounded by some rules and regulations such as not using china, glass, silverware for safety reasons.
Roof top will stop operating around September and Fairmont is looking at further investment on the roof top for years to come.
Again, I want to thank you for your kind feedback and looking forward to meeting you in person

Kind regards,
Kammal Naamani

Hotel is amazing - especially the service. We booked a Gold room which is really worth the extra money for access to the lounge, free internet and other goodies. The bed in the room is probably the most comfortable I have ever slept in in a hotel. The rooms and the hotel are beautiful and you can't beat the location. If you are staying here a Saturday or Sunday, make sure you check out the rooftop terrace for a great view of the Bund. I would definitely come back here!

You can't beat the location - right on The Bund. The hotel is an old building but has been updated to 2012 standards. There is a set of elevators to the guest rooms and a separate set of elevators down the hall toward the Bund for the restaurants.

Upon entering the room, there was a hallway with the bathroom off to the left and the closet to the right. At the end of the hall was the bedroom. Our room was very large with a king bed which was soft, but firm. Room also included a large desk with wi-fi connections, and sitting area, large screen TV. Large closet with in room safe and ironing board. There was an espresso bar and a well stocked refrigerator. The large bathroom had a separate water closet, bath tub with claw feet, two sinks and a shower. Lighting in the bathroom was excellent. Rooms have very high ceilings, about 12 feet.

We had dinner one night in the Cathay Restaurant. Food was good, but portions are small. There is a great view of the Bund and river if you go out on the terrace.

A buffet breakfast was served in the Dragon Phoenix Restaurant. Cost was 240 CNY + service of 15%. Food choices included Western and Chinese selections.

A Bank of China ATM is located outside the hotel and a very short distance to the left.

The Jazz Band are an institution in Shanghai and are well worth a visit if you enjoy a relaxed and civilised environment. The Band are really good and play universally recognised tunes that most people will know. There is no cover charge as such but sometimes there is a minimum charge per person on busier nights. Good selection of cocktails and better value bottles of wine are available. Lots of tourists visit with cameras at the ready but also populare with local business types.
This may sound a bit weird - but this is the best smelling hotel I have been in - it's just divine! Great architecture is also an attraction here.

My husband and I typically try to stay in more modestly priced hotels but we decided to splurge and we were glad we did. This hotel is right on the bund, overlooking the Shanghai skyline (smog permitting). Just a short walk to tons of shopping. The service was excellent and the room and bathroom were really spacious and stylish. The bathroom was beautiful, with double sinks and a television over the tub. If you feel like splurging, this hotel is worth it.
