An old but very elegant hotel, our room was very large with equally large bath. Working fireplace in the room and a really nice, large terrace that opened from large doors in our room. Impressive dining room with equally impressive, extensive breakfast buffet each morning, with table after table of offerings to satisfy the American, Asian, or any other international traveler.

Enjoyed our stay here. Such a great location, so close to the Bund. Staff were really friendly here. Room was good with tea/coffee making facilities. Really comfortable bed. Booked room with breakfast which was fine a choice of Western/Chinese food. Overall a really enjoyable stay, would recommend.

I went to Shanghai with 3 other friends and after roughing it a bit---we had stayed in as another reviewer put it, I suppose more "authentic" places in China. This hotel welcomed us with open arms. It is super close to the Bund and not too far away from anything in the city walking wise or by taxi. The rooms are fantastic! The beds are large, the ceilings are very high and the architecture just reminds you of old Shanghai and you can imagine all the influential people who stayed there. Major plus: The concierge was very helpful and kind and it's priced very, very well. I suppose because it's not a Western chain with all the bells and whistles and glossy finish, but I didn't really miss that. I'm happy to have stayed there.

Stayed here for 4 nights in June 2012. The hotel's history and unique interior makes it quite different from many other "mainstream" shanghainese hotels, and I loved the hotel's old character and atmosphere. Our room was huge, with big beds, some kind of balcony and a spacious clean bathroom. The breakfast was also good, but a bit pricy if it's not included. The location is great, just across Waibaidu bridge from the Bund, but you need to walk a bit to the nearest metro station in Nanjing Road. The lobby staff speaks decent english and can help you with taxi, train tickets etc. Overall we had a great stay here and Astor House gives you very good value for the money!

Stayed here in November 2007 for several nights. Rooms are comfortable and had wooden floors which really added to the old charm of this hotel. Beds and the bathroom were comfortable and clean. People were friendly enough and the food was fine as well, although there are better options in the streets leading away behind the hotel (so not towards the Bund, just minutes away across the beautiful bridge). The outside of the hotel is also fantastic and is a big contrast with some of the newer buildings behind it. Fantastic atmosphere and great price, would definately choose again.

This was our last hotel on our trip to China, and it was kind of a relief after weeks of more "authentic" places. This place was lots of character while still being a modern western style hotel. The fact that Einstein and Russell stayed here just adds to the appeal. The service was excellent and the room was large and clean. We could hear the honking of car horns every morning, and I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out how to adjust the temperature of the shower, so I took baths. But the fact that this place had a separate bath was a luxury compared to the other hotels we stayed in in China. Here's a tip: take taxis in Shanghai. There's no point getting hot and sweaty in summer walking to the subway, or walking to your location when taxis are so cheap and (unlike so many cities) trustworthy. We drove all around Shanghai and never paid more than the equivalent of 5 dollars (other than to the airport). The bellboys will be happy to hail a cab for you and tell the driver (in Chinese) where to go.

The celebrity room which was huge with lots of old world character, but the tv and computer were also very old school, and the bathroom was average. Service was mostly good, but breakfasts were cold and uninspiringly the same every morning.
