If you want to be pampered or if this is your first visit to Shanghai, and you're a bit nervous or intimidated, step into the cocoon that the Fairmont Peace Hotel offers. Friendly and efficient staff will welcome you upon check-in and escort you to your room. Tips are not necessarily expected (as they are in the U.S.) but are greatly appreciated.
Rooms are beautiful (ask for one with a claw-footed soaking tub...soooo luxurious), beds comfy, linens deluxe (silk stuffed quilts?), espresso machine with pods provided in room, requests for service answered promptly. Packages and messages brought to our room promptly also, which was nice. Tip: you get free internet service in your room if you join give the front desk folks your business card upon check-in.
Concierge (Ben) was over-the-top helpful: not only writing a restaurant address in Chinese for our cab driver, but also wrote recommended items from the menu in Chinese for us to give to the waitstaff. He can also tell you how to walk the 6 blocks from the Fairmont to Yang's Dumplings (that opens at 6:30am) so you can get your dumpling fix on early in the day.
Hotel at excellent location. The bund is just a quarter of a block away and across the street. Take a stroll on the bund in the early morning and in the evening to see all the happenings and view across the river. Don't forget to look behind you at the view of the strip on your side of the river...I enjoyed that more than the Las Vegas-style view of the other side. A few blocks down the way (near the Waldof Astoria) there are a few delightful little shops: one selling hand-made slippers and one selling tea with a large assortment.
I highly recommend the Saturday Tea Dance. I'm sorry I missed attending but did get to enjoy watching the band and dancers from afar. Truly elegant. I don't know where else you would be able to enjoy something like this so put on your best duds and join in on the fun!
The Jazz Club was nice, as was the Dragon Phoenix and the French Café, wwhere you can get an amazing latte or hot chocolate.
Highly, highly recommend this hotel.
